LYRICS
Slow down,
we've got time left to be lazy
All the kids have bloomed from babies into flowers in our eyes.
We've got 50 good years left to spend out in the garden
I don't care to beg your pardon,
We should live until we die.
We were barely 18 when we'd crossed collective hearts.
It was cold, but it got warm when you'd barely crossed my eye.
and then you turned, put out your hand,
and you asked me to dance.
I knew nothing of romance, but it was love at second sight.
I swear when I grow up, I won't just buy you a rose.
I will buy the flower shop, and you will never be lonely.
Even if the sun stops waking up over the fields
I will not leave, I will not leave 'til it's our time.
So just take my hand, you know that I will never leave your side.
It was the winter of '86, and all the fields had frozen over.
So we moved to Arizona to save our only son
and now he's turning to a man, although he thinks just like his mother,
he believes we're all just lovers he sees hope in everyone.
And even though she moved away,
we always get calls from our daughter.
She has eyes just like her father's
they are blue when skies are grey.
And just like him, she never stops,
Never takes the day for granted,
works for everything that's handed to her,
Never once complains.
You think that I nearly lost you
When the doctors tried to take you away.
But like the night you took my hand beside the fire
30 years ago to this day
You swore you'd be here 'til we decide that it's our time
Well it's not time, you've never quit in all your life.
So just take my hand, you know that I'll never leave your side.
You're the love of my life, you know that I'll never leave your side.
You come home from work and you kiss me on the eye
You curse the dogs and say that I should never feed them what is ours
So we move out to the garden, look at everything we've grown
and the kids are coming home
I'll set the table
You can make the fire.

+ IT's JayCFG // Crossfire Gamer No, he got it right. See "I won't just... (but) I will... ">> " when I grow up, I won't just buy you a rose. I will buy the flower shop, and you will never be lonely." It's like the conditional sentence (unreal condition - future). And then the If-clause following after that.

my parents were a couple since high school and ever since i heard this song, i think of them and now it's hard for me to listen to this song. it just makes me really sad. my dad died due to an accident, it all happened in a flash and it has been a month now. it's really sad thinking about that i will never get to hug him, kiss him, hold his hand, hearing his voice and he would never get to see me growing up. to those people who still have parents, love them, don't forget to hug and kiss them and tell them you love them

I sometimes think about how far Nate has come since the format and aim and ignite and some nights all the way to grand romantic and how jack has come from steel train to strange desire and Andrews acting career taking off and watching some of their old drunken younow live streams and it catches me up because of how beautiful this group is and how they need to be together and make music and need so much more popularity, this is poetry. I cry when I listen to this and it only gets much worse because I feel Nate thinks of this too and pours his heart into these songs, and you feel it, the connection between your events and his, his depression and heartache, his love and enchantment, all funneled through a song. Simple beautiful. Fun. Is incredible.

+Andrew Lopez Let me word it as soulful as I can. The song portrays a love that is quite rare. One that isn't materialistic, one that blooms, one that doesn't simply rely on what the other has, but on what you two have. Plus, the instrumentals makes the emotional image even more strong.

I looked up this song randomly, and now that it's brought up to my memory. I realised this is the song my ex boyfriend sent to me four years ago. We dated for three years and we broke up six months ago because he told me He didn't want marriage or children. This song takes me back to simpler times when anything was possible with him in terms of future. Despite the heart break, I still love him and wish him the best. This song is all I have left. I would have rather have touched one hair on his head then to have never.

Slow down, we've got time left to be lazy All the kids have bloomed from babies into flowers in our eyes We've got fifty good years left to spend out in the garden I don't care to beg your pardon, we should live until we die We were barely eighteen when we crossed collective hearts It was cold, but it got warm when you barely crossed my eye And then you turned, put out your hand, and you asked me to dance I knew nothing of romance, but it was love at second sight I swear when I grow up I won't just buy you a rose I will buy the flower shop, and you will never be lonely For even if the sun stops waking up over the fields I will not leave, I will not leave 'til it's our time So just take my hand, you know that I will never leave your side It was the winter of '86, all the fields had frozen over So we moved to Arizona to save our only son And now he's turned into a man, though he thinks just like his mother He believes we're all just lovers, he sees hope in everyone And even though she moved away, we always get calls from our daughter She has eyes just like her father's, they are blue when skies are gray And just like him she never stops, never takes the day for granted Works for everything that's handed to her, never once complains You think that I nearly lost you when the doctors tried to take you away Like the night you took my hand beside the fire thirty years ago to this day You swore you'd be here 'til we decide that it's our time But it's not time, you never quit in all your life So just take my hand, you know that I will never leave your side You're the love of my life, you know that I will never leave your side You come home from work, and you kiss me on the eye You curse the dog, you say that I should never feed them what is ours So we move out to the garden, look at everything we've grown And the kids are coming home so I'll set the table; you can make the fire

He's singing to his mother from his father's perspective: I listened to "On Your Porch" by The Format and instantly remembered this song! Both songs talk about when Nate's dad got sick. I went to one of their concerts a couple of months ago, and when Nate sang the part, "I swear when I grow up, I won't just buy you a rose.."

I've had this album for a while never really listened to what the song was saying, but on my drive home I did. I was reminded of my fiance and how I can't wait to build a life with her. This song brought forth some kind of surge inside me and I had to tell her about it. Of course she's at work and won't see my text until later on, so I had to get on the first video of the song and tell you guys. Such a great song!
