I am an advocate of using the equalizer first and then the compressor. One uses the compressor to "lock" the sound into its final form. If we compress the sound and then equalize it, we basically "kill" the compression because the equalizer alters the volume of the sound (essentially the EQ is a volume tool). Additionally, the EQ will change the envelope of the sound, often losing its initial attack in most cases. EQ before the compressor, that's how it works for me.

You can get away with pretty extreme EQ moves more when you do it before compression, it tends to smooth things out. Like boosting the high end in a vocal before compressing can reduce or sometimes eliminate the need for processing that vocal with De-essing.

reasons why dynamic eq or multiband compressors(if you dont have dynamic eq available) are awesome first in chain, works wonders in live mixing too. usually on vocals i run that first then EQ to cut out some low mids if its a dynamic mic into a fast attack/release compressor to grab those peaks only, then run it into a slower attack/release compressor for overall compression/character. there's no right or wrong. if its sounds good it sound good! :)

I agree if you are doing corrective EQ (subtractive), it depends on the material when it is necessary to do it before or after. if the track has a big amount of dynamics and you need to level this, the compressor first be the call. But in vocal for example, sometimes the subtractive eq is the way to go first

The reason I prefer to EQ before compress and after I compress, 1st is corrective EQ (if needed), but then most good compressors will flavour the sound a bit. So I then add an extra EQ to make it sound beautiful.
@BBfanfun
@BBfanfun 5 ай бұрын
the advice is for SOFTWARE comp. the idea of EQ BEFORE comp stems from console design & older comps (HARDWARE). the process could bring out sibilance in the signal - not outstanding but just annoying enough (noise) when summed up. most insert points got fixed to post-EQ (on budget boards) more important - the advice was to EQ CUT before Comp & Boost after; yielding a "fuller" sound. but YMMV
@jas_bataille
@jas_bataille 5 ай бұрын
That's an interesting point but what says this can't happen with software? If I'm compressing then I'm changing the harmonics or a signal, in the box or not. Sibilance could be a consequence of that. It depends on so many factors that it's literally impossible to just say, "software compressor cannot produce sibilance". Yes they can - not from any circuit of course but depending on the source material and how it's manipulated, you can't rule that out. There really are no hard rules in mixing except the first and last thing you use eyes for is to check meters lol

For me it’s like this: I listen to the signal and if the dynamics annoy me I go to a compressor or the fader. If it’s the tone that annoys me, I got to an EQ or distortion. After that work from there.
@jas_bataille
@jas_bataille 5 ай бұрын
The fader is not gonna change the dynamics of the signal tho. It's only gonna change the dynamics of the song... meaning that the dynamics within the track between the lowest and highest peak remain the same. Regardless, fader balance should always be first, otherwise, you're just gonna waste time going back to correct EQ or comp you've done on a without enough information on the material.

Colt, this is a good education video that misses the mark. The problem is that you’re BOOSTING before compression which you should never do. You can, and probably should EQ before you compress but ONLY to eliminate/reduce frequencies that are affecting the compressor too much. E.g. even out the frequency response and then your compressor will react properly to the information you feed into it.

I’m only halfway through but this was a really interesting video. Here’s my thoughts (difficult to say if they’re relevant as my mixes aren’t great these days being out of practice) - you’re correct that using heavy additive EQ into a single band compressor will drastically affect the tone, transient response, character of the sound. Reductive EQ prior to compression is much more subtle. One of my old teachers (mixed Bruno Mars ++) said “why would you want to bring up the level of all that junk you don’t want?” Some of my best mixes were gainstaged into multiband compression and then EQ’d pre compression. Old af beat but searching for “seasho grind hard beat” shows one of these mixes. Obviously still an amateur on my end and still need to finish the video, but I think a lot of this comes down to “it depends.”

But on Things where I’m looking for maximum sonic quality, I’m still on the Kirchoff

Finally someone who talks about why doing corrective EQ first on everything is not gonna work. I am tired of every single person who ever watched a 5 min video about EQ telling everyone the only thing you should with it is subtractive. According to them Chris Lord-Alge or Sylvia Massy are horrible engineers... gimme a break!!! Also, sometimes you shouldn't EQ or compress at all. Rarely on a single track, but sometimes you get lucky and decide to correct or level something that came just right!

ok raising the low end on the bass eq does effect the midrange... you are basically turning down every frequency except for the low end, or what ever you are boosting, and vice verse. if you put pro q in the auto gain mode it will sound similar as putting the compressor after the eq tone wise, because the compressor is helping you hear the eq move without the volume difference, which is what auto gain is also trying to do. obviously there will be differences because auto gain is not a compressor, but the claim in the beginning of the video that when you boost the low end that the mid range is not changing AT ALL is kind of misleading, because in reality doing a cut move on everything other than the low end is the same thing as boosting the low end. the stuff about how boosting certain frequencies changes how the compressor reacts is true tho, just it makes more sense to do it with the side chaining feature if thats what your mainly after. its just super important to listen to everything you do at equal gain and i think thats important for everyone to keep in mind while mixing. i know colt knows this and i think he even mentioned it in an eq video a long time ago but i guess was mis spoken in this video regarding that part.

But i never do any big ea boost ever just minor adjustments. I learned from a few master mix engineers to do everything in stages light adjustments.

@@ColtCapperrune I think so lol! I meant to say it would solve the issue for when you eq. When I used compression more in my tracks (now I use more saturator instead) I usually would first use an eq to cut frequencies, then compress, then an eq to boost frequencies (to accentuate) But for live sounds compression is probably better, Im talking edm music. thanks for the great video!👍

Colt, your gain staging is at least super scary... Bleeding both on in and output. What the hell?

Fab filter, plug-ins are 64 bit architecture. You couldn’t clip them audibly if you tried. All that meter does is show the level, but there is no sonic harm in running these plug-ins ultra hot as long as the plug-ins following it can handle.

@@ColtCapperrune Surely aware fabfilter plugs are 64 bit and can handle the heat, it's just my housekeeping nature that shouts inside. #lovegainstagingallplugsintherow

Honestly, this doesn't even matter because every speaker is different. Magic is in the midrange anyway but if you're listening to this on shitty speakers with barely any bass, it won't matter. Also has everything to do with how your factory EQ is set in your car or home stereo. To each their own, but I think EQing before or after, really won't make a difference.
