@sapientia_et_virtus2 жыл бұрын
I love how it's so popular to hate on Seinfeld now. Comedy has epochs that ebb and flow, that evolve over time and seem absolutely bizarre to people in the future. If one tries watching some old shows like The Carol Burnett Show, The Three Stooges, etc., they'll understand. Seinfeld (the show) may seem cliché to younger people now, but it was revolutionary at its time, creating an entire genre of TV. One should always show respect to past comedians and artists, even if they don't understand it. These legends paved the way for the comedy we enjoy today. And remember, all of the shows you think are cutting edge now, the ones taking risks and breaking barriers-well, they will all be cliché, irrelevant, and misunderstood in the future, as well. So have some perspective. Have some respect and instead of following the crowd, maybe try to understand what makes them funny to people. Who knows? You might become a Monty Python fan. You might expand your horizons.

@Michael-rk9iw Жыл бұрын
@@sapientia_et_virtus Its this kind of one dimensional thinking that makes people love a show like Seinfeld. You don't even know what generation I come from. Its a dumb statement. And though I don't come from any of those older generations for the shows you mention here, I can still laugh with them. Seinfeld on the other hand comprises a cast of narcissistic, smug, petty people that frankly deserved what they got in the end.
@sapientia_et_virtus Жыл бұрын
@@Michael-rk9iw Come on, bro. You know that I could easily ascertain that you weren't from the generation I was speaking to because of your statement about watching it in the 90s. I was clearly speaking to the generation born afterwards. Also, the neurotic and strange behavior of the show IS part of the joke. The fact that you personally don't find it funny is fine, but you don't have to go around bashing it. I don't really find The Three Stooges very funny, but I can respect those who do, the effect that it had, and its significance in the history of comedy. It's obviously just the popular thing to do now, to attribute all of Seinfeld's brilliance to Larry David and call Jerry a hack. It's just people parroting a meme of something they read to appear intellectually superior and act as comedy gatekeepers. That behavior is exactly what you seem to deride-narcissistic, smug, petty, and shall I add pretentious?
@JET7C0 Жыл бұрын
@@Michael-rk9iw My god - that was the entire point of what made Seinfeld a massive hit: sitcoms before then were filled with a bunch of cliched, perfect, or "model family" type setups, often containing heartfelt or "special" melodramatic episodes out of nowhere for ratings. People were so tired of seeing that kind of perfection, or cliche, and lack of reality, that Seinfeld was a massive breath of fresh air at the time. There was also a kind of honesty to it, in that most people have done at least some petty things in their lives, because even if they don't get to the level of the characters on the show - most people are imperfect, even if they won't admit it out loud (or more importantly, to themselves). A lot of the plots on Seinfeld could (or literally did) happen in real life, so it was also believable, vs. the idealized or sanitized elements of other TV at the time. Also, you're acting like them getting what they deserved for being such petty, vain, or selfish people was some kind of justice that was dished out external to the show, when _the show itself made that the entire plot of the finale,_ so basically was pointing that fact out in red, flashing letters.

To add in to the conversation here, I find Seinfeld the show to easily be the greatest comedy sitcom in history, and almost the greatest show in history, period. The only show I would rank above it would be the Twilight Zone. Obviously this is just my personal opinion. Jerry Seinfeld the Standup Comedian I think is hit or miss. I think the tone of his voice is what makes his clean comedy funny. I legitimately laughed my ass off when I saw him live in Florida maybe ten years ago. That's the only time I've seen him. Jerry isn’t successful because he’s funny. He’s not particularly funny. He’s successful because he’s a VEEEEEEERY safe choice. He pushes zero envelopes.
@blakeedmondson95734 жыл бұрын
Why do you have to "push envelopes" to be funny? People don't go to, listen to, or watch comedy to hear about politics and Seinfeld knows that. If you think I'm wrong, look at the late night TV ratings since Colbert, Fallon, Conan, Kimmel, and Myers went 90% political. Very very few people watch late night television anymore. Which is why everyone wishes Seinfeld would do late night. He'd take over the television world. No matter what your political views are, why would we turn on a comedy show to be reminded of the shape the country is in? If that's what we wanted, we'd watch the news. Seinfeld realizes his job is to make people laugh and not to push political ideology. That's why he's the greatest of all time. By the way, the 2nd highest earning comedian of 2019, Jim Gaffigan rarely talks about politics

It's baffling how a complete hack can be this successful
@phillipbarlow93874 жыл бұрын
One thing we know for sure, though: he's WAY more successful that either you or me. The people have spoken, I guess. The fact that Americans think he's hilarious, has made him a legit billionaire. Saying he's a hack, is like saying the Beatles, Taylor Swift, and Warren Buffet are hacks. You can say it, but then again...come on, man. Right? In the USA, we have Capitalism. That means we value things with what? Capital. Dollars. Which makes the Beatles, Michael Jackson, and Jerry Seinfeld the Kings of Show Business. You can always argue taste, so maybe he's not your taste. But you really can't argue with Taylor Swift's concert ticket sales, or Jerry's success in comedy. You can't argue dollars and cents -- that's like arguing that you wouldn't trade bank accounts with Jerry...which both you and I would, in a heartbeat!

@@phillipbarlow9387 Marketability, image, and budget dictate success more so than actual talent and skill in various fields. Just like with movies and games, sometimes it’s consensus that others are better but the amount of support is so great for others that ultimately it leads to more success despite weaker critical and consumer acclaim. I’ve seen artist or movies that sell the most get terrible audience and critic scores while ones that aren’t nearly as successful have much better scores with a large sample size. Context is key in these scenarios.

@@phillipbarlow9387 We had Capitalism til a bunch of snowflakes aged 30 and younger fell in love with Bernie Sanders and now we got Biden as President. Capitalism hanging on by a thread unfortunately.

Meeeh... I mean this is more like reverse heckling, if nothing else I think a lot less about Jerry now, if he thinks that his experience makes him an expert on what others find funny, then he needs a serious attitude adjustment Bye Jerry!

So is this guy supposed to be funny? Do they bribe these people to laugh?
@TheSandcleric10 ай бұрын
And two years later, I STILL don’t think he’s THAT funny. Humor is subjective, and I never said I haven’t chuckled at a single thing JS has said. But in his show, his supporting cast was funnier than he was. I’m sure you don’t agree, but hey, this is all subjective.

I agree. That is observational humor for dumb Americans. You don't think about surrounding and things, but when someone mentions obvious things that is funny for them.

Please will someone help me understand how this man is funny. Kramar and George were the only funny ones on his show.

He says things that most people are already thinking but with a much better delivery than those same people would be able to do. Its basically everyone's existential crisis on a stage

i think that the lines, jokes or moves that he makes are like those you would see in a movie, like they are extremely false, you get me?
