CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Josie (Drew Barrymore) is relieved, but emotional, when she finally reveals herself as an undercover reporter to her classmates at prom.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Many people wish they could go back to high school, knowing what they know as an adult; Josie Geller gets the chance to do just that in the comedy Never Been Kissed. Josie (played by Drew Barrymore) is a 25-year-old copy editor at a newspaper in Chicago. But it's her youthful looks as much as her journalistic skills that finally win her a writing assignment: she's ordered to enroll in high school posing as a teenager for a story on the state of America's youth. Trouble is, Josie was a hopeless nerd in high school (called "Josie Grossie" by her classmates); she had no idea of how to fit in with the cool kids, and she's hardly gotten any better at it in the seven years since graduation. While Josie makes fast friends with a bookish girl named Aldys (Leelee Sobieski), and also takes notice of her good-looking English teacher Mr. Coulson (Michael Vartan), she realizes for the sake of her story she has to infiltrate the cool girls' clique, which will be impossible without someone to give her a crash course in hipness. Josie's brother Rob (David Arquette), obviously the more style-conscious sibling, offers to sign up for the same school to act as the cool-guy friend she'll need to fit in, but just when Josie starts making headway (and starts enjoying high school for a change), her editor changes the focus of the story -- he now wants a feature on improper relations between teachers and students, which will not be good for her deepening friendship with Mr. Coulson. Never Been Kissed also features supporting performances from John C. Reilly, Molly Shannon and Jordan Ladd (the latter in a much more wholesome vehicle than her last cinematic visit to cinematic teen-town, Gregg Araki's Nowhere).

The flashback of Josie spinning on her prom night gets me emotional. Josie became someone who saved a teenage girl from being tormented in a way she wished someone did for her back in high school. Josie has always been one of my favorite movie characters.

Ai Yang Edwin Tan it shatters my heart too. Not to get too deep, but I think we oftentimes remember ourselves in these past moments, usually from childhood, with embarrassment and hate. We hate that we were victims of not being cool enough, pretty enough, smart enough to be accepted. We hate the situation and we hate ourselves for being the loser that wasn’t worthy. We want to distance ourselves from that as much as possible. But a scene like this one should remind us that we need to be kind and compassionate to our inner child. Our inner child that just wanted to be loved, accepted, have our dreams come true, like going to prom with the coolest guy in school. Our inner inner child is pure and innocent. But it gets hurt by these experiences. It doesn’t deserve anger and ridicule by us, it needs healing and love. I think it’s worth noting that although Josie’s first prom night was a horrific experience, it didn’t stop her from intervening when the Lemmings were going to try to ruin Aldys’ prom night. Even though she would’ve been fine this time around, winning Prom Queen and having her popular boyfriend. In my opinion it’s her honoring her inner child, and doing what she wished someone would’ve done for her. That’s what you call growth. But yea this scene also gives me goosebumps because it’s such a perfect depiction of the cruelty and meanness kids can have in school.

As someone who didn’t fit in when I was in high school, everything Josie said was true. I’m 33 now and going on 34 next month. And even though I was an outcast in high school, I am now completely independent with a college degree, have a job, and am financially stable and independent. On top of that, someone I knew who picked on me and who was popular in high school is now struggling, did not go to college, and is still living off his parents to get by. And he is the same age as me. Not throwing shade at anyone, but Josie is completely right. Whoever you were in high school means nothing once you are a grown up. You can be the most popular student in high school and none of it would matter once you are an adult in the real world.

If you peaked in high school, you’re a loser. That being said, I wish everyone peace, contentment, and happiness. We all said and did things in our teenage years that we regret and cringe at. I was teased and alienated every now and then from my preteen years all the way through my early 20s, but reflecting back on those experiences as a now-32-year-old, it doesn’t bother me. It’s because of those experiences that made me realize that my calling in life is to give voice to those in need.

Think he'll ever realise it himself, that he likes her? And if he did would he act on it? And if he did act on it would she forgive him or say something along the lines of 'Yeah well you should've thought of that before you took part in a plan to dump dog food on my head. I did like you, but you missed your chance because now I can't trust you." If she did end up forgiving him what do you think he'd have to do to earn it - some people are ok with a simple sorry and an admission that what they did or was planning on doing was messed up, others want more proof than words.

No, those lines aren’t important to the scene or movie. You need to learn more about storytelling to understand that. 0:49 Josie's boiling point is exactly what I dealt with all of my High School years. For the most part, most Teens in high school often represent the WORST in us as a Species. Once the real world hits them after High School, they become lost because they forgot how to be human while they were children and no one wants to try to teach them how to be human again. You CANNOT reason with most high school teens. You CANNOT bargain with them. They often have no empathy, no compassion, no mercy, no ability to forgive and have almost no civility left. Most of them are lost causes by the time they reach 16 - 17. The only way to deal with people that choose to be horrible in nature because it is fun and their only identity... is to not talk to them. Ignore them no matter what they do or do to you. Anything you say to them is ammunition to use against you. Often, when teens in High School said, "Shut up!" to me, I did. Then, time went by and they asked, "Why aren't you talking to me?" I said, "Because you told me not to." They replied back with, "Shut up!" The only way to end the cycle was to give them an answer they had no counter for. When teens in High School told me, "Shut up!", my answer was "Your wish is granted." Now, they couldn't do anything. They were stuck because I used their words to find a way out. When I gave them my answer, they realized that they had released me of providing any reason to respond to them. The ONLY way to stop a monster is to give them nothing to use and make themselves look foolish in front of others.

Because everyone fought. Everyone. Try to pick on the kid who reads Star Wars comics and you’ll get socked in the face. This type of torment just never happened. Whenever I show stuff like this to people I grew up with, they always yell at the screen “OMG JUST PUNCH HER!” because that’s what we did 😂😂

Ok what bothers me is later on she says she was 17 when she was pranked by billy. This movie is set in 1999. Wouldn’t she have been 17 in 1991? But her flashbacks are in the eighties and oh no I’ve gone cross eyed 😵

i always wondered if Guy was in on it or not. He isn't shown getting a "comeuppance" like the girls are, and he had seemed to have growth from being around Josie.
@agenttheater5
@agenttheater5 7 ай бұрын
Ok , I still say Guy did actually kind of like Aldys. Not that he'd admit it to anyone and definitely not to himself, but even though I know that it was mostly just acting on his part a bit of me still thought that he seemed to actually enjoy dancing with her. I mean she has brains, nice eyes, clear skin, good hair. But he'd never admit to any of that because she's been classified as the science geek and he's classified as the king of cool. But it could explain why he seemed at times to go out of his way to tease her - he was the only one at the 'court' to come over to her car. That aside, the scene at the 'court' showed how insecure he really was - when Aldys drove away he was all 'yeah' like he was acting cool and confident like 'yeah, that's what I said'. His act was weak then. All in all it makes me wish that they'd kept a scene from the earlier version of the script, when she goes to see the coach after she gets exposed. In it she bumps into Guy and Guy calls her "Ms Geller' and asks her about how he'd apply for an internship at the newspaper because his mum keeps asking him about his plans for after high school, and it's basically their first meeting reversed because now she's the confident one and he's the nervous one (right down to dropping something in front of her) and we're reminded of what Josie realised when they were dancing together and she said that she was thinking about a quote from Shakespeare while he said he was thinking about his sword - the realisation that for all his apparent confidence, he's still 17. Ends with her assuring him 'you're going to be ok'.

This was a good prom scene - only issue I have was that I wouldn't have gotten Rosalind and Orlando from the costumes. Remembering that Rosalind spent most of the play dressed as a man and she and Orlando both spent most of their time in a forest because they have no where else to go would've thought looking a bit more casual and rustic would be a good idea (maybe having pants and a skirt on at the same time would've worked for Rosalind costume).

If you're referring to, the girl in the blue body suit, then yes, GUY definitely had a part in it. You can tell from how he was treating her in the beginning. As for the teacher, he had no idea what was about to go down. It's definitely a well made movie with great meaning.

I always feel so sad watching this part and seeing her reveal her real identity - I feel like she could've just made a cool speech still keeping her cover and Rob's cover and kept at the story and none of the issues would've came out yet lol she could've just been that "high school student" who bridged that gap between bully and nerd and showed them they were idiots However this movie is still awesome and I can also see why they had it play out like this - there's always the part where the protagonist is at her lowest point until finally she finds a resolution

The trouble with watching any version of 'One Piece' is that you hear Mihawk talking to Zoro in scenes like this whenever you see popular people or cliques in high school and the apparent awe and celebrity about them - you hear Mihawk saying "Frog in the well - know how big the world is". Though at times like 0:13, 0:19 and 0:24 when the 'popular' kids are all together I almost prefer the line from the live action version "You're like a little frog croaking in the well. Croak, croak, croak." Because then I find myself imagining saying to each of them to their faces "croak, croak, croak" as in "that's all you're doing. That's all you are." I admit though, that sounds a little cruel.

Pauly W The romantic in me wants to say that he was serious about the dance and liked her. But you don't really see his reaction to the dog food, however the look he gives Aldys after Josie says that she is twenty five gives me some hope!

I think he really liked her. Look at how he looks into her eyes when she dances with him. The others could not stand to see how beautiful this girl was and free to be herself. He was genuine I think and how they dance together is my favourite part of the movie. He may have started off being in on it but after seeing how beautiful she was dancing, he was so captured by that, he was not thinking of anything else, (in my opinion).
