A very moving video. The way that Steve and Pauline relate to each other in their dialogue here is a brilliant example of how positive relating through social interest animates and enlivens.

Definitely a powerful and thought provoking video that all of us can relate to in one form or another. I know for me, I’ve always been heavily attracted to the caricature of the wise hermit that secludes himself from society to gain deep spiritual and philosophical insight. Recognizing how maladaptive and destructive that idea is has really helped me relate to myself and the outside world far better. Insight comes from acting in and relating to the world, not by secluding oneself from it.

I do hope we can all better support each other to genuinely love (in the broadest possible terms: enabling short-term immediate gratification is not always showing love, either for ourselves or others) themselves / ourselves / each other (both present and future).

Again, analytic acumen in action as always from Jung To Live By! It's everywhere, I agree. Selfishness is pervasive because of instincts gone awry and the powerful suggestions planted in our unconscious by social constructs used as manipulative tools to neuter personal power and muddy the streams of our minds. It seems as if people are satisfied with group think and double speak. What a strange affect to be so dull and capitulative.

14:30 is one of the most important bits of info ever shared on this channel. The way it was presented in this video sounds like influential narcissists tend to affect others unconsciously rather than intentionally? I can't help but feel that there is some sort of larger agenda at play whether it's by our Big Brother Government, Corporate Greed, or some other larger entities that are trying to demoralize and weaken society for their own benefit. I can't tell if my own lack of calling is a sign of narcissistic tendencies. I crave a calling, but can't seem to find one :(

Thank you SO MUCH for this discussion! I would LOVE to hear a discussion from you two about ARTISTS in the culture. Obviously ART (especially art making) is healthy and beneficial for everyone, but when it is paired with the gratification- / social media-machine quickly becomes perverted. Is being an artists on social media, perhaps, one of the biggest narcissitic traps of all (is it even possible to have a healthy side-hussle as an artist on socials)? @@JungToLiveBy Thanks for your reply. I didn't expect that. I've been listening to hours of your videos this weekend and I would like to compliment you both. You've gained my admiration as the wise guides I've been looking for. I'll be getting into the materials on your website next but I want to continue to learn more of the vocabulary and watch more videos first, as a lot of them are of interest to me. It is extremely rare to find anyone in our age who is able to approach hot button topics with mature concern without apparent bias, fear, and political axes to grind,. You demonstrate the balance of courage and yet non-obsession with the way that the political environment is affecting us, while looking it straight in the eye and calling it what it is. You know that your message won't reach all because of your unwillinness to polarize, and yet you give your best for those few who will listen. This capacity is a litmus test for me and you have my respect. I feel that polarizing politics has completely consumed or eclipsed the human being in our age in almost all respects. It's easy to feel fear and resentment in the face of this. I feel these things very personally. Yet the answer is not more politics, as tempting as that is, but rather the building of real human wholeness and true community as an alternative to it. It's important to note how our culture is, as it's having a huge affect on everyone, but it seems that currently everyone is so aware of that fact that they can't see to themselves to remove the affect. They see the answer as being on the outside rather than the inside. I'd rather say, how do we become whole, mature and able to relate to ourselves, others and the larger reality we live in? You strike this balance, which indicates you follow your worldview rather than only preach it. I feel overwhelmed. In fact "overwhelmed" sums up my life in one word from childhood till now in middle age. It deeply comforts me to find people I can trust as humans who have wisdom and experience in things that are central to my path so that perhaps some day I won't be overwhelmed any longer. ~ Ben

This video appeared just in time after so much synchronicities of confusions. Had a situation in discord and a bird hit my car yesterday as I was driving home and it seemed like events that where disorienting. But was able to affirm myself about the direction and intentions of the individual that inflicted that on me on discord, because of a lame joke. After that, things started to slowly settled down.

Some gurus teach how to interact with women, in theory facilitating reproduction. Does narcissism only pertain to those attracted to gurus propagating abstinence or solitude? An “I need no one but myself” dynamic? I hope this question is not too self-serving. Hope you are well and thank you for doing this work.

As a coach myself I found this video helpful. I’ve been questioning my motivations behind putting myself ‘out there’ on the internet. I know a part of me is motivated by social approval and I know that can easily spiral into something beyond my control. Therefore, I prefer to keep my practice off social media. This is of course a challenge, because my reach is smaller; but, that’s not necessarily a bad thing. If anything, it protects me from my worst habits To go further, I do not give advice as a coach, or suggestions. I cannot and do not pretend to know what’s best for others. I simply help others expand their awareness through inquiry. My practice is small, I have 3-6 clients. I get to focus on serving them, and that is enough for me.

Narcissism’s certainly in my family, I’m the scapegoat child, I’ve had to sell my house and move away because I put up boundaries and started telling them what they were doing was evil. Obviously narcs can’t self reflect so the abuse got worse. They all spread lies about me saying I was having mental issues and needed to see a psychiatrist. Narcissism truly is an epidemic, it’s going to get worse. There’s no toxic masculinity or toxic femininity, toxic is toxic and usually people who are toxic have highly narcissistic traits or full blown NPD.

Thank you both. 🙏. 100% reflects my own thoughts and feelings. I also have personal experience of biological narcissism . I have three sons and have made sure they understand much of what you have concerns about also.. it’s not an easy task as one has to be careful not to induce excessive fear or paranoia but I have long felt it to be an important role of modern parenting. Ive watched it steadily grow and I’ve had to test my own judgment and awareness which has also been a challenge at times. I witness daily, younger (and older actually ) people’s relating and and I find increasingly younger women giving my the kind of ‘ attention’ they should be giving to their own age group of men and I am painfully aware of its origins of misdirection. I feel Really supported by the conversation here. And it’s something I feel compelled to help others with and it’s been on my mind for some time. No doubt it will materialise at some point given the right opportunity. However, it should begin at home I feel. Actually I think society functions mostly BECAUSE of selfless service of others. However, I watch this changing as people say ‘what’s in it for me’ and this is largely because of the corporatisation of working attitudes and conditions. I now work in very difficult areas of mental health ( a personal choice) and most go into this with good intentions but are left increasingly devoid of meaning and feel used and devalued by a corporatist model of humans. Very much looking forward to studying with you at some point. As an interesting example.. my younger son loves dancing ballet, riding motorbikes and climbing trees😁.

Amazing video! Pauline is spot on about the lack of individuality as I've seen this recently. I'm born in 94 and I've always somewhat been able to distinguish as I've gotten older that various trends (fashion in particular) reduce those individuals to that style and/or how they present themselves verbally and non verbally. Quite similar to how some men can become stereotypes with regards to what they do, the way they speak, interests etc.

Great video as always! Another thing about mating and relating is how so much of it is done thru artificial, non-instinctual (or instinctually confusing) mediums like text messaging. Such a huge percentage of relating is happening via a medium that provides THE LEAST amount of communication cues AND THE MOST possibility for miscommunication. Nowadays to just give someone a call is often perceived as being rude, overly invasive, or too needy. The technology is surely no friend of instinct. - Also, so few mention how hormonal birth control is affecting mating/relating. Again, a “technology” that scrambles instincts. Even mentioning that it might not be the best idea to manipulate one’s own hormones, might get one called a narcissist. I mean, who other than a “narcissist” would think they might “know better than” (i.e. have some insight) the vast majority of doctors who never give it a second thought, right? When considering the bio-psycho-social model, I can’t help but wonder if/how hormonal birth control might play into animus possession. - Even to “speak up” in the face of the sound of silence will get one called a “narcissist”. That’s a whole other cultural shit test! - I love the book “The Earth Has A Soul”, in which Meredith Sabini pulls from Jung’s work so much of what he said regarding technology. Jung was an absolute genius to have been so acutely aware of how disconnection from instinct was causing so many problems for modern man.

Excellent and thought-provoking. Also agree with Joseph B. I am an Artist and making Paintings has saved my life- it was how I got through the ' trauma' of adolescence and losing a parent at a young parent- but over the years it has warped into an addiction to chasing exhibition opportunities and self-marketing which ultimately leave one hollowed out and alienated from close relationships. I suppose creatives have to wake up to the deadening hand of capitalism and find ways to turn their gift into a form of empathy and healing energy for others.

Fantastic video. What I understand is this...Nietzsche = narcissism and when Jung is added with Nietzsche is enshrouds the narcissism with fantasy , and therefore amplifies narcissism itself to a whole new disturbing level? How can we distinguish self-improvement and wanting to self improve from narcissism? Has another (previous) society gone through this phase of cultural narcissism before? What occurs? Is there a moment that we can reverse this process?

The continual manipulation, of the instincts of others, conscious or otherwise, is an insufferable way to live. What hope is there for a genetic narcissist if, hypothetically, there was a hope to be had? Is there truly no path that can unfold for a genetic narcissist in which they overcome their pathology?

I imagine that two world wars have had a terrible weakening effect on the gene pool. Could it be that on a purely biological level, the weaker genes (dampened instincts) are on some level being edited out of the pool to some extent? These darwinian waves must happen in cycles. As I'm having this rather cold and eugenic thought, I'm also reminded of the cultural and psychological input of the trans and non binary stuff which is very prolific - I've seen it first hand with my friends children that are a little older than my own. I imagine it's round the corner at a school near me. It seems nothing short of cultural hari kiri & I've witnessed how hard it is for parents to guide their kids through it without appearing ignorant or disrespectful. It's natural for teenagers to attach to whatever trend is counter culture, however the end point of the gender game is permanent physical and psychological damage... its not in the same league as weed and slipknot imho

Remember, the Trickster works both sides of a polarity, according to the position you take towards it. Either way, it’ll reflect back, to you, what you brought with you. If you cancel out, you don’t learn. If you chose one or the other, you don’t learn. What is within, (then) so too, is without. The wider perspective transcends opposites, and often isn’t even concerned with the inertia of their detail. Solving deep emotional, psychological and lifespan development issues, for people other than ourselves, gifts the necessary experience.
