You know the story is great, when you can see the complete movie made of it, while listening. Great Story and characters, it just feels like real people, with their own personality and way of thinking. The Robot is perfectly written with enough hints of "emotion" so we empethize with him, but still logical, cold and calculating enough that we don't forget that "he" is differnt. This is perhaps my favorite hfy story (series not included). Hope to see more from this particular author.

Foreshadow the invasion with passengers talking about some border dispute with some aliens, fear of invasion. They ask the robot for his opinion: "it matters not. I will still guard this maglev and its passengers." A character like the tall robot from star wars rouge one.

I've always envisioned that machine beings would have an old dialup modem screech as their war cry sound. The damaged construct clasps the neck of the enemy commander; raises faceplates to equal levels; then emits the most horrific dialup-screech as the core overheats. Given enough encounters; the ol' analog SYN - ACK screams would become trauma inducing to opposing forces.
@archon95132 жыл бұрын
Breaching or invading an outpost, power long faded from the walls; they trigger an emergency mag-bar release and the door falls slightly out of place. The heavy metal denting the frame with it's weight as it is freed. Just carefully displaced enough; not to fall atop any member of a scout team as it impacts the ground with a deafening clang. Uncovering their 'ears', the scout team steps into the facility. Not twenty yards from the entry way... blip. a dial tone, beep beep beep beep beep. ... ... blip. beeeeeeeeeeep. The minimum monitoring systems blip SYN. And wait. SYN-ACK is not sounded. Emergency lights start grudgingly flickering to life. Ancient war machines booting back to into service, whirring up. Unauthorized entry detected - SYN SYN SYN ... STN-ACK Not valid. Unauthorized entry detected. Securing site.

yup. @@nathanielbob1669 You’d expect a robot to have dictionary-perfect pronunciation of any word in its banks (my american english dictionary lists it with the anglicized “tuh-MAH-lee”/“tuh-MAH-leez”), and figure out others based on some simple algorithm, some of which would result in “tuh-mall” or “tuh-mallz”, but others, based on context or mimickry, would likely base it on the old lady who gave it to him’s pronunciation or a quick search or a larger connected dictionary. I find it far more likely that the narrator simply is unfamiliar with the word, as it is a word originating in the New World (The Aztec language of Nahuatl -> Mexican Spanish -> American English) and not commonly used outside of North and Central America.
