Leaving a comment here for any Asian brothers and sisters out there that have fair/light olive skin - you do exist! You can still be anywhere on the spectrum between neutral/cool/warm (although if you're Asian, you're most likely going to be between neutral and warm) but ALSO have your skin pull a little green... and therefore olive. Just wanted to raise awareness so that hopefully more cosmetic brands will provide us with product options in the future.

There is a "club" of us who have a darker face than our body and if we try to match our body, the foundation makes us look ashy. If we match our face, then the dark becomes more "obvious" of a difference between face and body.

I think that a solution for this would be a foundation formulated with saturated, (semi-)transparent pigments with a less opaque base. Kinda like a good lipgloss which shows colour but doesn't cling to the lip's texture, but also sets. If it doesn't exist, than it should be formulated asap.

I am half Eastern European (slavic) and half scandinavian. I have a light neutral olive colored skin. You can be olive and light. In the summer I get much browner, and lose all color in the winter. Warm foudation looks yellow on me, neutral looks orange and cold looks pink or gray. I am olive and light, blond and blue-eyed.

Easiest way to tell if you're olive-toned...take a green eyeshadow at the same depth of your skin color (fair, light, medium, tan, dark, deep, etc.) and blend it out on your skin...if it starts to "disappear" compared to a same depth of pink/yellow/blue/etc. then that's how you know

Are you really saying if you have light eyes you don't have olive skin? That is so very untrue, and that is exactly why it's taken me 10+ years to get my colors right. I've noticed that warmer skin people have a natural peachy lip color, whereas the cooler skin tone people have a mauve color, almost like a purplish tone. This was a dead giveaway for me, because even though I have dark skin and thought that I had a warmer coloring, it was the lips that made me realize that I look best in cool tones.

Also, I'd like to add that in my experience the confusion seems to be not so much on the "undertone," but on the saturation of color of the skin. Lots of people tell me that I am warm-toned because of my level of skin pigment/saturation of color on the surface. Yet said saturation is not a warm looking saturation, but rather a soft cool light brown pigmentation/saturation.

See, I'm part Spaniard and part Cherokee, which both have olive skin tones; I have a lot of fair olive skin in my family and I believe I am a fair olive as well. No foundation works for me because they're all super pink, even warm foundations until I add green to it. So are you kicking fair olive people out of the color spectrum? Cuz that's kinda why I'm watching these videos... Cuz I'm fair olive and don't know what colors to go for... I know it is just an opinion, but you're kinda pushing away a wide spectrum of people that need the most help with their colors, makeup, and more because of that green... My fellow olive people, stand up and support our green! We exist and we are real!

I don't know what brands you use, but you may need to buy a prestige brand rather than a drugstore brand, because the prestige brands typically have a wider color range. I'm white and Cherokee, and I have pale olive skin. I use the Bare Minerals Complexion Rescue in Wheat. You can go to Sephora, and they have a computer that can analyze your skin tone and match you to different shades in different brands.

Olive skin tones don't show up easily in selfies IME. Cameras shift skin tones and they don't favor "sallow" (green). You really gotta shoot in RAW and nail the white balance and do profiling. Even then, you can be a warm cool or neutral Olive. When compared to other people in real life though, the green sticks out like a sore thumb if you are olive. Real life comparison really is the best way to tell olive.

Hi Jen ! I really enjoy your videos. Thank you for making them. Literally everybody describes me as having olive skin. My skin does not tolerate bright colors very well. I do believe I lean cool and I choose my neutral colors accordingly. However, some of my very best colors are on the warm side. It has been my experience that warm colors that have still a considerable amount of blue in them work beautifully. Yes, deeper colors seem to lend themselves to being cooler. A good example of the cooler warm tones are some soft not overly warm rusts, persimmon tones, mustard yellow and even some deep soft warm greens. Of course, the way a color is styled is also very important. The process of finding these colors isn't always easy. It is ironic that having neutrality to your skin can be even more problematic . So, thank you for offering the products that you do.

When I compare my skin to my husband’s, mine looks very yellow, his is very pink (cool). We’re both very white lol. I can’t wear any nudes or beige. So yeah I’m confused..

Hi! Just wanted to point out that just because people have dark hair and eyes doesn't determine what their skin tone is like ;) - which, I think, is something this KZbinr has referred to incorrectly. Without seeing you in person it's impossible to tell, but from what you've described, it's highly likely you have olive undertones. Whites tend to pull the "greenish" colour out of our skin and makes us look sickly/sallow - I'm assuming this is what happens to you. Try going to a MAC either a few different times or different locations (so that you get a different person matching you every time) and see what ends up looking closest. Even if their foundation doesn't work for you, you can use that as a jumping off point to look for other foundations. Hope this helps :)

Part of the confusion comes from a huge disagreement on what is warm and what is cool. I've seen people go as far as to say red is the warmest color (meaning its opposite green is the coldest), while others say yellow is the warmest (meaning purple is the coldest). As an artist, I contend that orange, particularly yellowy orange, is the warmest color. I agree that the burnt orange rust color is a good test for warm. That test brings out the example person's beautiful warm green eyes.

I fell down the rabbit hole of colour analysis 5 years ago. Let my hair go grey and ditched the black. I have been analysed, in person, as Bright, Warm and Light, Cool, Light and Muted, Light Spring and by Carol Tuttle by photos as DYT Type 1. This video helps me understand why as a Light, it is so difficult. I wear Bright and Cool on special occasions when I wear Bright make up. Otherwise I stick to a wardrobe that consists of soft blues, soft bluey greens (that match my eyes) and cool greys. I wear silver jewellery. I made a decision to do this as these colours harmonise with my greying hair and it makes me look more congruent. It has also made me want to buy clothes again when the angst of finding and feeling right in 'my' colours became too much. Sometimes, trying to fit into a programme is too stressful. Now I have my 'uniform' it's easier. Thanks Jen for another helpful video.

I would love to have perfect skin but I am wearing a little bit of yellow toned mineral powder here (Jane iredale Purepressed base in Bisque) since it matches my neck (my face is more pink and shows every vain too) I have always felt warm. My hands especially are quite yellow! As a child everyone told me i looked sick and ghostly all of the time! And every neutral makeup look very pink on me. But, if a foundation is too yellow it also looks quite off... i actually put a drop of blue mixer in most of my makeup, at it matches me perfectly - maybe it just pulls the pink out of the formula? Please tell me why that is if you know why the almost Grey foundation shades look good on me 😆 I have always felt light colors washes me out too, but i never felt drawn towards the orange and red spectrum... so that is very interesting. I will definatly try wearing more of those medium warm colors! I have s lot of jewel toned colors in my wardrobe - though most of it is petrol and purple. I was surprised to hear you found my eyes to be quite bright? i think they are a bit muddy, therefore i thought i could not wear too bright colors? Also very interesting! Thank you Jen! You mentioned both bright and soft... Am I a bright of soft then?

I have a similar skin tone as you do I'm glad she chose to analyze your photo. I have brown eyes and similar hair. I felt neutral and couldn't decide what colors looked best on me. When she put the burnt sienna drape on you I immediately knew I was warm because that color looks good on me. It looks really good on you too so I'd say you are warm. I've donated all of my bright clothing that just never looked right on me. Now I know why. I'm going to start wearing more beige, taupe and sienna. Btw your eyes are gorgeous 😍

What about if someone has eyes that are not so deep but the same hard to define skin undertone? My eyes are brown but not deep and are also difficult to define as either warm or cool and the skin tone has enough pigment not to be considered fair and not enough to be considered "colored" and has kind of an "olive" feel to it? It seems to me that neutral undertone is a real thing if we think of it as a large spectrum that varies from the warmest to the coolest. The neutral is somewhere around the middle, the closer it is to the middle the more neutral it'll be, and the farther away it is from the middle point, the more we can define is as either warm or cool. Of course, no one is exactly at the middle point, but many people are close enough to it to be categorized one way or another.

Can yellow be cool, and is it considered olive? I'm definitely more yellowy-looking than other people - it's obvious to me only when I'm tanned - but I don't think I'm that green (or green at all? I don't know, Im really bad at visuals). I was convinced for awhile I was olive but I also thought that yellow was warm, and I understand olive to be cool so I rejected that one. (but if yellow can be cool that could make sense). I used an app once that keeps telling me I'm cool winter, but sometimes it gives me soft autumn depending on the lighting. I've had people tell me I looked good in pastel/blush pink, but I also think pastels could make me look washed out. Could this be because I'm more tan now than I probably was back then? I understand that you can be olive and also pale, but that the undertone doesn't change no matter darkness. I don't look yellow at all when I'm pale - I look more pink and blue (but again I have no idea - I just can't tell). Since I'm so confused, am I neutral? I think I look fine in both good and silver...again...don't know, maybe neither, because I can't tell :) lol

Really great video! If I can, I would give it many thumbs up! I´m someone like Natalie. Normaly is my skin little warmer than her´s. My hair appeared sometimes as dark brown, sometimes as lighter brown with golden-orange undertones. ( It was not colored, but it was very long - so the sun also made his work.) I mostly wore darker, warmer, little bit softer colors. But I can tolerate some darker colder colors also. Now is my hair short, darker brown color with some grey hair too. My skin is lighter than normal, because I was a very long time in bed (surgery etc.) and I feel much more neutral. Many of my more warmer clothes doesnt now look very well. My skin is still warm, but I feel, the hair makes a huge difference - if I will color them, I can wear warm color again. So now I can wear soft warm and soft cool darker colors, but before I can wore also a realy warm colors like warm autumn. Thank You for Your work!

Great explanation of "neutral" looking people. I have come to the conclusion that in my case, I am olive cool-toned. My complexion has soft pink tones in some areas of my face and definitely a greenish tone overall. I am medium skin tone, not too light/fair and not too tan/dark. My eyes are darkest cool brown and my hair is black. I always hated the way I looked while wearing warm tones around my face, even warm toned makeup colors don't make me look right. So thank you for all the good information!

This is misleading, olive skin tone isn’t a skin tone shade. You can be very pale and be an olive undertone. You can have blonde hair and still be an olive skin tone. It’s just usually more noticeable in tanner people. Please do another video on fair olive skin tones. If you need resources, please look into the subreddit OliveMua on reddit. You can find a lot of information there. Thanks.

Hi! Just wanted to point out that just because you have dark features doesn't necessarily dictate what your skin tone should be ;) Even if you're on the warmer side, it's possible for you to be a neutral-warm as opposed to someone who's on the very warm side of the spectrum, which may be why you feel like you're more neutral than warm. :)

I'm asian and I definitely have a kind of yellow hue to my skin, but my actual tone looks very cool, almost pinky and ashy compared to my other asian friends who have the traditional warm yellow undertones. When I tan, I think I get more yellow but it has a more reddish tone compared to that glassic golden tan.

I’ll submit a photo - I would love for you use me . I had such trouble finding foundations because of light but nothing Ever looked right . I tired way to many to count cool doesn’t look good on me warm doesn’t look good me and neutral had me looking off . I went and was color matched and she said it was because I had green / olive undertone. She matched me and I feel like I can finally have make up and clothes that look flatter my skin tone. So I do die my hair but I naturally have very dark brown hair with red in it. I dye it rich chocolate with hint of red. I have pale blue eyes and fair skin. I feel make up wise I look best in browns , mauves, berry colors . Clothes wine colors and earth tones and i can do certain blues navy or bright light blue - I feel I look good I’m burned colors . I look awful in pastels . I would love to know what u think or what u come up with. Everyone always assumes if ur fair skinned ur cool.

I am always super confused as to my undertone. I am extremely fair but not as fair as a redhaired person might be. Like not just straight up white. I did the thing with my veins but some are blue, some are purple and some appear greenish, depending on where on my body I look for them. If I use a foundation with a warm undertone, it looks too yellow or orange on me, compared to my neck, cool toned ones make my face look more pink or redish than my neck and neutral foundation colors appear greyish and make me look super washed out and tired looking. I really don't know what is happening even though I am familiar with color theory as I was taught it in art school but I just can't figure out what I am hahahaha send help pls

Makeup colors for foundation, concealers, etc., should be the best match to the skin, forget about tones, etc., just get the best match you can. For makeup that adds color, like blush and lip color, just choose the ones that make you look the healthiest and prettiest.

I always just considered myself a warm undertone but it doesnt always make sense. My skin has an obvious yellow cast to it, but has a green shading to it especially when I'm not tan from the summer sun. In the summer I go quite golden and then a deep bronze with a yellow cast. I'm multiracial so it's an interesting mix. Never have found a foundation that works...even in the warm and golden or neutral and I'm definitely not cool or pink. Also could you do a color analysis on me !!! Pleeeeaaaaseee

I'm often mistaken for multiracial. Tip for the foundation. I have always had to get two shades. I feel like I am neutral so I tend to have a warm and a cool foundation that I mix accordingly to how my tan or lack of tan is doing. Other than than that I just make sure my make up and clothes match all cool or all warm shades to tilt my neutral tone one way or the other. I focus on the bright colors....I hope this helps!
