Great video. I just fixed the same router. The same capacitor had failed. As someone stated already, it's great to see people fixing things. Thanks.

Check the ac adapter too. If its caps fail, the large ripple it sends out will destroy the input filter caps in the router quickly. Also, be sure to use low esr type caps for switching mode requlators. With high frequency ripple current, lower esr is a must, else they self-heat and dry up quicker.

Nice video great to see people fixing things instead of just chucking them. I have a Netgear WPN824 v2 doing the same thing. I'd be interested in seeing some videos of how you "read" the oscilloscope. Thanks alot!

Glad I found this video. Thanks for posting it. I had the same issue... Replaced the Capxon 470uf, 6.3v capacitor with a NCC KZE 470uf, 10v, low ESR one. The removed Capxon cap gave a reading of 630uf with an ESR reading of 1.2-1.5Ω (the data sheet for the "GF" series notes a max impedance of .095Ω@20C). One bad cap. I also did a voltage reading on the power adapter. It had an output of 16.6v DC, which doesn't seem to help anything.

@epicenterprises1 The 220uF probably needs to be kept the same as it looks like it was part of the switchmode 12v -> 3.3v regulator on the board. The 470uF was just for power smoothing so the capacitance was not too critical. For power smoothing more capacitance won't hurt although you should check to make sure that you can still put it back together if you use a bigger capacitor.

The same capacitor had failed. I put it on C114 is that wrong??? Becouse working fine, no noise anymore...

My linksys BEFSR41v2 router kicked the bucket and I cracked it open and one of the caps is bulged. Upon opening the top the paper inside is dry and peels easily. I'm going to check the junk parts bag for a donor.

Make sure you always use high grade, Low ESR capacitors in these things. If you use cheap and\or general purpose capacitors, it will just fail again quickly.

Mine just started making the high pitched noise about a month ago, I just ordered some 1000uf, 470uf and 220uf caps for a monitor power supply by coincidence ... lets see if i can up my order from digikey before it gets here..., Why are 470 and 220 so common with 12v filtering? and can i generally always upgrade the 470's to 1000uf's?

Does it have both the 5 gigahertz and 2.4 gigahertz connection points?

If it wasn't for this video I would have bought a new router instead of repairing it. So thank you for uploading this video! :D

My router gives out no wifi and it makes a high pitch noise. Help plz
@epicenterprises113 жыл бұрын
Well i replaced both caps, and added a slim 40mm fan over the broadcom cpu on some ruber spacers and soldered it to the 12v input. No more high pitched noise, just the whir of the slim fan :) The cap i used for the 470uF was 2x to big, but i just installed it horizontal to the board with long leads (normally lead distance can screw up capacitors, but because this is just for filtering i figured i could get away with long leads. The Wire holes on this board were tiny :( took forever.

I beliefe my router has the same issue. The ping to the router gets some times very high.

Great video. Its good to see someone sharing their knowledge on repairing stuff! I have the same router which was making the same squealing noise you describe. I couldn't access the router settings so i tried resetting the unit and then the wireless died completely. Do you think replacing the capacitors will fix this? Regards Elliot

That explains what's wrong with mine :/ To bad I can't fix it myself.

This is a good point, junk box capacitors are probably still better than the garbage it shipped with though heh.

THe Capxon brand is a POS. I've foudn their caps in tons of dead computer power supplies and on computer mobo's. Most of the time almost all of them are burst.
