I still have a few remaining to find. One was an RTS game, 2D, and I remember having pumpkins and clockwork as resources. The other 2 were an RPG and its sequel. I remember style and the combat were like Zelda: A link to the Past. The demo of the second one was set in a monastery and I remember having to craft a potion using the bell of the tower as a cauldron.

I never got to play the game online, because the only internet connection we had back then was super expensive dial up, and by the time we got DSL no one played it any more. But boy did I like the campaigns, despite how short they may have been compared to other strategy games, and despite how difficult it was to actually complete them. One of the most unique and interesting RTS games, and one that I certainly will never forget.

It was absolutely brilliant game. I remember it after 20 years vividly: sounds, gameplay, atmosphere - this is the best indication on how good and impactful it was. Excellent tidbits of lore inside the game, novel gameplay, real variety in factions, amazing replayability. Classic case of "they don't do game like these anymore", current tower defense games are very basic and bland compared to this. 9.5/10. I'm also one of those who bought stratus on steam years ago, but so far - no news. They mentioned a sponsor in August on Facebook and that's it. Oh well. Back to nostalgia closet.

@Indigo_Gaming
@Indigo_Gaming 4 жыл бұрын
As I was making this, I imagined a team-based remake of the game, where you had "pilots" and a "commander". The commander would build structures and give objectives (like the 1997 RTS), and the pilots would take control of aerial units and turrets, which would make their aim more effective, but also would boost their damage potential. I'd love to play something like that, reminds me of that Command & Conquer spinoff back in the day.

The first one that goes through the wall always gets bloodied. Truly ahead of its time. I remember playing this with my friend online back in the late 90s. Somebody would get a house call and the game would get disconnected. He was always better at building bridges and won 90% of the time because of this. I found the game fascinating, even though I sucked at it. Would be great if somebody did a HD re release of this. Such a unique setting and design that one could easily do something big with it. I loved the way that nothing in this game was straightforward, everything required strategic thinking, even the building of bridges. I had no idea about the remakes. While I actually prefer the graphics of the original over the new 3d stuff, I'd welcome the chance to play more maps with this kind of gameplay in any shape or form.

I remember this game being one of first ones I downloaded off the internet. To have a demo that was able to connect to regular game sessions was amazing. To have internet functionality built into a demo was unheard of. It was always a premium feature. Game servers weren't cheap. They were hoping that people, witnessing stronger players, would be encouraged to buy the full version. Only trouble is that so many people downloaded the demo and nobody bought the full version, so you were pretty much guaranteed to get a lobby full of demo players, just like yourself. Equally capped, and equally weak, so it was fun. We played endlessly. It was fun, because it was different. Trying to outbridge eachother was like a real time chess game, where you could place pieces as fast as you could think. It was such a great experience. I have fond memories of this game.
@Indigo_Gaming
@Indigo_Gaming 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I allude to that in the video. The demo was so good that most people didn't buy the full game (or just cracked it). This was well before the Free to Play model was standard, so that really hurt the success of the game.
@enilenis
@enilenis 3 жыл бұрын
@@Indigo_Gaming I remember Gamespy service being used to circumvent game protections. If one had to have a legal key to play on official servers in games such as Battlefield 1942 and Soldier Of Fortune and Ghost Recon, through Gamespy if one connected to a cracked server with the key check disabled, then a pirated version of the copy would be as good as a full one. After Gamespy there were programs like Kamachi, that did the same sort of thing. Creating VLAN for internet sessions. But Netstorm suffered even without those things. Like you said, the demo was just too good. I remember going to a store, looking at a box, coming home to read about the game, finding out there was a free version, and never coming back to the store.

There was an indie game called "Stratus: Battle for the Sky" that I supported on Steam Early Access. When I interviewed one of the members of the dev team, he said that he got in contact with some of the original NetStorm devs and given access to un-used NetStorm concept art which they were able to use for Stratus. It was a true spiritual successor. But a lack of funding and public exposure led to what I assume the project's end. It hasn't been updated since 2019. At the time I played it, the Rain faction was working and you could play a multiplayer game, but public servers were empty and their was no AI enemy to play against offline.

Man oh man. Why would you name your new business, "Titanic _anything?"_ That's bold. It never pays off :P I've never heard of this one, but am totally intrigued by all this (definitely wishlisting Stratus on Steam now too). Every once in awhile I recall old online services and lament the fact that, just so many games are lost forever now. You'll page through an old magazine or look up an old demo disc, see an ad or watch a trailer for a game like Sega Soft's Rocket Jockey, 10Six or Net Fighter and be like, "Oh yeah! That thing that was exclusive to Heat.ne---- Ohhhhh..." Same thing with a lot of these late 90's Services. R.I.P. GameStorm and Aliens Online :'( Good job doing your part to archive some kind of memory of this. The mechanics, the world design, just everything here sounds pretty awesome - I was totally getting a tower defense/RTS hybrid vibe from you talking about them so I was happy to hear I was on the right track when you said it's almost like the progenitor of that type of game. I wish I got to play it back in the day.

I love videos like this, where we get to see some of these forgotten gems. This game sadly came out a couple of years before I started gaming for real. Would so have tried playing it during its heyday. I think it would have done better as a single player game (at most a multiplayer game) than as an online game, though. If I remember correctly, my dear family, who love strategy just as much as me, did prefer games like Age of Empires instead, or more city-building games like The Settlers. Oh, boy, all those Settlers games... Me, I fell for Heroes of Might and Magic instead (I still say 1 to 3 is the best ones).

I think it would fare better today now that the internet is so much bigger. The only gripe I have with the game is that some matches, both solo and multiplayer, could go on forever. I think you could even get yourself stuck in the solo campaign if you made too many mistakes building.

As a Dane I am even more excited because of Julians involvement too. He is simply one of the most inventive game-designers ever - and I did not even know at the time in the mid-90's that he was from the same country as me :-) (U can almost tell I love Daggerfall :-))

The strategy and mindwork in this game is way ahead of its time. Even today you'll barely see games that can match the concept of this game. It was like chess but rts. I still remember my earlier matches. there was one time i was owning like crazy then out of the blue the opponent kidnapped my priest with a golem+decimation and overturned it. The strategy in this game is top notch.

Played this online a lot in my early teens on my old dial up connection. The online community was really cool in those days.

I remember playing this game back in the day on the single player campaign. It was really something of its kind. I found the game at the Dollar Tree. Of course by then the multiplayer was shut down.

:D So good. I remember my brother running across the block to tell me the CDS finally came. We sprinted back home and dove straight into it! :D I feel like you should have kept the last part of the altar sacrifice in there!

@@Indigo_Gaming I'm glad you're documenting this on KZbin because most people have never heard of this title, and whenever I bring it up there's nowhere for people to see the game in action. I feel that this video can now be the definitive resource for it.

Hah, I'd completely forgotten about this one. Think I had a badly cracked version, or maybe a demo from a magazine? The sounds are so instantly nostalgic to me though, thanks for this vid!

I like these stories and I am unfamiliar with this title. Dune 2 was my favourite RTS game knowing that only previous RTS experience I got was a very old Power Monger (made by Bullfrog/Peter Molyneux if I am not mistaken).

Interesting... this video appeared on my feed a few days after I was led to remember this exact game... I probably have a copy of it somewhere in a box. If I recall I got it free in a magazine (because back then, magazines where a thing and they sometimes had free games in the package).
