Thanks so much Jeff for all your help!! I just landed a job at Google and negotiated based on your advice. For anyone reads my review: I watched Jeff’s GCK and case and BQ videos over and over again, I did not interview for Cloud (which Jeff usually use as an example), actually the department I interviewed is far distant from Jeff’s examples. BUT - those videos still helped me the MOST. Literally, by simply mimicking Jeff’s calm and candid tune and logic thinking process/ framework is winning. I can’t thank Jeff enough for his free videos and help. Jeff’s interviewing attitude and his honesty in all the videos really taught me how to prep myself mentally and how to treat my interviewers from deep in heart. These thinking process are of tremendous help for all my BQ, not only for Google, but for other FANNG and my own daily communication at work. I have to say I started to use some of the techniques in communicating with my boss, and it’s of great great great help. Senior leaders immediately started to recognize my leadership and communication skills, and they started to offer me up-moving opportunities as they reward candidacy (look at Jeff’s eyes!) and a sincere growth mindset worker (again, that’s the core of Jeff’s videos). Also - I’ve bought paid TC negotiation service, they suggested almost the same as this video (perhaps with some more data from their private DB, for my case I later learnt I’ve already got a pretty good TC with Jeff’s video’s help, so the wiggle room is very small) My one last request forJeff would be - could you upload more videos of how to get promotion in Google (4 -5 -6) and how to demonstrate leaderships when you are an IC?

Hi Jeff! Thank you for being so active in the comments, it adds a level of engagement that makes it super easy to binge your videos :D I have been in team match for quite a while for Google and ended up accepting an offer from Microsoft in the interim and am due to start soon. Google has finally gotten to the point of matching me and some numbers. Due to a downlevel the total comp is only equal to the compensation I'm getting from my Microsoft offer (less salary but much more equity). Since I'd (most likely) be burning a bridge with MS, I'd realistically need at least double the equity portion to get to a TC I'm comfortable with to commit. Would it be ok to ask for triple the offered equity (should I set a higher anchor for the salary first or stick with just the equity)? Should I ask for even more? Thank you tremendously in advance!
@jeffhsipepi4 ай бұрын
@Chewibub, of course if Google is your desired company, role, and hiring manager, you have to burn the bridge! When you anchor, ask for more everything, base, equity, and ask for a sign on bonus as well. Asking for triple the equity of the initial offer is not too high! Keep us posted.

Hey Jeff, I want to thank for your fantastic videos! I recently went through a couple of interview processes with a tech company where I learned about their job bands and salary ranges. Although I was considered overqualified for the first two positions, I received an offer from the same company during the third process. However, their initial offer seemed like a lowball. The company is relatively mid-size, and they have only introduced leveling system. The hiring manager assured me not to worry about the leveling and instead focus on finding a compensation package that would make me happy. She even mentioned her excitement about the prospect of me joining their team, stating that it's challenging to find someone with my profile for this role. These comments made me believe I had some negotiating power, so I decided to prepare a counteroffer. Following your valuable advice, I conducted thorough research and discovered potential salary ranges. Setting my expectations high, I sent them an email with my counteroffer. They responded promptly, but the increase they offered was minimal, leaving a significant gap between my expectations and their improved offer. While they made it clear that it was their "best and last offer," stating that most compensation items were non-negotiable, they didn't mention anything about the base salary. I found this minimal improvement quite puzzling. Upon reading their response, to be honest, I instantly began regretting setting the anchor so high. I also feel somewhat foolish! thinking they might believe I was solely motivated by a high salary especially if I eventually accept their lower offer. Throughout the process, I've maintained a high level of professionalism and courtesy, and I don't want them to perceive me as someone solely interested in a big paycheck. I assume, their minimal increase they offered only reinforces this concern. Although I genuinely want the job, I'm currently not feeling happy about the situation. I've lost some of my initial excitement and worry that they may have already formed a negative judgment about me. What are your thoughts on the situation? Do you have any suggestions on how to proceed and resolve this? I know for fact that the Decision Makers for Comp. are the Comp Manager + Hiring manager? Would it be too bad to ask to have a chat with the hiring manager and in the chat showing my interest in joining her team and asking if they can meet me in the middle? What would you suggest?
@jeffhsipepi Жыл бұрын
bcnboys9471, any company that has a negative impression of you because you ask for what you deserve is not a company you want to work for, but they didn't say that and I don't want you think that is how they feel. Negotiating with the hiring manager is tricky, you need to tread lightly because depending on the company, this may not be seen as a positive step. If it is a small tech company, you likely have more flexibility to chat with the hiring manager, as opposed to a big company where typically, this is more frowned upon. You can also have a really candid conversation with the Recruiter and say, I am really excited about the role and company. The compensation is a little below expectations, is there any recommendation/suggestion you can share with me that might help me raise this number? Lastly, for all future negotiations, negotiate over the phone, not over email, you have more power that way!

Jeff, your channel has been INCREDIBLY helpful throughout the interview process. You mention in the video shooting high knowing they’ll meet you in the middle. How high should you shoot that’s still “reasonable?” 10%, 20%, 30% over your target or would you recommend another strategy? Thanks again for the great content!
@jeffhsipepi4 жыл бұрын
Alex, it is a great question! There are a number of factors to take into consideration including their needs, your current comp, competing offers, how comfortable you are negotiating, how much data have you provided them, do you live in a country or state where they can directly ask what you are currently making. Ok, I am avoiding the question, I like to be more on the aggressive side, but that is me. If you want a 10% increase in total comp, I would shoot for at least 20% in your ask with the assumption they will meet you in the middle. Unfortunately, there is no magic number, it is an awesome question. I hope this long-winded answer helps!

Thanks for the great stuff Jeff, as always! In google, usually who is the decision maker? Comp Team or Hiring Manager? Another questions- if all of your 4interviews went good. And recruiter mentioned L4 earlier regarding that tech role. How we can negotiate for L5?
@jeffhsipepi2 жыл бұрын
Shahid Riaz, typically, the final decision maker is either Hiring Committee (HC) or the Offer Review team, if HC is not required for that specific role. If all your interviews go well, there is always a chance for an up-level. But it is not a negotiation, it is a conversation. If you find out you were approved for L4, simply ask your Recruiter, is there a chance for up-level. Sometimes, there is, but you may have to conduct an additional interview or two.

This was super helpful Jeff - Appreciate your insight. Q for you - Let's say you offered out a range in the initial interview and then were told that the bottom part of the range was what the role was paying. After doing further research the range within the market was about 10-15% more than what you initially offered out. Do you think it would be appropriate to adjust the range (once you have been offered the job and are in nego)? And how would you go about it?

Hi Jeff. I've really appreciated your content as I prepared for this stage of the process. I'm realizing that there's a ton of great advice in the comments as well. I once had a recruiter tell me that at some point in the process, they would ask for 3 compensation numbers from me: 1) My happy number, 2) My shoot for the moon number, 3) My walk away number. Would you ever give these numbers? If not, how would you decline in a gracious way? The recruiter said that they were my advocate in the negotiation process and wanted to get the best deal for me, and they need these numbers to do it.

All your videos have been super helpful, Jeff. I have a hiring manager conversation with Google coming up, and if that goes well an offer should be incoming (fingers crossed). Two questions: (1) Do you have a Google-specific video like this? I imagine a lot of these are fairly standard at Google (PTO, etc) and you'd have that insight. I've searched around but have not found a Google-specific vid (2) The JD mentioned a 'minimum base salary'. The recruiter asked how I felt about comp early in the process and I said that the numbers mentioned were okay as a starting point for us to have a conversation on later. I didn't want to rule myself out early, but I fear I've locked myself into those lower numbers. I meet all the qualifications and more; should I expect that minimum number to be offered? What can I do before the offer comes through to make sure they offer something higher? THANK YOU!

ZDR, good luck with the hiring manager! Watch this video to learn about Google Comp - kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z5icgZWvfKx8iKs. And you did a good job with the comp conversation. I am finding this hard to believe because if company is doing so, whoever accept the lowball offer and work there will have very high chance of leaving later. I believe that company will reduce number of hiring but should not lowball any offer just because candidates are more desperate right now.
@jeffhsipepiАй бұрын
@Will-bx2wz, in general, I have not found this to be true. Remember there is something called "internal equity" refers to the practice of ensuring employees within the same role and level receive equal pay for their work. So all of sudden paying new employees less than the existing employees would create some real challenges for any organization. Negotiate!

Pallavi, ok, wow, great question! Obviously, this is a very personal choice, but I always feel more comfortable with an offer in hand before disclosing anything. Many may disagree that this is dishonest, but there is already so much bias against women in the workplace that I feel like you need to protect yourself. Is this ideal, absolutely not, are they going to be unhappy that you did not disclose this information, probably. So I would ask you seek-out additional opinions on this item. I did have this happen while I was at Google early on in my career, we hired a woman that was close to her due date. It was not ideal for the business, but it was the right thing to do. Obviously, this is when we were conducting onsite interviews so her pregnancy did not need to be stated. Keep us updated on your decision and thanks again for sharing!
