Heinrich Friedrich Dangberg, Sr. founded The Dangberg Ranch in Nevada in 1857. This ranch expanded to 48,000 acres, the largest in the Carson Valley at the time. The H. F. Dangberg Land and Livestock Company was formed to care for the farm and accompanying cattle. It was H. F. Dangberg, Jr. that began building and establishing Minden, Nevada, named for his birthplace in Germany. He planned and mapped out the town before breaking ground, providing a clear grid for the new settlement.

Minden has continued to grow, connecting to neighboring Gardnerville at the shared welcome sign on U.S. Highway 395. Stateline at Lake Tahoe is just a 30-minute drive from Minden, providing easy access to the Heavenly Shops and the acclaimed Edgewood Tahoe golf course. Carson City is 30 minutes north of Minden, full of rich Nevada history, like the Nevada State Capitol Building and the exhibits of the Nevada State Museum.
When driving along U.S. Highway 395, you’ll find the road lined with great restaurants unique to the area. Overland Restaurant & Pub is a farm-to-table restaurant with a full bar. Julio’s Restaurant or Topaz Lodge Steak House are two excellent choices for fine dining in Minden.
Minden Elementary School serves younger students of the community before they head to Carson Valley Middle School. The school is the former site of Douglas High School. At one point, the Carson Valley Museum served as the high school for both areas. The Douglas High Tigers found their current home on Highway 88 in 1975. Their big rivals are the Carson High Senators. The Douglas County School District building calls Minden home, serving the students of Minden, Gardnerville, Genoa, Stateline, Zephyr Cove, and Glenbrook.
The Carson Valley Golf Course is 10 minutes south from the center of Minden. The 18-hole golf course opened in 1965 and is now a staple to both Minden and Gardnerville. Next door is the Carson Valley Country Club, serving a unique blend of high-class American pub and steakhouse fare with a Basque twist. Carson Valley Swim Center is a favorite recreation center in the community. It offers a pool with water slides and diving boards, a lap pool, a rock-climbing wall, and a fitness center. You can enroll your children in the swim school or adults can sign up for lifeguard & CPR training. The Gardnerville Skatepark is the only recreational facility of its kind in the area, making it convenient to Minden’s skaters and bikers on the weekends.
Nearby, Lampe Park of Gardnerville is a highly active recreational area covering 32 acres. Lampe consists of three softball fields, two hardball fields, a soccer field, two volleyball courts, as well as two tennis courts. You’ll find the area busy on weekends around the many barbecue pits, picnic areas, and a playground. The upper-age teams of the Carson Valley Little League call Lampe Park’s fields their home fields.
The corner of Lampe Park has a Walgreens and Yogurt Beach in the parking lot at the intersection of U.S. Highway 395 and Waterloo Lane. Across the street, you’ll find a shopping center that includes Grocery Outlet Bargain Market, Smiths, Raley’s, Hunan Chinese, and Pho Chopstix. Less than a mile away on U.S. Highway 395 is a Walmart Supercenter near the Carson Valley Medical Center.
