Oh my gosh, these aliens are the embodiment of, "Drive me closer so I can hit them with my sword." Meanwhile the humans almost feel bad that the enemy can't fight back at this range, almost.

i love it when humans are portrayed as basically biomechanical targeting computers like a whole race of deadshots or hawkeyes or who ever you want to pick as your favorite fictional sharp shooter with real life aimbot.
@Modhunter42
@Modhunter42 Жыл бұрын
The military would Absolutely have aimbots in those Gauss rifles, if not smart bullets; and train all soldiers in at least it's Basic use. But in a war against enemies that only have 10-20% of your visual range? ALL the troops you sent Would be trained for that option, as well as the specialized snipers. The enemies, & allies, can see (vey) through walls? You want them at Range even more.

@@Modhunter42 oh yeah and by that point cybernetics would probably be pretty common even for every day people so military sharp shooters would have all of the stuff you stated plus like a direct neural connection to their weapons optics or crazy cyborg eyes that are far more advanced than organic ones.

@@r.connor9280 I mean by this hypothetical fictitious point in our history cybernetics wouldn't even be that much money with the kind of tech we would have. plus when all that stuff is built into you its less shit to carry its probbably also easier to fix a cybernetic limb or organ in the field than it is to fix an organic part that would need to be grown in a vat to replace the old organic part when wounded. so like if your eye is damaged you just pop in a new bionic eye instead of being blind and out of action till you can get surgery or a new eye grown for you.

The story kind of forgets about thermal sights. Without those, humans would lose badly at nighttime. kind of makes you wonder, why the aliens failed to develop tech to compensate for their lack of depth perception. the humans seems to understand what they miss, the aliens don't.

A common misconception of thermal, IR, and UV low light systems. Thermal systems actually pick up the emitted thermal radiation of a body. While IR is in the same spectrum as that radiation it is less sensitive and only picks up the reflected emissions, either natural or from an emitter. The difference between IR and UV systems is that in addition to IR sensitivity they have UV sensitivity as well. They tend to have green displays because it allows for UV light to be "displayed", while IR systems tend to have that washed out monochrome look. The core difference is that the latter two will not work in a completely blacked out environment unless there is an emitter, while true thermal do not require an emitter.

As to the last comment...you can't really miss what you've never fully developed, _nor_ relied upon; *including* _a brain hard-wired to 'fill in the blanks.'_ (Something I suspect xenos would regard as bordering on mystical.)
@RexMK-
@RexMK- Жыл бұрын
@@ironwolfF1This implies that, the aliens in question evolve in an enviroment where the ability to percieve targets from far away is either not nescesary, or actively discourage by the enviroment itself. And givent that the alien soldier that acompanied the Humans has a sense to see trought thermal emissions. It might be a low light enviroment. Maybe a planet that orbits a start with less luminosity than the sun or is futher away from it's primary than Earth is. Also the alien mention his species evolve in a way were the ability to be aware of your immediate surrounding is more benecifiial than being able to se something that is very far away.

Humans did just fine in night time attacks long before the invention of alternative sight devices.

One of the reason why they might have never develop something for their lack of depth perception is because they live in an eviroment where that trait is either not nescesary OR the eviroment actively discourage the use if that trait. Like a planet covered in montains, deep forest and dense jungles. Or maybe a low light enviroment. This important to consider becasue it most likely means that their society and way of life all build around this enviroments. We humans have inviented things like sniper riffles because trowing things from very far away has been a staple of human development. The aliens cleary either never had the need for that or the enviroment makes that an impossibility. Also Vathisk (The alien) mentions artillery, so they species indeed uses weapons that enables them to fire of far away target, they just't have snipers, or long range infantry.

Did? DID? We keep evolving with each generation fool! We never stopped evolving! Its just we do it incrementally. Some adaptations don't work under all conditions, some are so small they are not there for all practical purposes, some are negative traits, (it happens) but it Deep time , it ads up. A few millennia more, and we will be a whole new species.
@satibel

I have a pending story on that. The different species of humans who evolved from the 100 or so people in generational ships that landed on various planets.
@noppornwongrassamee8941
@noppornwongrassamee8941 Жыл бұрын
And some of our adaptations are technological. Humans lack thermal vision? We already developed thermal goggles and thermal sights before we achieved space travel and I imagine in this interstellar future, they've only gotten lighter and more convenient to use since. So even under low light conditions where humans should be at a disadvantage, we'd still be able to see almost as well (if not better) than we could with just the Mk I eyeball, and probably better than the alien troops since we'd still retain depth perception and the ability to shoot them from a distance they can't reply at.

Ugh... These stories that try to make themselves "unique" by making up some new "word" for something are always so annoying to read or listen to. Given a similar sensory baseline, both cultures will develop identical concepts, or close to identical anyway. So in their language it can be called "blooplisrala", but it still means "sight" or "vision", so there's no point in making up words. After all, we're reading the story in English, we may as well use English words through out.
