When you remove the horror from war there's no reason to stop having wars. Demons make great peacekeepers.

Except that their concept of war is simply war games using drones and AI, no actual loss of life. That's much better than having actual wars.

I don't think our society will ever make it to post-scarcity but if we did, I'm not sure we will abandon our need for conflict and conquest. Yeah, demon seem a succinct enough analogy to the human condition in the context of peace and war.
@lukaskloiber424820 күн бұрын
There is phisically speaking no such thing as post scarcity. This is a term invented by communist scify writers that do not understand economics or human nature.

I realised how different human views are from alien views in this story when I was like " well surely they accept some loss of soldiers, like if a squad died I'm sure they won't stop it. " But then I realized they meant that it was weird for even 1 man to die in wars and I was like " ????? What do you mean you lost a few high ranking officers and suddenly you retreat the entire army ???? I thought you said war not a bar fight from wild west 1865! "

Okay. That kind of psychopath would not be tolerated in the modern military. We found out they don't make good soldiers back in Vietnam.

True, but the guy was half dead so probably high on everything the human body makes when its in danger/hurt and considering this was a suicide mission (i dont think they were sure about the ai not being able to target them). They probably picked the most insane soldiers they had.
@Mojo_3.144 ай бұрын
Yeah, not to mention things like the Geneva Convention. Skinning an enemy alive makes you a war criminal. Your own side would put you down like a mad dog if you don't surrender.

One thing I don't understand about these "civilized war" stories - if you're socially evolved enough not to want to endanger actual people even in war, why do you still have wars in the first place?

To settle disputes when diplomacy breaks down
@leechowning27124 ай бұрын
Geneva. Once you accept "wars are a natural part of diplomacy", you must add rules to keep people from being horrified. See Ukraine and Gaza, Sudan and Syria... once people see how horrific wars can be, and the nearing universal call for it to stop. You have to make war civilized, to make it accepted.
@KaiHenningsen4 ай бұрын
@@HimitsuYami Why does it break down to that degree? I mean, over here in the EU, if diplomacy can't solve a problem, we usually get some court to decide. We don't play war games.
@LoneWolfArtist4 ай бұрын
@@KaiHenningsen ... So you erased all wars leading you up to this point? Even WW1 and 2? Wars are about conquest and self defense from those that would conquer you. Not everyone is diplomatic

Why is almost every hfy stories about war and violence
@anark10n4 ай бұрын
Because violence has been conflated with cool for so long. And also, the people who write these stories are what's known as 'chickenhawks': they advocate for military force/intervention as a primary instrument of foreign/policy, while they themselves lack the will to participate in said force/intervention and, curcially, any combat experience.
@jakeand90203 ай бұрын
Several reasons: First, not really, there are definitely more stories involving humans just being "weird" by alien standards. Second, HFY, "Humans Fu*k Yeah!" Third, action, generally speaking, is a popular genre. Finally, umm, because Humans. Seriously, open a history book, if humans are involved, there will be wars and violence.
