One of the things that you might not catch if you watched One Piece long after it was aired is the 3D2Y tattoo... it truly took 2 REAL LIFE YEARS before we got to see the whole crew again. That was just fantastic and it's something that's usually lost to people who come to One Piece long after it was first aired.

"I still have my crew!" was THE best moment for me. After my brother passed away from covid I was neck-deep in depression. So I rewatched the things we liked watching together, and when I got to this part I just cried my ass off, for a day. But not of sadness. It reminded me of the guilt of not doing more things with him, how for a time I felt without a reason to live, and how my friends and family supported me non-stop. Personal bias, yes, but the way this moment perfectly summed up how it is to loose someone saved my life.

And they barely beat Moria at that. If not for Lola and her crew giving Luffy all those shadows, I doubt they would have been able to take down Oars and Moria. Even at that they still had a hell of a time taking out Moria and came so close to death.

On top of Oda setting the expectations that he doesn't kill off characters, I think Ace is a special case. You talk about authors looking at major character deaths as a possible "wasted potential" but that doesn't apply to Ace because he has had far more screen time post death than he ever did alive. We have gotten to understand Ace as a character better than most others all after he was killed, so Oda got to have his cake and eat it too.

Honestly, I think one of the reasons why Oda made Kuma ask the vacation question prior to making Zoro disappear is because it was suppose to be a clue for one piece fans. Back in Thriller Bark Kuma asked Perona the same question before she disappeared. So for some readers they see it as an odd question and for other readers they will be thinking… “Oh no…”

Another aspect of Sabaody that really contributed to the subversion of expectations is that we knew Fishman Island would be next. Bare in mind that Fishman Island was the first island in the Grand Line to be name dropped all the way back in East Blue. It was right up there with Elbaf and Wano as one of the most anticipated islands by the fanbase. The fact that we were FINALLY about to reach Fishman Island made the possibility for setback or delay seem virtually impossible. This is probably lost on anyone who wasn't following weekly but the hype surrounding namedropped islands was huge.

I started reading One piece in 2007, I caught up to weekly chapters in 2008 towards the end of Thriller Bark. Reading this as it was coming out was definitely a weird experience. My expectation was that the supernova who where introduced would be shown being defeated and or captured. Since there where on the same level as the strawhats they would be shown as sacrifical lambs, then strawhats meeting back up in 3 days. The confusion and disbelief this caused in the community is an experince I can relive thanks to youtubers picking up the series and getting to this point. Thanks for the video

I got into the manga just before this arc started all those years ago and to this day, i still remember how i felt reading this. Sabaody was such an exciting arc. Meeting the supernovas and rayleigh, the reintroduction of hachi, the bright vibes of the archipelagh, and that one incredibly satisfying punch. And then it all came crashing down and it HURT. The arc was written nearly 15 years ago but it's still imbedded in my brain as one of the absolute best.

The Sabaody arc destroyed the ability to take victory for granted in any arc that came after it. Marineford drove that home even further where there were no happy endings. Among other things, that raised the tension at Dressrosa.

If you’re a fan of a good reunion then I would suggest the anime ‘kids on the slope’. It’s significantly shorter, maybe just one of those 12 episode ones but the ending is so bittersweet to me it makes me tear up whenever I see it. But since it’s so short it seems like there’s a lot of missed potential for the story and it kind of feels like pieces are missing but I still love it. It’s mainly about this group of 3 who find a common interest in jazz music and end up becoming really close. It’s a simple one but it got me into jazz music which led to a domino effect that ended up changing my whole outlook on life, just like one piece.

Something i think is overlooked is that the pacafistas were specifically set up to be a "big threat for later", it felt like they were going to have massive ramifications on the story, they were hyped up so hard, which added to the idea of the straw hats escaping, and then later having to contend with the pacafistas. And then, kuma booped them.

He was awesome) but man that was such an emotional scene.

Sabaody Archipalego will probably always be my favorite arc of One Piece, and that is because the main characters do the morally right thing, and it is very satisfying, but its results are also almost completely disastrous for everyone involved. It is also the moment that most profoundly establishes the power structure that the World Government and the marines exist to defend, how much we want to see it crumble to the ground, and how helpless the Straw Hats are against its overwhelming force. As much as I love Marineford and Eines Lobby, I don't think any of them did as much to define or call into questions the core ethos of the series as Sabaody.

Ironic that egghead is being setup similar to sabaody. now I know the outcome will not be the same or close to it since oda already announced the final saga, but its the same exact circumstances, in fact the strawhats are in a bigger problem on egghead. Within half a year, the celestial dragon introduced was killed, that one REALLY caring marine from Enies Lobby was killed, one of Vegapunk's satelites... And now we're at Hachinosu, watching a recreation of marineford with Koby and Garp that can't end without a character death. *EDIT* There's also Kidd who might have died (for the narrative, I hope he did sorry Kidd fans)

And this arc until the post marineford arc/back to sabaody made me cry, laugh, and dream again after crushing defeats that i went through in those times. This saga just showed how rich Luffy as a main character than the previous arcs. And the reunion after his backstory is overwhelming. Plus FIGHT TOGETHER as opening soundtrack makes each episode that feeling of hope despite the heaviness of the storyline. Best arc in all manga and anime for me personally. I still remember being there when the chapter where the Straw Hats were seperated dropped. At the end I was just sat there staring at the screen because... what had I just read? This was the *Straw Hat Pirates* how did they get wiped out so easily? It was horrifying! Of course now we have a wider context but at the time it was (and probably still is) completely jaw-dropping. Then when they finally reunited two years later I think I was actually yelling with joy in my little uni student room. Good times. Catharsis is definitely the right word. And I also really like your use of "we" throughout the video instead of "Straw Hats". One of the things I like the most is how easy it is to feel like you're actually on the journey with Luffy and his crew, so that was a really cool way of communicating that.

I'm with you. Sabaody Arc is the best arc in One Piece. So much meaningful stuff happens in just a few chapters. You made me get emotional with this video 😂😂😢 By the way, until the end of the first Sabaody arc I was watching the anime. After the strawhats disappeared I started reading the manga. I wasn't waiting a week to know what the hell had happened 😂😂😂 So thank you Oda for making such a great cliffhanger that forced me to start reading your masterpiece. That made me follow Marineford in a week to week basis and I will never forget that experience.

I loved that you brought up when Luffy punched a celestial dragon so hard it put him back in a Manga panel. There were a few times when Gear 5 Luffy his Kaido so hard the animation changed genres and mediums… one went to like fresco painting. But I was like damn that’s a fourth wall break if I saw one! But it makes sense with Luffy’s NikaNika Nomi power set I think. And seeing that power manifest when he hit the Celestial Dragon makes so much sense now- it was like epic Foreshadowing by Goda. Brilliant observation bro!

I started one piece only knowing about luffy fighting a shark and leapord before starting thinking it was a goofy but cool shonen., But after brooks backstory already had me in tears watching sabaody left me with falling tears in almost an hour strait due to the unexpected truck of defeat and emotions left me struck for 3 episodes strait.

Manga spoilers up to chapter 1088 No shot Sabo is dying imo. In my mind, he's clearly meant to signify the next generation from the Dragon/revolutionary angle, just like Luffy is Roger/pirates and just like Koby is Garp/marines, so all three are absolutely safe imo. That said, I do absolutely think we'll have a death of an ally/friend on our hands to spark the final final conflict (Garp's looking like the prime suspect right now).

As much as epic the episodes where the heroes win are , so do the ones they lose.405 is a legendary episode and anyone that had previously been calling the Navy useless , the invasion of Sabaody has never left their mind......

thank you mr.! Sabaody is till this day my favorite arc. It was the first time that we realized how small and harmless our protagonist were against much more terrifying enemies in their world.

I got back into One Piece just before Water 7/Enies Lobby arc trying to get to the introduction of Boa Hancock, the namesake of one of my best friends' main character in MapleStory. With that goal in mind of, "why did this character make such an impact on her to name her character," I. Absolutely. Was not ready for the emotional roller coaster that summer I watched One Piece up to Fishman Island. It was like the Raikage catching me a lariat any time I forgot about the last time.

Oda and his editors have been consistent on the progress of One Piece during officially confirmed interviews. We were at 80% at the beginning of Wano so we can assume it's at least 85% if not 90% done at the moment. The manga is in the current final saga.

Oda laughs when people ask him when the series will end.Wano was that long and yet not many mysteries were unfolded.Tge Yonko saga started with Zou in 2015 and ended in 2022.Assuming that the Final Saga wilk either be as long as the Yonko saga or bigger with all the mysteries that have yet to unfold , One Piece is not ending at least before 2030.Oda laughed the same way when people asked him when will the manga end after the end of Dressrosa. It's just that big , he doesn't care anymore.

The thing about Marineford isnt that Luffy lost, its that his win didnt matter. He broke into and out of Impel down, he got to Marieford and got Ace out of his cuffs. They won. They could leave, but then Ace dies and Luffy couldnt do anything. I dont think it was a lesson Luffy had to learn here, because there wasnt any other choice of what he could do. It was just another example of luffy not being able to do anything.

For me Sabaody is something special, I knew about it as a kid but didn't really watch it that much. When I got older I decided to watch One piece after bleach was discontinued and I caught up to Naruto. I didn't know how many episodes were there and when I went to watch I wasn't looking at what episode I was in I just hit the next episode button and kept on going. When Kuma started to do his thing I honestly thought they were getting executed for a moment until Luffy got hit. So I actually was getting emotional seeing these guys get sent off to different Island.
