Hi Chuck, I enjoy your content and the way you present it. I do have some experience with nmap myself. What I'd like to add for people who are interested is, that you still can scan hosts which seem (!) to be down. A default nmap scan will do a quick icmp (ping) scan against the host. If there is no response, it will assume that the host is down and don't even start any further scans. However, a lot of servers are configured to not react to any icmp calls, but are still up. So use the switch "-Pn" in addition. It will treat the host as if it is up and do the scans anyway. If you still run into a lot of errors, the host might be down for real or you are blocked by a firewall. Cheers

@@oryan404 unfortunately this is incorrect - in the man or docu, it is stated that "-Pn" will skip host discovery. Therefore not a ping sweep. I had to google it myself - according the nmap-docu the switch "-sn" is commonly reffered to as "ping sweep". Hope I could help with that info :)

Hope this finds someone who needs it: I'm a veteran and I'm in a cybersec boot-camp right now. It is so bad and they just shovel you through. You can press Ctrl+L to clear your terminal instead of having to type 'clear'

Ctrl+L doesn't clear the screen, only positions your prompt at the top of the screen, so if you scroll up, you'll end up with the same cluttered text of which you were trying to get rid. "clear" command on the other hand properly clears the text from your terminal

CLARIFICATION : As Chuck said, Stealthy TCP handshake isn't stealthy no more. Any good IDS will definitely lookout for nmap based scanning, and if they see a TCP handshake not being completely made, red flags will go up. Not necessary to worry about if you do pentesting or bug bounties, but this might be helpful in other red team vs blue team competitions.

Works a lot better then the net discover tool. What I have noticed scanning networks is that there a lot of ports open on the printers. When I was a printer tech once a month we had to take a meter reading on the printers (page count). So the first month I simply wrote down the IP addresses and the locations and would be able to get meter readings on 75% of the printers by plugging my laptop into the network and simply typed in the network address. The other 25% of the printers were USB printers so had to get the readings manually.
