This method works really good for fighting bass out from underneath boat docks when they were first hooked and really green and try to run under the boat

I’m a beginner to bass fishing ( been doing it a couple years now) and I ALWAYS wonder about my drag set up because I just don’t know the money spot! Thanks for this one Randy 🎣

I caught a 50 inch muskie on a crankbait and used the thumb because he kept surging. Drag set med tight to wench him but thumbed it when he got near the surface and made those fast runs.. Grew up fishing old Mitchell 300 spinning reels with the reverse free spool on so that helped me learn.

I have learned to adjust as I go in regards to the actual drag and I have always had good luck but I have never seen this method used before, will have to give this a go and the way that you demonstrated this make sense to me!! Great stuff Randy and thanks for these tips!!

There has been times where I have used my thumb bar on a big fish so my line would not pop , but I’ve also used my thumb to put more pressure if my drag was too loose , to help keep more pressure on the fish , good one thanks for the advice

Never been able to get used to it on a spinning reel but this is the method I use on all my baitcasters. Lock the drag all the way and thumb them when needed.

If you fish cheap reels with poor drags, then by all means use the thumb bar. If you use high-end reels with good drag washers like Shimano, let the drag do its job. A high quality drag system is smoother and more consistent than your thumb will ever be.

That thumb bar method honestly comes naturally 😅 I wouldn’t say it’s a skill but I don’t think I’ve ever loss a fish doing it too.

Outstanding video. Press the thumb bar and fight em manually. It's the way it's should be done. I learned how to do it fly fishing we call it palming the reel as you use your palm and transfered that knowledge to fishing a baitcaster.

Randy, here is a studio hack from my days as a musician and audio engineer. Cheap moving blankets from Harbor Freight on solid surfaces, such as concrete, also can use tarp tie down clips hung from ceiling. Creating sort of a cup around your mic. I don't know how you shoot, equipment wise. It eliminates reflective noise and bounce back from hard surfaces. Have a great day! BTW, you haven't seen me much lately due to tearing my bicep and tendon in my right arm. No more casting for 2024, super bummed about that.

How do u reel the fish in if they are strong enough to run your drag?

I've never used the drag system on baitcasting reels, I'll only use the thumb bar if needed. The only thing I do to the drag is to crank the drag star down as tight as I can get it, and no the line will not break, never has yet, since I'm mostly using 14-20 lb test line and also because most 'freshwater' baitcasting reels that most Bass anglers use do not have a drag systems powerful enough that will hold the line / spool tight enough to actually break off 20+ lb line... I use 20lb test on most of my reels most the time since the lakes and ponds I fish are stained with no more than 12" visibility most of the time. Also, depending on the type of lure and it's weight along with hook size will determine how hard to set the hook... Like Randy said, "Bass will hook themselves sometimes only when using the right size hook(s)", and that's so very true indeed when using the right type of lure and the types and sizes of hooks that are being used...That's if you have the experience to know how much pressure is needed to setting the hook(s) along with where and when you're fishing. Thanks Randy! Btw.. I can't wait to check out your new YT channel.

I do this and it works well. Set the drag for the style of fishing your doing. When Setting the hook the drag should be able come out just a touch. No thumb needed. A big fish Will light up your thumb. 🔥 ✋ Big Big Fish will tear themselves apart to get the hooks out. I learned this trolling for striper the hard way. We hook up on bass all the time by accident. If the drag can’t come out the fish will tear it face off to get away. We punch fish in the California delta…not me to much. I know you have to bring in lump of weeds with your big bass. Your drag is the most important part to landing big fish. I’m no pro Randy. I had nice fish get away and learned. Yes Sir. I’m into fishing. I did say I’ve learned plenty from you and will continue. Well I did now.

Why wouldn't you just set your drag a little loose and use your thumb on the spool when you set the hook or the fish runs? Your technique works for bass, but what about fish that run long distances? I'm not saying you're wrong but I'd like to see you fight jacks or cobia or something that goes far and fast with those techniques. Your thumb is going to be blistered I think. I like a light drag on any reel and I add pressure with a finger or thumb. I learned catching snook and redfish with 6 lb test mono, and caught a cobia that way too after an hour and a half. I don't think I could back reel fast enough to cover the runs.

Yeah. Definitely “advanced” skill. Using your thumb bar also risks creating a backlash if you don’t do it right. Takes some time to understand thumb bar drag
