I have a Laptop for mobility Reasons because it fits in my Backpack. It's an old Dell which came with a 160 GB Harddrive with Windows 10 on it. It replaced another Dell which died because of the Environment. After putting the 1 TB Harddrive, the 8 GB of Ram and the WLAN-AC Module from the old Machine into the new One the Performance was right for me. It also has an UMTS WWAN Module which i use with a prepaid Card. Some People store all their Data on a Laptop ? Hard to belive because a 4 TB 2.5 Inch Harddisk wont fit into any Laptop i've known. Last Summer my 4 TB Harddisk in my Lanparty Minitower was full so i installed another one. Luckily some Data is stored on another stationary PC in a Bigtower. So it's good to have multiple Machines for multiple Purposes.

smellcaster. most people don't need that much storage. 250GB is enough for most people. other people expand their storage with an external drive or the cloud. and there are laptops with enough storage. i could fit 3 2.5 inch drives + 1 m.2 ssd in my notebook. there are 5 TB 2.5 inch hard drives. i think 15 TB + a 2 TB ssd should be enough for almost all people.

Another alternative to buying an entry-level 300 quid laptop would be to buy used Thinkpad laptop with non-ultra-low voltage Intel processor (processors without ULV or U after their model number). I got my T440p for about £270 one year ago. It's got enough power and portability, you can use the rest of the 600 quid to get a good SSD or other accessories like a screen. The keyboard is great to type so it's super convenient to write assignments at home when connected to the screen or on the train or whenever, outside. You raise very good points in your video and interesting alternatives but I think this one is really good too. You can even buy these older Thinkpads for 100 quid with Core 2 Duo processors, put ssd and get something else with the money you've saved. What do you think?

OMG I was going to buy a laptop but I saw your video and did not buy one! The flight attendant looked at me really strangely when I pulled my desktop, monitor, keyboard and mouse out of my bag and asked for a spot to plug in my power bar to boot up my system. Almost did not get through airport check in either but convinced them all would be ok. Taxi driver let me use his lighter plug to plug in my inverter but did not get booted up in time because we got to the airport hotel in about 5 minutes. Lucky for me the train had 120 Volt plug ins but I could not use WiFi because my desktop has no WiFi module. Must get WiFi card for desktop next. When I reached the port and arrived to pickup my sailboat rental for the week I was surprised to discover that the sailboat did not have a 120 Volt AC outlet for my desktop :( In addition my hotel only had WiFi no direct internet network cable plug ins and no dialup available :( Was unable to check my emails on vacation so had to use the fax/data modem to send a fax to my travel agent for a change to my itinerary. Desktop instead of laptop - BEST DECISION EVER! NOT! xD

I have switched to SSD on desk and laptop a couple of years ago. Reliability and speed are great. Why bother with a regular hard drive, as it no longer makes sense. Today external drives and cloud services can expand SSD capacity and back up. Laptops are heavy. Smart phones will someday replace computers completely. I prefer mouse to touch. I now can travel with a small mouse, foldable keyboard, and low-end but light-weight digital pad. Sometimes I connect my 64gig smart phone that has a 128gig card and their is the cloud as well. Working on the road or watching movies on a plane are no problem without a bulky and heavy laptop. I really appreciate this presentation.

To save myself from suffering through 20 minutes and saving anyone else this simple analogy will be the best way for those less savvy i comparing an HDD vs SSD. Its really quite simple the issue with an HDD as my learned colleague is explaining is potential fro breakage much like an automatic watch when dropped too many moving parts. Whereas, an SSD is like a quartz watch basically pretty much bomb proof when dropped that is to say you should drop your laptop or watch out a window, but that an SSD has no moving parts. Manual wind and automatic watches have built in shock absorption to help protect it from bumps and yet it is fairly delicate a quartz or SSD is far more solidly built. Buy a laptop just buy an SSD think Star Trek and Warp drive and your life will be never the same. Buy a laptop with 8gb RAM and even a small 128gb SSD use a backup drive to save folders and your laptop journey will be supremely better. Saved you 15 minutes of being lulled to sleep.

Great advice. I and my son built him a nice gaming desktop for 400 U.S. dollars. My laptop crapped out on me so I will be building myself one and throwing Windows and Linux on it. You get so much more for your money by using the desktop and by doing it yourself. If you have a little patience and wait for sales on the different parts you can really get yourself a great computer.

Get a dumb terminal with Linux and SSH into the Windows desktop. That'll be just as fast as a VMware emulation in Windows. In fact go whole hog and PXE boot the terminal. That'd give you plenty of time to panhandle for parts. Might even be able to dissect the old laptop for eBay scavengers.

Very well done! Back in the mid-80's, when 10 Megabyte Drives were just giving way to the 20 Megabyte versions, I actually built (or had built for me) the gray-box towers using top components of the day. They were JUST good enough for my PhD math dissertation, and cost only $1500 complete with 8-pin dot matrix printer from Epson, an up-and-coming printer company, and a specialized math font software document preparation program (pre-PC Tex, pre-Word for Windows). Etc, etc....Those learning experiences were crucial for me, as I was in my mid-30's and needed to stay on top of the business PC universe in my follow-on employment in academia. After watching my latest $600 laptop (with SSD, yes!) develop some crazy noise problems, I've begun thinking about returning to a homebrew product. Your well-constructed arguments in this video inspires me to get back to having that extra elbow room needed for quality thinking and work Kudos!

I like the video very much. Low End laptops are usually built using low-end low-quality and poorly assembled components, which means you would also get not only poorly performing, but also poorly built laptop, which as mentioned is also very hard and expensive to repair. For example I owned a Lenovo U350, which for 500 EUR with 1 year warrantee. Exactly few months after the warranty the battery gave out, replacement (non original) one 50 EUR and again gave out after year and half, yet another 50 EURO. Machine overheats and need replacement fan, which is very hard to find and hard to replace. Performance is very very poor, with no options to upgrade...

Buying a desktop as main computer is a perfect idea for students and use a flash memory stick to store your files and use the public computers. But what happens when isp provider goes down and you have a essay to due the next day you would need a laptop and use a public network at a coffee shop to access information and do it last minute at 2am I have to say having a laptop is really good for emergency getting a cheap laptop is wise to do because why would you spend $600 laptop and you are going to use it about 20 times for the past 6 years if you have a main computer already "desktop". I would get laptop that will be good for my surfing the web needs and documentation stuff. therefore I would not rely on my isp provider when it comes to a huge storm or for something technical in the neighborhood Laptops are always good for emergency usage. renting them out by the school laptop are useless because colleges are university only allow students to take them out with in the campus, you can't take them home with you. That's my statement on laptops and desktops for students

Smartphone owners can always share their phone's internet connection to their desktop computer by making their phone to WLAN accesspoint, or just by using charging cable (it stresses phone less, charges it, and gives internet to computer via USB port). So, point is, your smartphone is your reserve internet accesspoint.

I use my phone for internet. Because I have a long commute, I can still work on my paper using my phone and save either to hard drive or in the cloud. So you really don't need a laptop or pc. Just use a good tablet LOL

I agree totally. I have an old Dell XPS, and it’s old, but fast, for obvious reasons (MS spying) I use Windows 7, and find it useful for around the house tasks, but my main is a computer tower linked to my music studio. I build, and to be honest with you, building your own is not hard, now you can find self build tutorials. I use a tablet for outside, but wouldn’t use a phone myself, because I value my eyes. I know there are going to be those who will disagree, probably because you’ve never used a modern PC. Nice video, and accurate

Having worked as a University repair technician who specialized in computer repair for students I 100% agree with you. Students always ask this same question and often refuse to believe me when I say either save up for a laptop that is $650 plus and always get an SSD or get a desktop and a tablet with a keyboard and stylus. Parents look at you with a puzzled look until you explain that their child will lose so much time, patients and may have late assignments if they cut corners on their tech. College/Uni is expensive but having the right technology, backing up your work and getting a device good enough to provide entertainment in their downtime is worth the investment. I always found that telling parents a laptop is investment much like their child's education gets them on the same page. It's like sending your kid to a no name trade school vs a 4 year institution. You generally get what you pay for and for me I'd rather either invest in a good laptop or a decent tablet and desktop because my time and work are more valuable than a few hundred bucks saved. Long term vs short term thinking. Also the horror stories like "help I had my thesis for my PHD on here and I never backed it up" really do break your heart when you do this for a living. Thankfully students generally learn from those mistakes but never wish data loss on anyone. Great video!

It's usually easier to recover data from a dying mechanical hard drive than an SSD though. Mechanical hard drives also tend to die slow deaths whereas ssds die much quicker. Reading the title of the video, I thought this would be some sort of hoax, apparently I have the same opinion about laptops, hard-drive have always been causing bottle necks on my laptops, here's something you didn't talk about, the quality of electricity in your home can be not suitable for a desktop, I have this problem, every desktop I bought had overheating, low performance, BSODs... when the voltage goes below 205 volts, yes buying a regulator would solve the problem or a PSU but still, that's an issue that, in the current time, forcing me to use a laptop as the power adapter does some sort of filtering or something that cancels that voltage drop.

I went for desktops initially because they were cheaper but have burnt 3 pretty quickly because of power issues. The only problem is that the Li-ion battery dies each year.

Spot On! A 7890K based desktop and a $120 tablet is best. I use my 10 inch android tablet for everything I used to use a laptop for. Get a cheap bluetooth keyboard and mouse and you're good to go. It's amazing to me how often people buy really high-end (read expensive) computers just to browse the web, watch YT videos, etc. What a waste. A friend runs a large office and he simply discards machines when his IT people tell him that they are too expensive to repair or employees complain that they are "too slow". He usually asks if I want any of them. So far, most have had only very simple to fix software issues. Others were just cluttered with malware, etc. One had a bad power supply. Fixed them all. I use an $89 Chromebook for lots of stuff and to chromecast to the TV. Hardly ever need one of the (free) notebooks I rescued from the dumpster.

I have an Asus Mv70n, an almost unknown laptop. It is going to be 10 in spring. I am writing this on it! It has a 640GB HD (actually, 2), which still works well, a CD/DVD,17" screen, camera that rotates (yes!), fingerprint scanner, 4 USB ports, an excellent mechanical keyboard, and a resolution that is HIGHER than High-res (you can't find this any more, except the new 3K and 4K extra-expensive laptops.) It maintains 4GB of ram. It is amazingly well-built and sturdy, all it needed was one fan change (about 40$) when it got filled with dust. It is still fast (there are 10 tabs and about 5 different programs running as I write this), opens apps quickly, and can play top-notch games from a few years back, if not on ultra settings. There are no more laptops being made like this.

I couldn't agree more, the disposable computer market is out of control, I've been looking into several "stick PC's" for around 100 bucks they seem to be able to do most things a student would need, and at a actually disposable price point. All you need is a monitor, and if you get a couple years out of a 100 dollar computer that seems like it would be worth it. I would be curious what your thoughts would be around this particular market.

I totally agree with your assessment of what would be the best computer for most people. People spend so much time trying to "multi-tasking" by watching television while working on a paper; it just doesn't work. I travel for work covering half the continent of the US. My laptop comes out maybe once per month to do my expenses and write some reports or proposals and I am a seasoned professional. My cell phone does much more of my work, even reports (using speech to text) to write my reports. Very good advice.

smartphones and tablets are useless for me if they cant run pc applications. for surfing they are great but most productive programs need windows. they often don't need a lot of power but they are just not made for android. try to run matlab, altium, eclipse, orcad, autodesk inventor, pspice, qt.... on a tablet. even if they would run, the os is crap. you do not even have a normal file explorer. and for working on them you anyway need a mouse and a real keyboard. i havent touched my tablet in over 2 years. a smartphone can do everything a tablet can. and for the rest you need a pc.

As a student, I still carry a laptop AND an ipad to school. So people living on apartments, still benefits from laptops. Also, not all people have their own places. Some stay in apartments, where a PC might not fit but a thin and smaller laptop can. Edit: just want to add that my last desktop pc was windows xp sp3. When win 7 came out, a laptop became my main computer. Addendum, with regards to upgradeability, look for videos on a 2012 macbook pro performing the same as the latest ones with just an ssd and ram upgrade. Upgrading can definitely be practical even for laptops. :)

"The world of education is changing." - Certainly is if they are not teaching when to use 'there' (as in "I saw it over there") and 'their' (as in "They are in over their head") "Thinking the surface tablets could be a good direction if the are upgradeable and repairable" - but that is the whole point of this video, A/they are NOT upgradable nor be so in the foreseeable future, B/neither are they repairable but for minor repairs due to complexity of single board, lack of easily sourced/replaceable components and associated cost of an electronics engineer who specialises in such. However I do agree it is not ideal being tied to a desktop,the future as I see it is cloud computing (already here) with a small personal device for input/output (already here, smart phones) and projected 'holographic' screens (coming soon), we do not need (or want) to lug around all the hardware.

I'm a proponent of NOT filling the earth's landfills with working machines-- of any sort. What I find (as a residential IT repair woman) is that people ring me to set up "new" & horribly anemic, cheap laptops-- which they've purchased "because" their old laptop simply needed to be reinstalled. Many times, I'm able to convince them to return the cheap-o & stick with what they had (if beefier than the new one). I second the move to SSD, as well. Best thing you can do (& maximizing RAM). I found that the 250/256GB to be the performance-to-cost "sweet-spot". And NO-- you do NOT use the computer's drive to store the only copy of your data. This isn't 1998 when HDD's were 2GB in total capacity and external storage was limited to floppy disks! Most people would be fine with a temporary copy uploaded to FREE 15GB Google Drive until they're able to make a backup at home. So, sticking with the original laptop, upgrading to SSD, new battery, + reinstall costs about $270AUD. A lot less than forking out $400+AUD to end up with junk (& many times, no DVD, which many people still do like to have). Yes, I realize that USB DVD players's are available, but that's one more cost, one more piece of hardware laying around vs. in-built. One other thing to consider is that the layout of the machine is already familiar & that matters-- a LOT, to many folks. The best thing about the reinstall is I do a bare-bones: no junk, only drivers. Then, I add browsers & worthwhile freeware. Lastly, I create a system image to their external backup drive (for next time). 90% of my work is through referrals because people are so pleased. Great video.

I have to disagree with the statement that "professors have notes available online." Yea SOME do that but the majority of them don't due to copyrighting their own notes for some odd reason. i am a engineer and i been in the technology field now for almost 10 years.. this is the worst advice i come across on you tube. If some one asked me if they wanted a cheap computer that is reliable. i would say an older 2015 lenovo think pad version t420,t430s. they are the more reliable computers i have come across. under 300$ the design are solid and can hold up most wear and tear, they even have a water draining system in case of spills. and upgraded with love ( adding and ssd or Msata, ram,proper upgrades, and proper drive upgrades ) they are wicked fast and reliable. i would stay away from dells, hp, and Toshiba laptops. unless you intro graphic or music design or just love mac i would recommend macs too, but if your using for work or school you will end up ruining windows on it or poning up more cash to buy programs that are cheaper on windows. worried about your files pop out the dvd bay and pop in a second ssd and back up your files. by the way most laptops dont accumulate that much dust if they are somewhat take care of and because they are mobile. A pc tower sits around most people stick it somewhere under their desk and dont look at it only to press the power button they pick up more dust.
@trubrewman7 жыл бұрын
Christian Falconi Desktop a breeze to open up and clean out dust. Laptop has dust sucked up in the tiniest crevices that most people can't clean out without disassembling down to MB, likely by a pro.
@christianfalconi70767 жыл бұрын
again my experience in the field shows me that most people throw their desktop under a desk and dont even touch them until something goes wrong. laptops dont pick up as much as your making them out to...i agree a desktop is easier to clean but the reality is the majority of people dont open a desktop unless something goes wrong. so the dust factor is a stupid argument to tell someone to avoid laptops all together.

i have already convinced more than 10 people from work to buy lenovo T420, as i am really satisfied after buying one myself. for $250, you get : i5 2540m 8 gb of ram 500 gb hdd (varies actually, some comes with 320 gb or even ssd) 1 gb vram of NVS4200m and DVD RW :D can't believe all of adobe software running smooth (yes, even after effect) on this old cheap laptop. oh and this laptop is so well built. if someone annoys you, you could just hit him with T420 and guaranteed he will at least be in hospital for a week

I'm an EE who has been using computers continuously since a time when windows was something you looked through, a laptop was always a reference to the top of ones thighs, and a mac was always prefixed by the word big,. During that time I've assembled, repaired and helped many people select or manage a PC. In general, people do not take very good care of their personal compute devices and other electronics out of ignorance and laziness. They do not blow out the dust a couple times/year, they do not get and update proper virus software (less of an issue these days as it's more automated), they do not do proper and regular backups, they pick poor passwords, they install questionable software, they do no remove software they don't need, they eat food over the keyboard, they toss it around like a toaster and don't handle it with care, and most have no idea what capabilities they actually need. Most people these days need access to more than one type of computing device. It's not a simple matter of laptop vs desktop per se. Personal computing devices are commonly categorized as a desktop, laptop, tablet, smart phone. A few people need or want all four categories, some with multiple computer devices even within a category, while a few need or want only one compute device. Unfortunately the masses don't always make the good choices in personal computing. I do think that laptops should have a more limited audience than desktops on the whole, but beyond that I can't make a specific recommendation without reviewing detailed requirements. Not only do compute and mobility requirements need to be considered, but other things like...is the person consciousness about taking care of things, do they live in a place where things are often stolen, will other people be using the device, what is their level of technical expertise, what kind of help readily available to them, what is their expected lifespan of the device, what is their ongoing budget for compute devices, etc. The answers to these questions vary wildly and are significant in making good choices. Be wary of anyone who tries to tell you what compute devices you need without demonstrating their expertise, part of which is requiring a detailed personal discussion with you before making any recommendations.

I bought an HP Elitebook 8460p Intel Core i7 , refurbished and with no hard drive for $139.99 on ebay. Then I bought a 128 gig SSD for $50 and a DVD of Windows 7 Professional for $45. About $235 for a pretty decent little computer. The 128gig SSD I had already and it's too small, so I have a 500 gig Western Digital ssd coming that I paid $130 for. So for $310 I have not a bad little laptop that is mil spec, so it can handle most bumps and bangs. Plus I can take it places with me.

HealMyTech no exact model lol, was just suggesting that if you are buying a laptop for say, £350, buy a chromebook since then the manufacturer focuses more on build quality because the chromeos is free, also it's well optimised and really fast for the hardware you get. Although if it were me, I'd build a used PC for £150 (assuming the uses would stay the same as with the chromebook - browsing the web). £350 would build a great used gaming pc, though.

There are way too many factors for boot times to be measured in that fashion.. such as each system has a differing ammount of RAM the ASUS was slower to boot likely due to the 8 GB RAM vs the 3 GB in the DELL and the 4 GB in the HP this is because when a system boots it has to load all startup apps and windows services in the RAM in order to function. this is why an SSD makes such a huge benefit as it speeds up the data transfer to RAM on startup..

I guess you mean you have a dual-core CPU, 500GB Hard Drive, and a GT 555M. That's kind of weird since your CPU is pretty shit, but you have a dedicated graphics card. Sorry to say this, but you probably can't upgrade the GPU. 98% of laptops have a GPU soldered onto the motherboard so it is not detachable. The laptops that can are very rare and usually are top-of the line, beast gaming laptops. So sorry, you can probably only upgrade your RAM (6GB is a bit less), storage, and your CPU (make sure you have sufficient cooling as the cooling needed differentiates between different processors).
@greatvaluebleach54487 жыл бұрын

Now this can bottle neck, but if I can milk the system a bit more with a gtx1050ti. and I've seen some decent gains from other people. Now the 1050 won't be running at 100%, but if it I can milk it until rysen 5 prices drop a bit. I could build a fair system. or wait for a Zen based apu.

I'd never have a laptop ! I have my computer man build my computers for $300. Desk tops. Works great ! Laptops are health dangerous as are Smart Phones ! Plus repairs or clean up cost twice as much for a laptop. Never use Wifi or let it near you ! WiFi is deadly to your health and cancer is a guarantee. Your kids are exposed to high WiFi at school for 8 long hours a day ! ALL schools have it now ! Teachers also are exposed to it. Kids are getting cancer like never before and brain tumors from deadly cell phones ! Laptops will sterilize you ! Get back to note books to take notes - they are forever and will never shut down on you so you lose everything. Write your notes in a notebook. And a notebook is a lot easier to carry then a heavy clumsy computer ! And you won't get radiated from it ! St Jude's hospital specializes in child cancer and the hospital is over loaded with cases ! Get a regular old fashioned house hard line phone with the handset wired to the phone - get rid of the cell phones and laptops ! IT's bad enough everyone is exposed to the deadly cell towers that are now weaponized ! Without your health, you have no life at all ! ===

Why do you need a computer to take notes? Use a pen & paper. You will remember the lecture better if you have to think about it to take notes. You could also just record the lecture and take notes later. Voice recorders are cheap & you can upload the recording also later. The more contact you have with the contents of the lecture, the more repetition, the more you will remember, and the better you will do on exams.
