Don't know what neuroplasticity is? That's ok. Jim didn't either, but our expert Dr. Greg Thielman will show all of us the way.

As a brain injury survivor, thank you for this. I fell off a mountain about 6 years back.

I'm sorry to hear that brother, especially as a cyclist. What part of your brain was damaged? Obvious reasons, usually it's the PFC and causes major interruptions in impulse control and aggression, aggravation and depression. I hope this isn't your case, but I'm curious to know how it affected you. Many famous people have TBI and not just football players, boxers and UFC fighters. Roseanne Barr probably would never have made it in comedy if it weren't for her traumatic brain injury; then again she probably would have been canceled if it weren't for that, either. Gary Busey is another classic example, had his head cracked open in a motorcycle and I believe was run over by a bus. That's why his face is not symmetrical and he's so wild. Since I can't crawl into the brain of someone with TBI, I often wonder what it's like and if one can tell that they are now different than they were beforehand?

I wish I knew, I don't have functional health insurance, like millions of Americans. I've had to struggle and learn on my own. The first few years were a blur, luckily I'm a custodian, so I am alone most of the time, and have time to think and listen to informative podcasts. Haha.

There is no easy way to put the change into words. After my brain rewired itself, it's like everything before was a different person entirely. He was smarter, quicker witted, far more resilient to the daily stresses of life. Now I suffer nearly constant brain fog, as we call it. I get over stimulated easily, I'm far more forgetful, and I'm always tired. I hit a tree forehead first, and dropped about 20 feet, then rolled another 50. If my brother wasn't with me, I'd be dead.

@@justinbrown2212 well I'll tell you this much man, you're pretty damned articulate and your thought processes seem to be linear. It seems to me good and disturbing in a way to know that you can tell the difference between the way things are and they were before the accident, you know what I mean? I don't know, maybe there isn't a good side to it; I don't want to be negative, but talking about it honestly is I think the healthiest way to deal with hardships. I wouldn't think for a moment from your ability to write that you have any type of impairment. I haven't read all your comments yet, but have you thought about writing for a living? Maybe writing comedy, I'm not sure how funny you are, but you are a good writer. As I mentioned with Gary busey and Roseanne, sometimes embracing the weirdness or wildness can make you successful - I know I'm weird as fuck, everybody tells me that and I'm wild as hell, I have terrible impulse control, have been arrested 40-something times (got clean 5 years ago and it hasn't happened since, thankfully), but I'm also much more open to novelty and the unknown then anyone I know. More accepting, more compassionate, my ability to empathize is definitely on another level than most that I am around, because I'm appalled at some of the things that my most favorite people say and do at times. But most of all, people think I'm funny as fuck, and I'm not trying to blow myself up for anything, I'm just reporting what I'm told by most people. As a matter of fact, my new girlfriend and I are going to do open mic hopefully next weekend for the first time at 44 and 55. I started writing jokes at the beginning of the pandemic and have quite a bit. It's unbelievable how bad beginners are at open mic, so I don't think I'll bomb completely. I did a meet-and-greet with Jim Jefferies and he gave me some advice, one of the coolest moments of my life: maybe you should try that out man and work the accident into your opening bit? Sorry man I'm not a counselor, I'm not a doctor, I'm not even a comic I'm just a regular dude who gives a shit and took some college courses on psychology. I wish you the best brother, keep writing! Cheers your brother

Sorry to hear that man - there's nothing worse than things like that happening while doing something you love. Your courage, cheerfulness and resolution will bring you victory over this. Shit won't change but you seem like the adventurous type and I don't doubt for a second that you can overcome your feelings around your injury and start to live again rather than survive - best wishes bro

This may sound corny, but Square Dancing is incredible for neuro-plasticity exercise. I had a dancer in our club who had been subject to very severe brain damage many years prior to her discovering our activity. She was followed by a group of professors in the major neuro-clinic in Paris. After joining our club, she made enormous progress in her memory, expression coordination and confidence. Today, the activity in America is declining. When people look into it, they get the impression it's for old people, but that's primarily because there are many dancers still in the activity 70 years old or more. Look into it while you're young, and give it a try.

Hi Jim! thankyou for covering this issue, as an MS patient that is struggling to walk again it is always good to re-enforce that neuroplasticity helps me when I help it. On a side note, I first discovered you when I was diagnosed, and your comedy has helped me immeasurably, thank you again!

This is crazy, for the last 2 hours I've been talking about drug abuse and neuroplasticity in the comment section of a video of some douchebag berating an addict on a California street corner. On a lighter note, praise Odin it's Tuesday! Time for my favorite pod.

I just watched a video of a volunteer medic (Brandon Mitchell) in Ukraine, where he was talking about driving over a bomb and getting a brain injury - lots of advice from comments about recovering. It's a fascinating topic and relevant for everyone especially as we age.

@@6egotronix In the fall of 2019 I was released from a year-long stint in the county preparing myself to go to prison again. I was very lucky in that the dope was in two separate baggies, each containing 2 g's - found #1 as they initially searched me & the second many hours later on the hospital floor next to my bed (they were concerned I'd overdose), adding a second charge of possession. Had they been found together, I'd still be in prison for trafficking. I went to jail, completed a substance abuse class & with a bit of luck & I suspect privilege, my lawyer convinced the judge that I was redeemable and no liability because I was to immediately move to Florida, where both of my parents already to start rehab. Rehab was a bluff and I knew it because I knew I was done. I've noticed that every 12 step rehab I've interacted with frowns upon marijuana use to the point of uncomfortability. Here I am almost five years later, smoking weed and maintaining "fuck the rest."

Hi Jack - can you pass this onto Jim, we are loving his game show here in Oz. Seven had a strong ratings winner in their new quiz program The 1% Club. Hosted by comedian Jim Jeffries, - pictured - the show, which sees 100 contestants tested on their logic and common sense, drew 469,000 viewers in the metro centres. Also, can you ask him one question, when the contestants are answering the questions, are the hearing his commentary, it's so funny but I have to pause otherwise I can't concentrate on the question - ha ha ha
