Never Been in a Team Before - Full Novice Four in Hand (Part 1)

In this video, we're putting together a team of horses that have only been driving a short amount of time and have never been in a team before.
You could call it a 'class field trip', without the schoolmaster!

You are a brave man taking a load of teenagers out on a charabanc! That little one in the front left is like a fart in a trance, no clue what a straight line is. Well done for getting home safe and not ending upside down in a ditch with a carrot on your head. Pure delight to watch with the anticipation of chaos at any moment, but as always, you, horses and us watching, all in your safe capable hands, arrive home safely. When I see Barry driving a Four in Hand team I always think of the grand Georgian/Regency days of horse drawn carriages etc. and wonder at the skill of the Royal Mail Stagecoach drivers, and hired public coaches, with drivers wearing their caped Greatcoats. I imagine the hustle and bustle of pulling into a Coaching Inn for a change of team and to give the passengers a break. Watching Barry work a team really puts into perspective just how skilled these men were and why they were feted by their peers.

It’s all about the ground work and lead up to this point, as you say, Barry. I love that you don’t anthropomorphize them, assigning them ‘agendas’ and saying they have ‘plans’ to upset their humans! Your knowledge of driving and connection with horses and attention to what they need is such a skill built over a lifetime, and that you share it is a gift!

Your videos came across my feed about a year or so ago. I enjoy watching them so much. I used to ride every day but then I had a bad accident and it took quite some time to recover. I gained weight and my horse aged. She had sustained bad injuries. We healed, we aged, her better than I. I didn't ride anymore after that. I've often toyed with the idea of driving. You make it look like it's such a wonderful experience. I admire your courage and appreciate your knowledge. In my younger years, I wish I had been able to learn from someone with your patience and skill. You are one of a very few left of a dying breed of horseman. I wish I could study under you. I miss interacting with horses, but at the same time, I have to admit, I'm scared. Keep up the awesome videos! Maybe one day I can change my situation and learn to drive too.

Enjoyed the drive and your explanation of groundwork makes it possible and then experience, as recognizing a road is a road, adds to it. Nice reasons behind it, as socialization, teamwork, etc.

I met you in Cochrane Alberta. I was with a lady who had a team of donkeys. I loved your salt of the earth Character. You told a bit of your growing up, time spent with a traveling man… Please, document and have written your personal history. I would happily pay 50$ USD to read about your young life in your words. Better yet, an audio book and listen to your unique voice and expression. I am really certain that I’m not the only person who would make your effort worthwhile. You’re as important to driving as any superstar that we read about. No not in a sporty way like an Olympian. A real life practical and useful way. The only way that matters. He is worth his weight in gold! But this was a 'class field trip without the teacher' haha In previous years we would use George our pony schoolmaster out the front of a team. You can see her at work (bay pony) in other team videos.

I would love to see what Barry could do with a horse on another channel called Farouk. This horse seriously needs Barry’s calm and safe training to regain confidence.

Farouk's owner does not do him any favors with her training methods. That poor horse needs a more quiet and patient trainer.

If you mean the Farouk I think you mean, he is an ex Arabian showing horse when was younger. That world really screws their heads up! I had a lovely Arabian for while from that background, it left him extremely nervous and reactive. That type of showing needs banning.

One thing I do now is keep a neck collar on my ponies. Don't need it often but comes in handy every now and then

Do insurance companies still work with you or guardian angels? There can't be many serious accidents that have happened to you, otherwise you wouldn't exist there anymore. So it is possible, but only for very few. ---
