I’m a 64 yo man, probably not Taylor’s main demographic, needed to fill an hour before going to bed so I hit the stand up section on Netflix and as I was scrolling a clip for “Have it All” came on and I cracked up so I watched it. Since then I have seen all of her specials, even told my sister about Taylor. To have so much talent at such a young age, I can only imagine the hard work and repetition it took to get there and it makes it all the more impressive. Super funny person!

Another aspect I noticed about Taylor's specials is that each stage blends very well not only with her jackets, but also with the respective themes. The lights on "Quarter-Life Crisis" have a nice balance between the background's dark tone and the very bright lamp following Taylor, so they sell the idea of the special being an "introduction" to her body of work; on "Look at You", the stage is even emptier and darker, only lit up by a series of small lamps, which was likely intended as a symbol of vulnerability and candidness; on "Have It All", the stage is much more brighter and colorful, so it lets you know that Taylor is taking a sort of a "victory lap", even if she's still figuring out a lot of things about her life. I think this shows how the work of everyone behind the curtains, whether it's in a movie, a play, a special or something else, can help you get your jokes and messages across even more effectively!

It's interesting how much I love Taylor's work, considering my demographic and personal experiences are so far removed from hers. I have loving supportive parents- both still alive. I'm a generation older (though of course lived through my 20s as well- 20+ years ago). I'm a straight man, not a bi woman. She talks a lot in this interview about all the people who have come to her telling her how much they relate to her jokes and stories: "That's just like me! I thought I was the only one!" which clearly she did too, until those people opened up to her- after she opened up to them. Sharing one's shared experiences- knowing that you're not alone: that can be a very powerful consequence of good comedy! But the way she crafts her jokes, makes even me- someone who does not personally relate- relate to her situation. And that is another powerful consequence of good comedy: opening up your audience to empathy. I consider myself a fairly empathetic person already; I try to be, at any rate. And comedy can be a great way to share yourself, because it's disarming. Black people can tell jokes that allow their fellow black people to say, "yes, that's true!" and also allow white people to say, "Is that true, I had no idea that was your experience" in a safe atmosphere. Gay people can tell their stories: other gay people will agree, and straight people will be informed. Women can talk about their dating experiences, or their traumas, and other women can say "Me too; I've been there" and straight men can say, "Is that what it's like? I've never thought about it that way, before!" Someone with Bipolar Disorder can talk about "arm floaties," and other bipolar people can use that metaphor in their own lives, therapists can use it with their patients, people without bipolar- those folks floating on their own back- can understand that while they can float maybe some others need floaties, and that's okay, too. Comedy can be a powerful, powerful tool for communication! Beyond "just" making us laugh- which is also tremendously good for our mental and physical health, just all on its own- the power of comedy to bring like people together, and also bring non-like people together: that's so awesome. I don't know if Taylor quite knows how much her comedy has shaped some people. Maybe she does; I hope she does (without getting self-conscious about it) understand how her voice is a powerful one. Keep on keepin' on, Taylor!!
