I manage a boarding kennel and do nail trims daily. Using a dremmel on a dog who isn't raised with it can also be a nightmare. That sound and vibration will freak them out more so than the clippers do. If you start them early absolutely use the dremmel. I've raised 6 and only use the dremmel on them. I never make them bleed. But an adult can be a different story. But I agree. This could have been handled much better.

I have a 6yo German shepherd and a 7mo pit/rottie/husky. And from day one I play with their feet, pads, cut their nails, look in and wipe their ears and have them let me look at their teeth and brush them. The earlier the better to start.

I have a 70 pound pitbull that didn't like her nails trimmed. I found that if I gave her a piece of hotdog after each clip, she tolerates it. She almost looks forward to it. Go slow, reward, and praise. Also dont trim as short . Stay far away from the quick. The quick will actually move back the more you trim .

I started clipping one nail a day for a couple weeks. Then 2 a day for a couple weeks. Then a whole paw for a couple weeks. Then both the fronts every day for a couple weeks. Just taking tiny slivers off each time. So that way there's always mail for you to cut. Now she doesn't mind it.

The big one used ti have really horrible digital cysts, and it's made him very nervous about his feet. He lets me do one paw at a time, as long as he gets lovies between each toe. You turn it on and put it against the nail. It's not rocket science. It's literally just sand paper that's spinning. Just don't be a dumd ass and be careful how low u take it. Or u could go free and just walk it for half hour a day on a rough surface like a road or a path. With no excuses not to go and do it. Raining ? Do it anyway. Really hot ? Do it anyway and take a drink for the dog. I don't want to be a dick about this but common ppl in sure u can figure this stuff out for yourself. This only goes to inforce my view of ppl should need a license to own a dog. As ppl have no idea what there talking about and then they end up being left on a mountain or left in a kennel to eventually be put down if they aren't adopted

As a dog groomer, hanging the dog up in the sling can be very helpful and help them to calm down when done right. Also, most dogs will allow you to use nail clippers over a dremel…. It is important for dog owners to learn how to cut the nail to the proper length and have quick stop powder on hand to stop a bleeding nail.

I used a Dremel with my Rottweiler. At first she would withdraw her paw and growl. Clippers are barbarian. Never use them, I saw the damage they do. Even vets can't use them. Never, ever use clippers! I gradually gain the dogs trust with treats a making it fun. It's how you introduce the Dremel Don't rush the event. Within weeks she would give me her paw and recline and sleep as her nails got done. That's how you do it.

Going on 8 years of clipping my dog’s nails once a week and never clipping a quick a single time, they’re not barbaric at all you just have to know what you’re doing and at the end of the day if you’re walking your dog(s) their nails will file down and round off so no harm in leaving it slightly longer than you need if one is still learning

My dog used to hate nail trims, but I eventually made the decision to take a few steps back and desensitize her to the dremmel and nail clippers- now she does pretty much perfectly! I still reward after each nail just to keep the experience less stressful. Now when I sit down in front of her with the clippers, she will give me her paw and allow me to trim them with no issues. I do prefer the dremmel for safety, but I’ve never had any issues with the clippers since she doesn’t try to run off/pull her paw away, so I start off with the clippers and finish with the dremmel.

I never gave my dog much proper training because we have an intuitive body language communication So in circumstances getting his nails cut he's very squirmy the longer it goes on. We try to dremel or similar once and it was an absolute nightmare so it depends on the dog but clippers are the only option for mine

1. That's peanut butter, not vomit 2. Absolutely correct, specifically use one of the battery powered dremels that are meant for dog paws. They're like $20 and have saved me so much time and money, it's unbelievable. 3. I find it's easiest to put treats on the ground, straddle my dog while they're standing and let them get distracted by the food as I start trimming by lifting 1 paw at a time(support the pad firmly so it doesn't vibrate and tickle). Start slow by not even touching their nails for the first couple times. It's a weird sensation, so work super slowly with them at first.

My golden retrievers both hate this too. I flip them over and wedge them between my legs as I sit on the floor with both legs out on either side of them. The calm down after the first foot is done usually. In the winter I let their nails get long because it helps with traction on our icy field (we plow our field for fetch space).

My two happily jump into my lap to get their nails filed and paw pads shaved - I think they worked out that it feels better to walk after - with one of them routinely falling asleep during the session. I also don’t hold the file in one spot but use an upward curved motion (start down, up, and over) which helps prevent heat buildup.

We used to use clippers but wed had like 1 or 2 accidents in the span of years and it was so obvious that trimming her nails was super traumatizing. So we figured we'd try the dremmel and we got that attachment for it for doing dogs nails. And after doin it once we didnt even need the guide its so much safer and easier. Its time consuming but who cares. If it makes it easier for ur dog then take the damn time to do it. Not only that but if u go to low and do make them bleed u can probably tell pretty early on so u dont do much damage, rather than taking off a whole big chunk in 1 go and having them bleed all over the house. Theres also this powder u can buy that if u do cut too short or make em bleed u dip it in the powder and it coagulates it so it stops bleeding a lot quicker. But always take care to not cut too short. It hurts them and traumatizes them.

He was ok until one hurt him. Pulled his leg under him rather than just changing sides. Pulled a muscle in his shoulder. Never did get him to cooperate after that. He had to be drugged. Then he got sick and died. I tried all kinds of things to get him to cooperate. He snapped at me once when I picked up a foot. I growled back. Later, he would tolerate me messing with his paws, but I only managed to tip one. Lots of good boys, etc. Need to start this with your pup. Unfortunately former owner saw no need to socialize him.

Next day same thing. Repeat for 3 rounds. Then go for an entire paw at end give treat. Next day new paw so on so on. Wait 3-5 days then repeat. It was a Slow AF process with my dog. She is three now and when she sees the clippers come out she know she is going to be get her (only at clipper time special.). Lol every dog has their favourite treats. She lays down belly up. Takes less the 3 mins to do now. Edit: clipping the smallest lil piece off at the tip. It will only work if you take lil pieces off. Then when your down to once or twice a month you can do the bigger nail clips.

I use a Dremel because I hate nail clippers! There's the guillotine type and the scissor type. Then of course there are human version nail clippers. My dog hates the clippers to begin with and makes it extremely difficult for me to clip her nails. So I acclimated her to the Dremel. She still doesn't like her nails done but she's a lot better at letting me do it now.

My HUSKY puppy came to us already desensitized for some reason, and on his first nail trimming i just offered him a treat for distraction and he let me clip his nails. That is until the puppy nipping comes and tries biting my hand for shits and giggles; but brushing and trimming nails are like a spa to him. Not to mention loves water and always wants to be under a hose. Im very surprised because i prepared for a stubborn dog (he still is) but looks like I’ll never have a problem with grooming my husky. I bought a husky to be my running partner, not for his looks.

As a pet sitter dog grothere's a lot of dogs afraid of the dremmel not just the clippers. I know a dog that's afraid of bulls including an electric toothbrush. I typically try calming treats with CBD to relax them and that helps.

So true. I'm a pet groomer. I've worked with dogs for a decade and I have had many clients that absolutely freak out over getting their nails clipped but are super chill for the dremel. Also if they don't start off as a puppy it gets significantly worse as they grow.

Mine was just laying down... Buy a good clipper that is actually sharp. Then take a flashlight and shine through the nails from the bottom, that shows you 100% exactly where the vein (or whatever it is in nails) is and you will never cut too deep. You're welcome!

The obedience technique and especially careful with the clippers has never failed. Tools running, like vacuum cleaners have always spooked the dogs regardless of the amount of exposure to them. I can’t expect any different with a Dremel tool although it certainly seems the best option. The pet can be trained to comply with trimming just like like bathing or jumping through hoops ❤👍🐕.

Wtf! Are you serious! Miss Mercedes, PetSmart Manchester Ct. 5’ nothing & used to handle my male 140lbs Rottie(Boom), & Lucy 110 female Rottie(batshit/crazy) w/ no problem. In fact both dogs knew we were going there & damn near mowed us down to get in the truck! Again thank you Mercedes.

My dog hates his nails being clipped but he'll stay put if I put them on his back and do his nails. You're just sometimes will pull his Paul wait for me but I still get it done and then he curls up in a ball and I have to cuddle in because he's upset

Clippers suck in my opinion. Started with a Dremel, introduced it to my Boston Terrier a long with practice training he pretty much lays through the whole process.
