In the third place match at the 2014 World Cup, the Netherlands defeated Brazil 3-0. The hosts continued their miserable performance, where in the second minute Thiago Silva committed a foul on Arjen Robben in the penalty area and received only a yellow card. Robin van Persie converted the penalty and scored the goal. Brazil continued to play uncoordinated and barren, and the Netherlands comfortably defended their two-goal lead with David Luiz scoring in their own net and Dali Blind scoring a second. Georginio Wijnaldum scored the third goal in extra time, allowing the Netherlands to win with a convincing scoreline. After the match, Dutch coach Louis van Gaal took over as coach of Manchester United, but the future of Brazil's Luiz Felipe Scolari was less certain.
