I think it's important to be in tune with your body, keeping in mind you can build a tolerance/deficit to any drug or neurotransmitter to maintain homeostasis. Just because a drug or natural supplement has a certain affect that you like today, it likely will loose its efficacy if you choose to use it every day.

Great video! I have found L-theanine to be pretty solid for focusing. It is interesting that IQ or cognition cannot be directly enhanced with homeostatic targets: increasing BDNF, Choline, TMS, what have you. Our cognitive load does fluctuate throughout the day (whereas IQ is ideally a static measurement) and we have some agency with our cognitive load. I think these smart drugs have tiny effect sizes because they target an allostatic system, and common college age psychiatric problems tend to involve expectations/performance mismatches rather than*significant* losses in IQ i.e. Dementia. If actually accessed, I think behavioral elements (mental-relaxing, therapy, exercise etc.) are so much more reliable for subjective cognitive performance. They restructure our behavioral cognition in context - I also suspect the brain limits discrete "overclocking" because at the least risk of mania, delusions.

I was intrigued about your seeking of a sure to cognitive deficiencies - I studies these drugs for almost two decades now. Some of them DO work but in my humble opinion, far from all of them

Great video! I myself use some of these substances, mainly modafinil. With moderate use they sure help with my procrastination.

@@PersonalBlob 200mg, zero to four times a week. Many people say that there is no tolerance build up with modafinil. This is misleading. There definitely is a tolerance to the dopamine reuptake inhibition.

have you ever investigated Noopept? Selegiline?

I know something of them. Noopept certainly has psychoactivity and perhaps some effects on memory, but not really convinced of a universal nootropic effect.

This was a great video! A video on the effects of cannabidiol (CBD), metabolism and interactions, whether it reduces anxiety or not, potential for use in alzheimers and TBI patients, etc. would be awesome.

Thanks! I'll add it to my (long) list. I'm working on a video related to the topic, but not quite it.

When we talk about Cannabidiol (CBD), it's quite a multi-faceted compound. Here's what you're looking for: Negative Effects: Most folks tolerate CBD pretty well, but some do report side effects. These can include drowsiness, dry mouth, reduced appetite, diarrhea, and even fatigue. Everyone's body is different, so it's always good to be cautious and listen to your own. Regarding metabolism, CBD does get processed by the liver. High doses can affect liver enzymes, which could suggest liver inflammation or damage. It's something to keep an eye on if someone is taking CBD regularly. Interactions: CBD can interact with several medications, primarily because it affects enzymes crucial for metabolizing drugs in the liver. If you or anyone is on medications, especially strong ones or those metabolized by the liver (like blood thinners), it's super essential to consult with a doctor before mixing in CBD. Anxiety: One of the reasons many people turn to CBD is its potential for reducing anxiety. And there's some good news here! Several studies have indicated that CBD might help reduce anxiety. Some people swear by its calming effects, though, as with all things, it might not work for everyone. Alzheimer's and TBI: There's ongoing research into the benefits of CBD for conditions like Alzheimer's and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). Some studies suggest CBD might help with neuroprotection and reducing inflammation, which could be beneficial for these conditions. However, it's early days, and more research is definitely needed before we can make definitive conclusions.

Hey! So happy to have found your channel and even more cool to find out that you work at my university! Over the last winter I read about dextromethorphan and read a bit about it's mechanism of action inspired by an incredibly old reddit account. Basically this redditor hypothesized that low dose DXM (30/45mg of DXM) 1-2h before sleep would cause upregulation at D1 (If I remember correctly, via COMKII) and nicotinergic receptor(s) would allow for better sleep quality or increase motivation in the morning. My knowledge and skills for evaluating this hypotheses run out so is there any basis this could even potentially work? DXMs long half-life also worries me, since I found that the subjective increase in motivation in the morning (Extremely bad measure I know) decreased after a day or two of use. Your thoughts?

Nice to hear! It's been a while since I've looked at DXM, but it does seem to have some interesting effects. Generally, I am quite wary of taking any drugs before sleep, since it is quite a delicate physiological process that we still know little about. A small dose is likely not super harmful, but cannot really comment on whether that would even hypothetically have any beneficial effects. Obviously there is close to 0 evidence to support such a hypothesis.
