Worst part of my golf game is watching way too many golf channels on YT and trying to integrate every tip into my swing and game! Kidding aside, I’m so glad Matt that you are back to providing tips and tutorials! Your videos about $300,000 memberships do me absolutely no good as I know I’ll never even come close to being able to afford that costly of a membership!

I start golf late in life (55) and started with Interlock grip. After a few months I realized I had a heavy grip on the club and was not getting any lag or whip at the bottom of swing. So no distance or launch. I tried overlap at the range one day just to see. I instantly got more lag, whip at the bottom and a little more distance. I've never tried 10 finger but now that I've been away a bit, I should. This was very informative. Thanks.

Also the advantage of the interlock over the others is that it greatly keeps the elbows together during the swing for solid contact. Also eliminates hooking/slicing & off-line shots. When Nancy Lopez & Mickey Wright practiced with the wide elastic band above their elbows it kept their elbows together. On page 49 of Hogan's 5 Lessons book, it also shows how important it is to keep the elbows together. Although he used an overlapping grip, he never lost the feel of keeping the elbows together throughout the swing. However, us mere mortals are not able to ingrain this position. Keep your elbows together on every shot during a round & you'll think you belong on tour.

Matt I have been following your site since I've began golfing 2 1/2 years approx with much pleasure. Your comment , "I should have never changed the interlocking grip. It was my best grip", did not fall on deaf ears. I have tried to copy and use the Hogan tips for the past year with some success. I have been using the overlap method. I survived a plane crash in 2010 with 4 plates, 16 screws. I felt your regret in leaving or altering the interlocking. At 69 with 90% right and approx 70% left hand/ arm use contact I felt unbalanced with sides competing R&L a bit. SO.... I heard you loud and clear! I wondered? So I took the new slight interlocking tips of yours in workout then to the range. BINGO! Both hands, wrist, and arm with body are working together smoothly. Wow now I have a team instead of teams hindering each other. The interlocking fit like a good glove! Thank you Sir! Thanks a million. My 15-16 hcp should drop a few strokes now. Man am I happy! 👍🙂👍

Great video. I do interlock my fingers and I obviously interlock to deep because my left pinky is no longer straight. I would love to see a video on possibly how to take divots with irons. I struggle with that.

Years ago I had trouble with my top hand rolling over and shutting the club face. An oldtimer told me that instead of interlocking the index finger on my right hand (I'm a lefty) between the pinky on my left hand I should interlock it between the ring finger and the middle finger. Well that worked. It locked my top hand in place enough to prevent me from rolling the top (left) hand over. Eventually I went back to the regular interlock however, occasionally the dreaded rollover happens and I get the big time PULL. So I saved your video and will review it again once the 5 month frost delay is over. CHEERS

Use interlock and your 3rd tip was amazing. I tried it and now have complete control of the club and posted 6 scores in a row that have been my best six in a row ever. Indexed has dropped 4 strokes from 18 to 14 in six rounds. U da man!!

Can you give me the perfect setup for how far the ball needs to be and how much I actually need to bend down in posture over the ball? Sometimes I feel like more upright is better and then I watch some videos of guys playing that are WAY over the ball and I'm not so sure so I inevitably keep switching it back and forth and can't find consistency.

Drop yo ass down 2 inches. Keep your weight in your heels. And the neighbour looking over the fence metaphor is pretty much spot on. As for ball position: I like to have the butt of the irons pointing to the left of my junk. My arms pointing at a "5:00" angle. Not 4:00 - not 6:00. 5:00. So as much distance as I need to get the club head next to the ball at address and the butt of the club pointing next to the twig and berries / cameltoe. Driver, Woods & Hybrids pointing straight at the knackers again at a 5:00pm angle. Good luck!

I’m an overlapper Matt. My game is a frustrating at the least. Inconsistent ball striking so my score reflects it. I hit a fade generally but then I’ll try to adjust and I’ll it a push right. I make adjustments throughout the round but there is always one aspect of the game that kills my round. That my friend is why golf is a four letter word. Love ya brother

Wow! Video is full of golden nuggets! This morning focused on the pinkies, and the thumb sliding into the opposite palm. During my swing I tried to keep a uniform pressure on the thumb palm touch point. I think I just learned what is mysteriously described as touch, and knowing the speed and pressure of the thumb palm touch point I learnt club path and club head speed. Did I explain that at all well? The result was - I was getting amazing directional and distance control. 1 foot left chips to the flag from under 50 yards and far more confidence.

Now I’m back to interlocking and I feel like I can control and secure the club so much better…BTW, dig those Jordans! I have the same model with the pony hair style! Love them!

I made the change two years ago after a lifetime of using the overlap grip to 10-finger. I did it as an experiment when I was speed training with the driver. I then realized that Midsized Plus 4 Grips vs Standard grips allowed me to swing much faster because my right hand now fully on the grip could apply more power. I then regripped all my clubs with the bigger Mid Plus 4 grips and I added one club's distance to all my mid and longer irons. Getting your right hand fully on the club is the future of golf in my opinion.

I lose the majority of my shots off the tee. This typically manifests itself as 3-4 triples on my card, because I'm hitting 3 off the tee. I've never developed a "fairway finder", even when dropping down to a fairway metal to try to minimize my miss. This is all compounded by my driver clubhead speed @ ~115 mph, which puts my misses deep in trouble rather than the rough or edge of the tree line. My index is 15.7, and I'm routinely 10-12 over on 4 of 18 holes. The rest of my game is pretty serviceable.

I have a major consistency issue with hitting out of the fairway. I constantly waste 290+ yard drives because I hit it too fat on my approach and dig up a ton of ground in front of the ball. If I’m hitting from the rough or a soft lie then I get great contact so I’ve almost started aiming for the side of the fairway as opposed to dead center. Love the channel and the positivity!

3 great interlock grip ideas ! My issues are twofold: my stance at the tee, despite a right blended knee for driver upsweep, and ball positioned to my left heel, I cannot consistently drive the balls in the air for distance, second is my backswing behind my head thru follow thru seems to attack driver to ball on a chop angle, shanking the ball short. When I align my left forearm more directly down the shaft and tighter to right forearm…it helps. But as a senior, I get fatigued or have arthritis hand and hip or back pain and it throws my swing off. Any advice is appreciated

Different situation obviously, but I am recovering from a broken scaphoid in my dominant hand. Injured in early July, out of the cast about a month and trying to play again. I struggle right now with driver distance. I’m carrying 170-200 yards and I carry my 3 iron just over 170 so it’s a real problem. I know I’m hitting down on the ball but I can’t seem to get a handle on it. Ive hit 260-280 with my driver before but that’s just a couple of times. I feel like as I’m gaining more distance with my irons and hitting my wedges better my driver is just getting worse and worse. At least it’s fairly accurate though! Is there a correlation between the interlocking grip, or any grip for that matter, and the grip on the club? The reason I ask is, with standard golf club grips, I feel like I have to strangle the club to keep from loosing it during the entire swinging process. So after watching your good golf club grip review video I recently purchased +4 gripes with hopes of having a more relaxed swinging experience. Which leads me to the question above.

My biggest struggle is club speed, I’m a senior recovering from broken shoulder. But, my biggest issue is green reading. I have very poor depth perception and I have hard time identifying low and high spots on the green. Very good lag putter, but struggle with line on 6-10 foot putts. I loved your 45 day challenge. Thanks for vid. I'm a new golfer and been really practicing hard this last year trying to get my game to a reasonable point. My 2 largest struggles are 1. My miss is usually a push. No slice, but just a high push that loses me 15-20 yards and obviously right of target. 2. My driver. It's gotten a lot better, but my miss is still a big push slice. This is what is holding me back the most. I lose a lot of balls right on the course. It's odd because I know I must be coming over the top but it doesn't feel like it and I don't slice my other clubs. I think I'm swiping across the ball really late in my swing. Don't know if you've seen that before or have some suggestions. Any help is appreciated!

A lot of the principals of this are in the Ben Hogan grip. I'm an interlocker but Hogan was an overlap guy. I pretty much follow his grip except I interlock. Those two fingers on your right hand are everything and should be firmly gripping the club your thumb and index finger on your right hand should be weak. If I flex my thumb on the right hand it activates muscles in my shoulders that cause an over the top motion and a slice.

Where at the golf ball do you aim at address and backswing? I've had several people tell me several spots, so I'm just wondering where you recommend.

When do u begin to bow the wrist? On a small chip. Long chip? Half swing wedge shot. Half shot? Or only on long full swings.

I think I struggle the most trying to figure out how close you need to be to the ball and how far your feet need to be in width with your wedges, like a 52, 50, 54 or even 56 degree. And how far does that back swing supposed to go

This was such a super helpful video! For a couple years I thought I was wrong to use interlock, considering almost everyone I see uses overlap. When I tried that, I felt the club was going to fly out of my hand. But I still thought something was off about my interlock. Tips 1/2 were fine, no problems there. But tip 3 blew my mind. It's late now, but I grabbed a club with that tip, and it feels SO much better. Can't wait to test it out. Thanks for all the amazing work you do! Also, if you see this, a video on either how to read putts or the best method of reading would be great!

I appreciate this video. I've been golfing for 15 years with a pretty bad grip, somehow still managed get down to about 10.2 handicap due to a ton of playing and focus in the last few years. Recently I decided to switch to interlock because everyone has told me forever that my grip is horrendous and Ineeded to switch, but it never seemed like a good time. Finally just committed to it, and it feels really good, but I've been coming away from rounds and practice sessions with an immense amount of pain in my pinky, like all the way up the side of the hand through the bone. I've been struggling to figure out whether I'm doing something wrong that's causing that pain, or if my hands just need time to adjust. I think I was probably jamming those fingers together like you said not to, and as a result, there was SO much pressure on that pinky, that every ball strike was sending a massive jolt through my pinky and the bones that run up the side of my hand. I'll make a concentrated effort now to stop doing that, and see if it helps with the pain through my pinky and hand. THANKS!

I used interlock grip for years and tried using the overlap grip and I gotta say overlapping feels way more comfortable and natural and feel like I have more control through my club release.

I have to align my club head at the toe of the club in order to hit the ball with the face of the club. Some how my swing pushes out an inch or so during the downswing. That’s my big problem. Suggestions?

I got a question not holding the grip related though... why when changing the grip you need to change the tape as well? Is it so it holds grip in place better or some other reason?

My set-up to my target needs help. There are times when lining up to target my body is not lined up correctly and when I hit the ball it goes straight where my body is lined up to. Not to target. I was told by a friend that my eyes are playing tricks on me. Hope that makes sense

Hi Matt, I just returned to the game in August of 2021 after about a 25 year layoff. I played when I was younger but found skydiving and golf took a backseat. I used to have a baseball grip but in my return decided to try the interlock. Not for me! I feel as you do I have more stability with the 10 finger grip. I know you have the teaching by video program via the app. I don’t have the disposable income to enroll in something like that at this time but do you have an option to view my setup, swing and release one time?
