Just a great mechanic in a garage passing on useful knowledge to the masses. Glad to see how successful you are. It’s deserved. I agree with EVERY one of those rules. One I would add is this: If you plan on waiting for your car to be done (say it's something like an oil change or something small) Let the scheduler know! That way early morning waiters can be scheduled accordingly and I don't have someone who I assume is dropping it off and coming back later rushing me to get them done when I have someone else already waiting for that time frame. Of course not all shops allow waiting, but I also get people who think they are going to wait for a timing belt/chain install and i'm sorry but no... That takes far too much time and it may not be done that day.

Would be nice if a lot of shops actually abided by these rules. Took a car I had to a body shop some years back. I spoke to the owner 3 weeks ahead of time. I told him I was going to be on vacation for a week. If I left my car on Monday morning could I have it back by Friday? Shop owner told me it was no problem. Went to pick up my car, the owner was like, "Why are you here?" Then he told me it would be another week. When I demanded the return of my car, the shop owner demand that I pay him for the parts he purchased for the repair. I told him to shove the parts. He refused to give back the keys. I threatened to call the cops and he tossed the keys across the counter. You have to get EVERYTHING in writing. There are lots of low life customers out there but they are matched by low-life shop owners.

My local mechanic has me drop the car off for diagnosis and then schedules a day for the repair. He orders the parts and is ready the day of your repair. I live in major metropolis. At first I didn't like this setup having experienced the same day work in previous locations through out the country, but I noticed that he is super thorough and always back to OEM spec. Sadly I’ve had very little luck with shops. The second to last time I brought a car to a shop, the car ran fine, but the vacuum hoses were deteriorating and I couldn’t source them, so I asked a shop to do it and said I wasn’t in a big hurry as it was a spare car, after about a month they called me and said it would be about $400 just to diagnose the problem? I picked it up and didn’t let them touch it. The last time, I went to another shop because my exhaust was loud and I needed to get the car inspected. They replaced an exhaust clamp I had put over a hole, old clamp was fine. They charged me $350 to replace a $4 clamp, and then it failed inspection, and when I brought it back to the shop, the said I needed a new exhaust manifold. Why the fuck didn’t they check that the exhaust was in passable condition before telling me it was done and charging me such a bs price? I refuse to go to any shops because of those experiences, I do it myself, or go to a mechanic friend I know personally, to have them do work for me outside of a shop.

Here's some things you should ALWAYS do or say to your mechanc. 1) I want the replaced part (unless there is a core charge). 2) I want actual hours not billable hours. (the repair guide is often wrong). 3) What is your warranty on the repair? 4) Reviews. (Check BBB, Google, State etc) 5) Put a tracker or other monitoring device on the car before handing it over. I am sure there are others. Sadly in todays world, there are more scam shops than there are good ones. I had one issue I needed fixed on my truck, took to 3 shops, scammed by all. Thousands spent, problem remained. Sold truck. I do 98% of the work myself but once in awhile I get into a problem I just can't figure out. But here in Georgia, I bet there isnt 20 good shops in the entire state. So yeah you may deal with issues with customers, but believe me, us customers have issues dealing with mechanics also.
@circeseye1

i agree on the billable hours bs. usually depending on car or part billable hours are wrong and hell even description they give explaining why is bs.i had a mechanic quote a high price and hours on a repair. i called him out and explained why he was wrong. he quoted 8 hours on a 4 hour tops repair and was going to disconnect and remove stuff not needing to. (yes i ended up doing the repair in 4 hours without s lift would have been less with a lift...it was both lower control arms btw) he literally said he had to lift the engine and tranny up out of the engine bay

If your customer surprises you with a storage request, you should add to BEFORE FIX PAPERWORK verbage explaining that after your car is fixed, you will receive 3 attempted phone calls / emails (whatever) after that time, you will receive 3 days of free storage. From then on inside storage costs X amount and outside storage costs Z amount and will be added on to your final tab. Remind them at the end of the repair that if they take longer than 3 days there is a fee (I would make it a minnimum 1 week storage fee to deter customers from leaving the car there "for a few more days").

#1 isn't always an option. #2. No problem. Especially diagnostics. Especially NVH that cannot be diagnosed with a scan tool. And also parts as you say. #3. No problem. Always show up when they open and be considerate enough to give them 10 or 15 minutes to get their day going. #4. Hmm. It seems that shops are so busy these days because nobody can afford a new to them car. My shop, highly rated, is terrible with communication lately. It's a two way street. #5. Recent inflation in parts and labor costs is making this increasingly difficult. See #4 above regarding the cost of a new to you car. This is straining both sides of the relationship. #6. Totally agree. My shop is in a shady community with no inside storage. Maybe you can do a vid on how to deal with a misdiagnosis that results in a repair that costs far more than it should have. I recently had a noise in the belt drive of my engine. It was diagnosed as a power steering pump. The pump was replaced and blew the seals out of the rack and pinion. Possibly due to improper bleeding of the pump fluid lines. $1850. I picked the car up and it was still making the noise. After a another visit it was diagnosed as the alternator. I got a second opinion and it still pointed to the power steering pump. It ultimately turned out to actually have been the alternator. My shop replaced the alternator for free. A nice gesture. The tech was fired. But the rack and pinion cost $1350 to R&R. The clock spring was also damaged during the rack replacement. This is a 5 star rated shop with a number of personal referrals. The clock spring is still not repaired. They're claiming a problem in the CAN bus system. Auto repair is def getting challenging. Especially with all of the proprietary diag tools. In my case the shop doesn't have VAGCom.
@tsherwoodrzero
@tsherwoodrzero 11 ай бұрын
I'd like to hear about this too. From back in the day, it would be the shop that would eat the cost of misdiagnosis, including parts and labor plus consequential damages. Maybe it's different now? Either way, hearing it straight from the Wizard would be a big benefit to all.
@TheJeffcurran
@TheJeffcurran 11 ай бұрын
@@tsherwoodrzero It would be nice to hear. I'm a certified GM mechanic from the 90s. Maybe a dinosaur. But it was OBDII. It's not ancient history. I have also owned and maintained 3 BMWs from 2006 to 2018. All at the same time. Starters, alternators, crankcase vent systems. Typical BMW nonsense. Stuff that I could do in my driveway at the time. At that time I had a mechanic that respected my experience and took my word when I came into his shop and offered my diagnosis for something that I couldn't repair myself. At least he listened. Now I have no means to service my own cars anymore. I need a mechanic. But my latest highly rated mechanic for my current VWs didn't seem to listen. I complained of a "grinding and oscillating" noise from the belt drive. The invoice stated that the customer complained of a screeching noise from the belt drive. They didn't listen. And they didn't dig deeper. They did a quick cursory diagnosis and fixed the wrong part. And broke other parts along the way. Highly rated on Google and Yelp. Nowadays it seems that mechanics have this holier than thou attitude and nobody could possibly be as knowledgeable as they are. This kind of primadonna crap is a real problem. We're not all a bunch of mechanically ignorant Millennials or Gens Z. And quite honestly @Car Wizard, I don't appreciate the lecture. My tool box "was" nearly as big as yours. I just don't have it anymore. I live in a condo with a home owners association. Maybe I'm not the target demographic for this video. I guess like pretty much everything these days I have to cave in to the experts.

@@TheJeffcurran You're fine, my dad was an engineer for GM in the late 60s. He once told me "A new car won't get you there any faster, safer or cheaper. Just Shinier, for now." Sometimes the oldschool approach works best. Other times, thinking outside the box works wonders. I use both on everything from a 97 Expedition to a E38 BMW 7-series and even R32 Skylines and a few dozen Eunos Cosmos for good measure. If there's one thing I know, money can't buy experience, and you definitely have a LOT of it. Don't sell yourself short. Cars don't have to be hard, stupid pricks in upper management make them that way. So go with what works for YOU. The more "highly rated" a shop is on Google/Yelp, the more of a red flag it is to me. Simple explanation: an honest, skilled shop always has a little "dirt" to it. And you're definitely right about mechanics having quite the arrogant attitude. Ask anyone about the FD Mazda RX-7, you'll hear legends of dealership techs crying from trying to diagnose them. Now imagine if it is a Right-hand drive and nothing was in English, and maybe 1/5 of the RX7 applies to what you're working on. Even the best Wankel shops and mechanics were giving up. So I stepped up, taught myself Japanese and wrote the manual for working on the Eunos Cosmo. Now I'm working on a wiring diagram book for every Japanese FD RX-7, including the Spirit R. While simultaneously decrypting the first in-car GPS system from the Cosmo to make it work outside of Japan. It was built in 1990 and I'm the first one to dig into the code that makes it work. All stuff that the "experts" said was impossible. Everyone in the 90s thought they were the best at Street Fighter 2. Then Akuma appeared and taught them the meaning of pain. Usually in 15 seconds or less.

About the appointment times. Here in Montreal, ESPECIALLY this time of year, we DO have times. This is because right now is the time of year when people change over their summer tires for their winter tires (mandatory by law in Quebec no later than December 1st). If someone shows up a half hour late, it screws up the whole schedule. My boss got fed up with people not respecting their appointments, and so he started declining service if someone was 15 minutes or more late. Believe you me, people learned VERY quickly, and now that very rarely happens...

As for the subject of being a lender, a chain garage that specialized in oil changes and tires had management so afraid to sell any kind of repair because it might drive the customer away, would ask the mechanic to pay the bill!!! Generally, if a car needs a major repair, and telling the customer what it will cost drives them away, it says something about that shops reputation.

Good video. I'd like to see a video that focuses on what to say or not say to a mechanic regarding repairs or problems. Like, how much should you explain the problem you're having, especially if you don't know what's wrong with the car. Sometimes what you say can influence how they try to fix your car. Mechanics are only human, after all.

My local shop is great and does honest work, and sometimes even free diagnostic work, and saved me money by being honest and telling me my problems were way less when I came in having made my own conclusions. But they only have 2 bays and are always behind schedule- my car was there for 6 weeks once.

Wizard, or any knowledge people, I have a question. I took my 02 pathfinder into the shop, and on the service request I wrote “suspension & wheel alignment” I knew I had something loose on the front passenger corner causing a clunk whenever I drove over a speed bump. Well they called me back and said hey were doing your wheel alignment and we found play in both front wheel bearing, so the alignment won’t hold unless we replace these. I asked them if the bad wheel bearings could be causing the clunk, he said yes it was very possible but he’d get the mechanic to test drive it again after they replaced it. They called me back and told me they found out the strut mounts were worn out which is what would be causing the clunking. I’m wondering why they didn’t inspect the vehicle in the order I asked them to? (Suspension first, then wheel alignment), it ended up being $1100 to get the alignment and wheel bearings replaced, which left me without enough money to pay to get the struts replaced, which would have fixed the clunk, which was the whole reason I brought it in. I probably could have done a wheel bearing job myself but definitely not struts i don’t think. I’m just very disappointed because it cost me $1100 and my steering wheel still shakes at 100km/h and the clunk is still there. Obviously I was wrong to even ask for an alignment, and I kind of knew which is why I typed suspension first, I was very confident it was my suspension causing the clunk yet they choose to do the more lucrative work first, and then tell me I could come back to get my struts replaced for $1400. I’m only 22, this was my first experience with a mechanic and I’ll probably be attempting to do everything myself from now on because I feel like there wasn’t any logic in what they did.

This sounds like a case of possibly being profiled. I try to not jump to conclusions, but in this day and age of everything tanking every few months, "buyer beware" earns its weight in gold. What I suspect happened is they saw an easy mark, threw out some buzz words, got you panicked with "it won't work" and you took the bait, hook, line and sinker. The good news is that you're not alone, and plenty of people have been there before too. Including me. Your assessment of suspension was correct though. Anyway, wheel bearing play is to the tune of fractions of a millimeter and usually requires a Dial Indicator Gauge to measure. On the Eunos Cosmo (Mazda, early 90s Japan only luxury car), the Wheel bearing Axial (in/out) play spec for all 4 corners is 0.05 mm or less. Lateral Play (up/down and left/right) spec is 0.1 mm or less. To test Lateral Play, grab the sides of the tire and act like you're turning the car left or right. I would wager that they lied to you and didn't even touch the bearings at all. Easy profit for sketchy shops. Suspension clunking on bumps is generally caused at the pivot points. This includes Suspension arm bushings where the arms bolt to the chassis and Ball joints (more common). Ball Joints are where the top and bottom of the wheel hub/knuckle assembly (where the wheel is bolted on at), they allow the wheel to go up and down like a parallelogram. Pretty cheap for parts, and not too labor-intensive to replace (most are pressed in). It explains why a sketchy shop would do the Boogeyman Routine to get more money from you. I'd suggest disputing the charge and/or contacting an attorney that specializes in these matters such as Steve Lehto in Michigan.

@@tsherwoodrzero this was a NAPA auto pro shop, that had fancy radio ads talking about how ignoring that clunk would eventually cause a larger repair bill, made it sound like they were good at diagnosing suspension problems so I went to their website and booked the appointment. They never saw my face or anything but they could’ve looked at the camera when I dropped my pathfinder off (it was closed when I left it there). I will definitely be trying to fix things myself from now on.

If, for some reason under the sun, moon and stars, I can't have the car by the weekend, so be it. I always told my wife that if she had to go into a mechanics shop that we didn’t know (say our usual trusted shop was booked out and couldn’t do an emergency repair that I didn’t have time to do myself), that if they asked “so do you know anything about cars?”, to NEVER say “Not much I’m afraid”. She always told them “Yep, I work on cars with my husband all the time.” Just in case.

I very rarely take my car to someone to get it repaired due to working it myself. There are times that I wil,l especially if it is a specific repair. (Eg. Body work, upholstery, etc.) Most times, I take my vehicles on a trailer and go pick them up as well so, I have no issues with getting a ride. I always bring the car the night before and leave keys in the key-drop box. Some of my mechanics just started charging 3% for credit card users; so, I pay with cash. As far as everything else you mentioned I agree with 100%. GREAT VIDEO!

I try to avoid the bad habit of diagnosing the issue for the shop/mechanic. Try to stick to the symptoms, what has changed and when it happened seems to be a good strategy. I’ve also had some very honest conversations about what I expect to pay and always get an estimate beforehand. They are pretty upfront when a repair doesn’t go as planned or unexpected costs pop up. I also think they appreciate that I keep up on the basic maintenance - plugs, oil, filters. They understand I’m there for something I can’t fix, and generally don’t have worry about general items - or try to upsell basic stuff. This helped me get 400,000 plus miles out of mile 2002 Saturn SL with minimal heavy work needed (PS rack, water pump), which makes it the lowest cost per mile vehicle I’ve ever owned.

This video should have been titled 'treating your mechanic (or other tradesperson) with common courtesy'. I can think of a better list of things not to say to your mechanic: 1. "Just fix it, I don't care how much it costs!" (more workshops than not will take this VERY literally) 2. "This job should only take x hours!" (uhhh unless you're a mechanic and you've done this exact job on this exact car... in fact even then.... just don't tell people how to do their job) 3. "But this other workshop said it would only cost $x or it only needed Y doing!" (well why didn't you take it there then) 4. "Please remove my catalytic converter / disable this emissions gear / cut my springs / insert other illegal mods" (don't expect your mechanic to risk his livelihood doing this stuff for you) 5. "I can get that same part for $100 less on eBay!" (Go on then, you buy it, and you fit it, and you deal with it if it breaks) 6. "These tyres/brakes/lights/rust holes etc are still totally roadworthy" (ahhhh... if your mechanic says they're not.... look I know there are some shonks out there but mostly... you should probably listen instead of endangering yourself and others The way I look at it is - if you don't trust your mechanic - don't frickin go there, find someone you DO trust, getting someone to fix and maintain your car is not a single transaction deal, it's an important business relationship and you should value it.

One point on the calling. I don't answer calls from numbers i don't know or not in my contacts. I have my mechanic's number in my contact list. When he calls I answer. But, if the tech calls me using an extension, personal phone, buddy's phone I am not answering. USE THE BUSINESS PHONE. Usually they leave a voice message but like everyone else I work and don't check my message every minute. One shop I dealt with, transmission, they have a great system, they send you an email or text with the PDF of the estimate. You can Accept or Decline right there online.

Theyre lucky we let the car sit that long. Told me they should be able to get it done in one day. Told them I'm retired and to keep it at least two or three days. One time my 3 month old new Ford was towed to the nearest Ford dealer who lied to me five days in a row. The tow truck dropped off car on street sticking out 10" from curb. Drove by it every day. They never moved it until fifth day then took two weeks to get it repaired. I raised cane with Ford and they paid for halve the price that I paid to rent a car.

For regular service I just schedule a time and wait at the shop until it's finished (quite common to do so here in Belgium) and for major repairs they'll provide me with a demo vehicle to take home and return when it's finished. One of the reasons I'll stay loyal to my dealer, they do the maintenance while I wait or they give me a car to drive home with. And when my factory warranty is over in a few months I'll just keep going there due to the nice service they provide. The only thing missing there is a decent coffee machine 😂

I'm happy after that experience I found my own wizards. Two brothers and a dad who work diligently on anything I bring them. Much like Hoovie between my two work vehicles and two sports cars they always have something. I can hand them the keys tell them whats wrong and even get a ride home because I live so close. I understand that things happen but I like to be told the truth. Motorcycle mechanics are the worse, you schedule a time to come in, 2 weeks in advance, drop it off and you're told that it's a 5 hour job. At the end of the day it's not done. A week later it's still not done. I'm not impatient but I do expect to receive timely service as well. Like I said "communication" and "honesty" needs to occur.
