Thank you for this great video. Question, what if your supervisor suggest that you stay for seasonal position vs. Full time after you decide to go? Would that still be considered a counter offer?
@jeffhsipepi5 жыл бұрын
Karla, thank you for your question, any offer to stay in any capacity, is a counter. Remember if you make the choice to leave, leave, because there are likely many reasons you made that decision. I hope this helps! Thanks!

I did accepted a counter offer many years ago (not even knowing that such term exists), and not much for the money but for a possibility to develop a product that market wanted and I believed could be created under my leadership in that specific company. And that did worked out, despite a need to crush few more of such kind of walls on my way. Do agree that if company pushes people to such methods, something is wrong in the company's culture or in the "leadership" team.

NordicForest, thanks for sharing. Yes, it speaks volumes that you only get what you want when you tell them you are leaving. This is a sign of poor direct leadership and or overall leadership. They should never offer you something when you have one foot out the door.

I still don’t understand. The company is ready to offer higher salary to a new candidate with the same experience. But can’t give enough raise to the same employee at the right time. I know we can ask for raise. But some things need to be considered without asking. I got more than a 60% hike with the switch. Whereas my raise for two years was in the lower half of the single digits.

I got a counter offer for a matched salary and title. At first I spoke with my direct manager and told him if they match salary and title I’ll stay cause I like the company and working with him. He got back to me and told they could only accept to increase the salary- not the title. After I gave my resignation letter, another pm knew abt me leaving, so him and two of other VP at the company talked with me and promised to fix the problems. .....When I asked for a raise 6months ago, they raised my salary to 40% of the amount I asked for........Now in the counteroffer they’ve accepted to give me 100% of same amount I asked 6months ago and also changed my title. On the other side, the new company has a good reputation in my field and while negotiating my compensation with them, they also told me they are paying me higher than the normal salary for my job in the field. It’s such a hard decision to make. Any opinions?
@jeffhsipepi4 жыл бұрын
Seyed, ultimately, only you can make this decision, but... They only gave you what you asked for when you said you were leaving, what does that tell you? Remember, it's cheaper for them to give you the increase than to interview, hire, and train somebody else. They are not looking out for YOUR best interests, they are looking out for their own. Remember the stats, 90% of people that accept the counter offer will leave the company within a year. If you really like this new company, now is the time to make a move! Good luck and thank you so much for your comment. It really frustrates me when employers only give you what you need when it is good for them! Let us all know what you decide!!

Jeff H Sipe thanks for ur ansr. the offers from both companies are now almost the same- but still my previous company‘a overall pay- in the new offer- is better. But you’re right; they didn’t recognize my value until I decided to go. What they say is that my manager didn’t communicate with higher managers well and that was the problem for them not accepting my request in the first place (they’re not happy with my current manager themselves). The other company is full of unknown opportunities & possibilities. I will let you know when I made my decision and also the result of that.
@jeffhsipepi4 жыл бұрын
@@seyedjavadmousavi2194 it sounds like you know what to do, but remember the stat, 90% of people that accept counter offers will be gone within one year, if you think this new opportunity is good, ask yourself, will this position be available when I want to leave again. Good luck!

Jeff H Sipe sooooo ...they got back to me again and offered even more 💰💰 overall they raised my salary for %14 and the result was my current job offered 5% more than the new job- but after talking with my managers I decided to ignore that more money and to go forward with the new job...this is the reason: So many people were getting involved in this matter and I felt it won’t look good on my reputation in the office. It felt like I’m the trouble maker and they are trying really hard to solve the issue in whatever way possible cause there is a deadline on the project. It looked like I’m taking benefit of the situation and not a team member they could trust any more.... it was a hard decision to make, I believe I did the right thing and I’m looking forward to my new job :)

@@seyedjavadmousavi2194 You definitely made the right decision, part of the challenge with accepting a counter offer is how you are perceived, by management, by your colleagues, etc. Congrats on making a good decision and best of luck to you!

I would like to see some videos that describe when you SHOULD accept a counter offer.
@jeffhsipepi Жыл бұрын
Oroborus, it is a very fair question. The reason why you see so many videos like mine is because the stats don't lie, 90% of people who accept a counter offer leave within a year. So, let's look at the 10%. If I am going to argue for accepting, the keys would be being on a great team, having a great manager, and seeing long term career progression in a company with a strong culture, good technology, etc. But the other item to consider is, not you, but others perception of you. Specifically, those in leadership, that is the part we cannot control.

Hello Thanks for the video, I need an advice here, I am having an offer from MNC tech. My current organisation is a small (1000 people) emerging Cloud Tech company. They are giving me a counter offer and I have been working here for the past 1 year and 3 months. The work environment is good and have a supportive boss. India's MNC tech - will have more challenge, work life balance will not be good Should I consider only brand value and move? or should I stay?
@jeffhsipepi Жыл бұрын
@sabarigirinathanm9838, the biggest question is why you were looking outside of your current organization to begin with? Was it just comp, was it about getting a bigger name on your resume, anything else? I have backed off of the never a little bit in the instances where you currently have a good boss, that is the most important item at any company. I just don't like that you had to get another offer for them to pay you appropriately. If you are really happy and like the work/boss, it is okay to stay, but if you have to get another competing offer just to get another pay bump/raise, this would concerning to me. Ultimately, it is up to you, but a good boss is very important!! This is where I focus my attention when people are making career decisions. Good luck!!

Why wouldn't you at least take their offer and then start looking for new jobs? I don't understand why you would turn down more money even if it's just for a couple months.
@jeffhsipepi Жыл бұрын
Matt, ok, let's assume that all you (I am just going to use "you" to make the comment easier) care about is compensation. You go get that competing and your current company gives you more money. You decided to stay because, hey, it's more money. But the future state isn't that predictable that another company will like your resume, you will crush the interviews, and get another offer. And now, while your making more money (and probably not that much more that what the other company offered you) your current employer may actively be looking to replace you. You were valuable enough to counter and keep, but they know you have one foot out the door. And if the stars don't align with another opportunity that pays more than what you are currently earning, that is a really tricky scenario. 90% of people that accept a counter offer are gone from that company within 1 year, and not always be choice. Now is that a fake stat, probably, it sounds too high, but whatever it is, it is likely a high percentage. Also, many companies don't take current compensation into account when presenting offers. So even if you were to land a new job, there is no guarantee it will pay more. I hope this explanation helps.

mystical phoenix, your company is offering a transfer, not a counter. So the better question is, do you like your position and company and would be happy besides having a toxic boss. If both of the answers to those questions are yes, it is worth considering. The better question is, if they are transferring you because they know this person is toxic and not doing anything about it other than moving you, what does this say about the organization?? Good luck!

What’s a counter offer??
@jeffhsipepi4 жыл бұрын
A counter offer in this case, is an offer made to you by your current employer when you have told them you are leaving for another job. Typically, you have made requests for higher compensation, more flexibility, etc. in the past without them doing anything. They are only making this offer to stop you from leaving and therefore my recommendation is to never accept one. I hope this helps!
