Great voice, bruh! Thanks for this expertly-done comparison. Though my vocal style is different, I can clearly see how the 103 most definitely is the better pick because it captures more depth in the voice. It's as if you get a more complete, living "picture" of the voice, whereas the 102 sounds contained. Thanks again, and much success in all you do.
@halcyo3 жыл бұрын
First off- fantastic vocal! You could make music on any mic with that instrument! The TLM 103 is a better vocal mic cuz it's got some more air and presence. The sound is more upfront and shiny. The 102 was sort of designed as more of a versatile instrument mic. It's tiny size was to help with placement on drum kits, and other weird places. On your vocal, it's a little dull and 2d.

Thanks for checking out the video! And thanks for the musicality appreciation! I’ve personally gotten solid results with the 102 when using an outboard preamp and some external processing. @@hannahpaigeduyongco5714 you’re wrong about it being a “podcast” mic. Neumann themselves call it the “home studio microphone” so what u said it completely false. The tlm 102 is obviously for recording music its a studio condenser microphone which was not made to be a “podcast mic”. The foam inside is to help with sibilance and stuff like that
@NKWTI2 жыл бұрын
It's size doesn't mean that it was meant for instruments, but it of course can be used for that and I'm sure the size helps, but what you say is factually false. Neumann themselves market this as a more affordable home/project studio mic with the expectation that it will be used for singing/vocals/voice over/narration, etc. and still be able to get that Neumann quality.

I usually don't comment on channels with my main channel, but felt the need because I love the Neumann mic lineup and because this was a great comparison. Nice voice, bro! First off, it has a lot to do with what headphones you are using while listening to this. I have a pair of top-notch headphones, and to me, the TLM 103 sounds a lot better, crisp, and brighter. There is a reason why the TLM 103 is more expensive. Pay more, and you get more, the majority of the time. You're getting a high-quality industry-standard mic when you purchase the 103. If you go to major music recording studios as well as professional film studios, you will find the 103, not the 102. That right there tells it all. BTW. I own the 103, and it's freakishly AMAZING! Since I am all about quality, I needed the best for my narrations in my animations and films. Anyways...keep up the great work and good luck with your channel! 👍

Much appreciation for checking out the video and the kind words. I’ve often looked at the 103 as a stripped down version of the u87 (and of course totally different topology). A lot of the studio’s I’ve been in choose a u87 over a lot of mics. Of course there’s a fair amount of tube condensers that are used and other FET condensers that are great options for V/O or audio recording. I’m a firm believe that the vocal chain plays a big part too. I wouldn’t typically track anything dry like I did in this example. And character preamps, along with processing makes a noticeable difference sonically. Again, thanks for the compliments and even checking out the video.

@CarlMooreMusic3 жыл бұрын
@@ryanreedtv3242 so my apologies for the SUPER late response. But the 103 and the 102 are voiced different from each other. I think some see the chronological order without viewing them as two different mics tonally. I would say the 103 has a more prevalent top end that ends up being desirable. I think the low end on it is tighter as well. So if that’s a tone you’re in need of, go for it. That’s essentially how I view all mics I purchase.

Simply delicious vocals. I'm torn between the two mics right now. I have a deep voice with a touch of nasal sibilance so am leaning to the more forgiving 102, but my vocal ability is riding in the wake of your superb control and feel for emotions. Great vid, thanks mate. I'm still no clearer which to go for but this comparison kept it real. They tried to make me sing metal when all I wanted to be was Nat King Cole :)
@orangemaniabrother22323 жыл бұрын
Yeah I'm torn between both. The u87 (or Advanced Audio CM87 is what I have) is too harsh and bright on me with too much distortion, if the 103 is like it in the harshness then it's the 102 for me, my voice is quite bassy and boomy with harsh tones too, so I'm thinking a transformerless mic with less presence is the way to go. It's such a hard vocal tone to work with, a never ending search for me. Advanced Audio's u89 clone is working for me as far as harshness is concerned, but then I think the transformer makes it slightly thick and unclear
@tiresiasreviews88293 жыл бұрын
@@orangemaniabrother2232 I went with the 102. Cost is s factor. But which ever you go for is a cracking mic! I think the 102 is the more forgiving option. I am conscious of my expression of sibilant sounds which just stick out over plosives. I was concerned the 103 might just be too revealing. This is kind of against the advice given to me by a producer who reckoned the 103 was the best mic for voice over work. All very well, but it's what you feel comfortable with in terms of rendition and cost. The 102 is a little rolled off perhaps but I would rather deal with its signature than the 103.

@@orangemaniabrother2232 From what I have read the AKG you have is a superb mic, but I have never used one. My experience is rather limited to Shure mics for rehearsal and performance. That being said, I would love to try your existing mic it's held in high regard. It's a bloody nightmare trying to choose and compare. It's like all audio equipment, so subjective. Just don't get into luxury watches or headphones and and tube amps. Thanks for the love and checking out the video. I really prescribe to the idea that a lot of factors are involved when choosing a mic/voice combo. I think the song/source material plays a major factor. The tonal intention is a factor as well (clean, gritty/edgy, etc..). The preamp used totally plays a part as well as any other processing in the chain. With all that being said, the 102 has less of a cut on the low end so that could be beneficial for maybe a thinner vocalist (source). This is my opinion so use it for what it’s worth but more often than not, I like the way the top end of the 103 sits naturally over the 102. That being said, I’ve had the 102 for 5yrs I think and have used it on pretty much everything (lead vocals to shakers). I’ll NEVER get rid of it and I’d gladly recommend it. I haven’t had the chance to try out the mk4 but If I can get my hands on one, I’ll gladly do a review.

I wanna hear your thoughts dude? For me the 103 cuts into the mix way better with the clarity in the highs and high mids, and for some reason that makes my ears feel that the bass end is also better articulated. Are these completely different caps? Honestly the 102 didn't have the Neumann ting... the 103 was just that 3% better all round. I feel like I would have to add EQ to bring out the subject with 102, but the raw tone of the 103 is just brighter and fuller. Super subtle, maybe not £400 worth of EQ... What do you think??? Also stunning vocal dude, that acapella is glorious.
@CarlMooreMusic3 жыл бұрын
Much appreciation for the kind words! I’ve somewhat concluded on this that I’d use the 103 for lead vox and the 102 for BGVs. I like how the the top end sits on the 103 in this example but I do feel like the roll off on the 102 makes the low end on it sound more prevalent, if needed. Ultimately, I think they’re both solid mics that will certainly get the job done. In the context of music, we don’t hear them switched like it is here and there’s a fair deal more processing (even if natural sounding) than it is here too. So no one would hear them in this type of comparison fashion

@CarlMooreMusic3 жыл бұрын
I think how it “sits in the mix” is impacted behind the signal chain. In this example, I’m using clean preamps as well as no EQ/compression on the front end. I always track with an external preamp, some form of EQ even if it’s filtering, and compression. Most times it’s serial compression. That definitely plays a part on where the vox naturally sits in the mix and any saturation from those other outboard pieces help to compliment a mics natural tone. I have an upper register but my lower register is a little more prominent. So I’m considered a baritone with a range. The source material matters but I’d recommend either mic as an option to get the job done. I’m not familiar with that mod for the 102. I’d have to check it out.

Great style in your good voice! More presence & mid range capture on TLM 103 ,but I still love the brightness & crisp sound of the 102.Maybe a combination of both would be the best ! Whoever played the keyboard on that track is just too good! Wanna hire him for my church. 😊

Very helpful video. From what I can tell in this video and others, the TLM 103 has more top end. I'm actually borrowing one from a friend and loving it. The top end is "sparkly" without being piercing. I was wondering if I could save a bit of money by getting the 102 instead. But it seems like if I want that specific sparkly sound I might need the 103? Apparently, there's foam over the capsule in the 102 and if you remove that it brightens it up a bit. But without a way to test that, maybe I should just stick to the mic I know I love.
@CarlMooreMusic3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for checking out the video and commenting! I’ve recently removed the foam insert from my current 102. Obviously that will have an altering effect on the tonal characteristic but I will say, IMHO, the 102 is a SOLID mic. I’ve NEVER had issues with it (foam in/out). Additionally, in these videos, I’ve refrained from using outboard gear in the chain, but I definitely track my final vocals with some external preamp, pultec style EQ and serial compression (depending on the source material and source being captured). Those components can help to bring out the qualities I need (more top end, and etc…). I’ve got got more to say on this topic. But I’ll stop here

@@CarlMooreMusic after all the processing which mic do you end up choosing 102 or 103?
@CarlMooreMusic2 жыл бұрын
It honestly depends on the source. I like the natural sounding low end on the 102 and in this source material example, I liked the 103 better on the lead. I slightly tamed the sibilance but the mids were cool too me and it felt better with my eyes closed. So I went with it for the lead and the 102 for the BGvs

I think I prefer the TLM 102 to your tone. More bottom end and less nasal. A bit of eq on low frequencies would make it more balanced, though.
@CarlMooreMusic4 жыл бұрын
Definitely an option! For variance between the lead and background, I’d probably use the 102 on lead and the 103 on BGVs. The more prevalent roll off on the low end seems more appropriate for the bgvox in my opinion. But thanks for checking out the video and commenting!

Got a nice "Neo-soul Musicsouldchildish" vibe to it. Nice job man!! I'm surprised but the 103 seems to sound more like a record than the 102. Didn't think there would be a noticeable difference, but the 103 sounds more familiar quality wise. If that makes any sense. Peace!

For this style, imho, the 102 was more soulful and smooth. Great vocals. Was Stevie Wonder an influence?
@CarlMooreMusic3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for checking out the video and commenting! I appreciate your perspective. I’m honestly not sure anyone in the last 50-55yrs of RnB, soul, funk, band music, live instrumentation could say that Stevie Wonder isn’t an influence. However Sunny is a Marvin Gaye song. Musiq Soulchild sampled it in the his song “Just Friends” back in 2000. I referenced that flavor in this arrangement (music and vocals). And then I added my own expression to it.
@ejh12813 жыл бұрын
Great vocals really! Bobby Hebb isn't it. That wrote Sunny? He was in a Salem MA music store called Bill's Music back in the late 90's and when he left, the owner Bill said "That was Bobby Hebb" the guy that wrote "Sunny" It was pretty cool :) Yah you are so right about Stevie Wonder as an influence.

Thanks for checking out the channel and commenting! I hear ALOT of bad things about the 103 and I just don’t get it. I think it’s a solid mic that gets the job done.
I actually like the 102 better with your voice . Of course they can both be eq'ed, but right out of the box the 102's mids were softer . I have a love / hate relationship with mids . As we all do I'm sure. Fuckin Mids!! But I think they're both great . I was expecting more of a contrast between them considering the price difference. Thanks . I've been wondering what the difference was.. I was about to purchase one or the other. Do you have one with the TLM103 OR TLM102 vs the U87? All the other comparisons have the vocals in context. For this I prefer it as you did soloed.
@CarlMooreMusic2 жыл бұрын
I unfortunately don’t have a u87 or u87ai comparison video yet. Trying to get my hands on one at a decent price. Mids are the solution and the problem at the same time. Always trying to accurately represent that area of the sound spectrum without all the unpleasant aspects. Plus I have a natural ugly resonance at like 1.1-1.5kHz that I’m always pulling out. I’ve personally felt like I’d use the 102 on BGVs and the 103 on lead Vox but for me, mic choices depend on the source material, the source being captured, and the desired goal of the vocal tone. Ultimately, I’ve seen where I can use both mics and get good solid results. I don’t hear that price difference though lol

@CarlMooreMusic3 жыл бұрын
The low end cut on the 102 isn’t as high as the 103 so I fee like it’s a more natural representation of the lows. I’ve seen opinions that the 102 is vastly inferior to the 103 but I just don’t have that experience with that mic. I get solid results with both. Thanks for checking out the video and commenting!

@@CarlMooreMusic I mostly do live sound, so studio condensers aren't really my field of expertise, tho I'm very used to hearing microphones (obviously). And yes, the TLM103 does sound better, especially in the context of music. But then again, you expect that when it costs, what, almost double the other?
@CarlMooreMusic3 жыл бұрын
Good stuff! I’m a firm believer that making sure the mic is best for the source being captured, and there’s good components all around (preamp, Eq, comp). When that’s considered as well as a solid performance that’s captured, certain mic differences are just the “icing on the cake”
@modvind3 жыл бұрын
@@CarlMooreMusic sure! Getting it right at the source is the most important, then finding a mic that compliments said source is equally important. Then you just continue down the signal chain.
