What I like about this episode is that not only did the Scarecrow get a visual design change, but also in his plans. Instead of in increasing fear, he does the opposite by removing it entirely. That shows that he has learned over the course of his career.
@Elhvir
@Elhvir Жыл бұрын
To be fair, removing fear is as effective of a method of destroying society as is increasing it. Like we saw with Bruce's employee, without any sort of fear for cause and effect, people will literally act on impulses. Even if one doesn't want to hurt someone, lack of fear for negative effects would make people do bad stuff. Like here, he saw a woman he got hots for, and just went for it. Imagine if said lady had no fear of what would happen if she smacked daylights out of him. Then in comes a security guard who wants to get in on her good side too, and without fear of effect, would almost murder said man. And the chain continues like this. Now, apply that chain to entire city. Everything would collapse in hours.

Fear is exactly what keeps Batman in check. It's what keeps ALL Humanity in check. Fear of consequences. Fear of loss. Fear of themselves. Not all fear is the same, but it's all a societal limiter. As long as it is kept under control. In balance. There is a reason why those who lack empathy are either overburdened or unburdened by fear.

It was a very nice detail making Robin the one who manages to prevent Batman from killing the Scarecrow and return him to normal. Apart from serving as a sidekik, the different Robins have served him numerous times as a reminder of his moral principles. In fact, their bond has sometimes literally saved the day. For example, in a 1986 comic, Batman manages to avoid succumbing to the effects of the fear toxin by having his greatest fear overcome the one caused by the toxin, with his biggest concern being losing Jason Todd.

Two problems the writers got wrong with the subway chase sequence Subway cars have a "dead man's switch" where the operator has to hold a switch down (or a handle in place) to operate the train. If the operator has a heart attack or another serious problem and is disabled the brakes automatically activate. At the end of every subway line, there are mechanical trips that activate the train's brakes to prevent the train from running off the end of the line.

Really love this Scarecrow design and it’s a shame we never got another Scarecrow-centric episode (Over The Edge doesn’t count). Hell, Scarecrow and The Riddler were supposed to be in the final season of JLU as part of the Legion of Doom homage, but the infamous Bat-Embargo kept them off the table. We never got Scarecrow in a prominent role (tho a decent recurring role in the Nolan films) outside the comics until the incredible Arkham games with some of the greatest designs for Scarecrow since…well, THIS episode! Also, special shout-out to Injustice 2 for making Scarecrow a playable character, voiced to perfection by the legendary Robert Englund, probably the ONLY way to top Jeffrey Coombs’ vocal performance.

The theory I heard that can explain this goes that the reason Bruce feels so cold is because he's having a burnout or the toll of being the gaurdian of Gotham is starting to get to him. Bruce started out to end the mob but eventually things got out of hand when Joker showed up then Man-Bat, Scarecrow and ect started to pop up. It begs the question how long can he stay tge same? How long can he care for Harvey when he watches him kill folks on the drop of a coin? How long can he read of all the people that Phantasm will kill for cash without realizing she's a nothing but a killer. How muh can he stomach knowing created The Joker or how much can Fear gas can he take and have his folks yell at him before he gets numb to it all? I think this can explain that Bruce is just overworked and his getting over this Batman thing but he knows that if he quits it's the apocolypse for Gotham.

Jeffery Combs also did the voice for Brainiac in the video game Injustice 2. Scarecrow is a new character in the game too but to my joy, voiced by Robert Englund.

Alot of the shows redesigns were more hits than misses if you ask me, The Joker being the biggest example. But you ask me? Scarecrow's new look is 100 percent way more terrifying than he's looked before, and I absolutely love it. #Fear

one of the re-designs i liked both in look & voice/character, plus it shows that Scarecrow learns from his defeats, choosing to weaponize fear in other ways besides just showing someone their worst nightmare/thing they fear most

There’s this little moment when Batman is approaching the Scarecrow from behind on the train, and you hear this deep, evil, guttural choir chanting. It’s for a few seconds. But it’s terrifying. Utterly terrifying. It elevates Scarecrow from potentially just another villain to a force of unknown, an eldritch evil. Something from Night on Bald Mountain.

I agree they could have explore more the idea of Batman without fear, however the fact it was short might have been the point of the episode. Without fear no one is able to survive because the person no longer fears death or has covern for his or her life, something that episode proves with Batman almost crashing the bat-plane in building as well almost dying with Scarecrow.

Loved Scarecrow's new look in New Adventures. I remember watching him knock out Bruce from behind in the shadows and getting that first ever glimpse of his new terrifying visage. "Pff, yeah, it's Scarecrow, go figu- WHOAH, WHAT THE HELL?!?!"

Speaking of going off the deep end, in the first episode of batman beyond as Bruce was forced to use a handgun in order to protect himself and Bunny Freeland from a goon. Who mind you attempted to beat Bruce to death and who knows what he would've happened to Freeland. This was a act of desperation with Bruce's injuries from the assault and his heart related illnesses, Bruce learned he could no longer be the dark knight. Especially when he came close to using the one thing that took his parents away.

Out of all of the Scarecrow episodes that we've had, 'Never Fear' was the most unique in terms of it's concept and execution. A gas that can take away people's fears and make them become reckless was very unusual but it made for a great story with the idea of Batman not being afraid to kill made it even more interesting. I loved that Robin was the one who had to stop Batman trying to take lives, i would have preferred if Nightwing was the one who had to restrain Batman but i understand that they wanted to more establish Tim Drake as the new Robin and see what situations he could handle. I wasn't completely sold on a lot of the redesigns but the one they came up with for Scarecrow was fantastic, it's my all time favourite and he looked like something out of a Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie. A brilliant episode and wished we got to see more of Scarecrow in TNBA, he is one of the best Batman villains ever. Side note: i wish they explored this concept further in the Justice League animated series where Batman could have suffered a relapse from Scarecrow's toxin and have a situation where Superman & the whole team have to deal with an out of control dark knight who isn't afraid to kill.

I have a theory about why his voice got lower: because of the pressure on his neck from that broken noose,it made it so his voice cannot go any higher. Jake "The Snake" Roberts' voice cannot go very high because of multiple blows to the neck,so it's not too farfetched for that same thing to happen for Scarecrow.

It's been said in the comics that Batman's no-kill stance has an element of fear to it, as in, he is afraid that he makes once exception he would not be able to stop himself.

The thing that I’ve always loved about the new scarecrow, besides the new creep design and voice is the idea if it’s a costume or not, crane was a short and skinny guy but this one is tall and with large inhuman shoulders and the head is perfectly ambiguous if it’s a sack over the shirt or if the shirt is torn off and it’s revealing his skin Who knows, maybe his gas mutates him, maybe he’s always leaking gas (no pun intended) to make him look more intimidating or it’s just a design choice with no real logic behind

Jeffery Combes is also a Star Trek favourite, playing numerous characters, but most prominently the various clones of Weyoun in DS9, and Shran in Enterprise. He was also the Rat King in the 2012 TMNT series.

Oh man, this episode had everything for me: awesome action, amazing animation by TMS, one of the raddest redesigns in the whole DCAU, and a relevant moral that plays an important role. Fear is rarely depicted in a positive way outside of Inside Out, and it should get more support. Yes, fear is often responsible for prejudice, chaos, and paranoia and can make us lose confidence, but it also helps us recognize danger, forces us to use our heads, and prevents us from acting on our worst instincts. If not for fear, I would've caused a car crash on my first driving test or persisted to shove my hand down an impossibly narrow crevice.

Henry Polick II did a good job as Scarecrow during the original 85 episodes, but this right here is the definitive version of the character for me. His redesign is easily the best in the series, Jeffrey Combs delivers a truly terrifying performance, and the menace this character brings to Gotham City is emphasized greatly by just his two episodes here in TNBA

I'm kinda disappointed you didn't bring up the potential backstories the writers/designers came up with explaining scarecrows new design. One of them states that Crane was actually HANGED FOR HIS CRIMES and the noose snapped at the last second. Crane thought he died that day, and from that moment forward, believed himself to be a ghost, haunting the streets of Gotham.

I wish Jeffrey Combs could have voiced Scarecrow in many more episodes. To my mind, this was THE voice of Scarecrow. I'm glad he got work as Question, but man I hope that the reboot series gets him back in for the Scarecrow with the same design.

In the Superman episode Knight Time, where Bruce is kidnapped by Brainiac and Superman poses as Batman to aid Robin in finding him, Robin shows Supes the message Bruce left to throw off suspicion and Robin says “he’s smiling, he never smiles! Something MUST be wrong.” I think that really nails home why Bruce post-BTAS doesn’t work. Arguably it can be part of the whole “Bruce is the mask” mentality but Bats is getting kinda lazy with it, like he’s this close to killing off Bruce Wayne so he can be Batman 24/7.

I think that's point of Batman's character arc in TNBA. This season takes places years after BTAS, Batman has spend years fighting crime that is affecting him mentality, to the point Bruce Wayne is becoming just a shell for Batman. As consequence he becomes more darker and brooding, resulting in allies like Dick Grayson leaving him.

Pertaining to your comment on Batman's unwillingness to kill it is centered around fear but not the fear of killing but rather the fear of losing control and comparing himself to be no different from those he hunts. That's how I've always seen it anyway

This new Scarecow's version here is better than BTAS. The voice of Scarecrow is a stuff of nightmares. This episode gives a new point of view about fear. It is sometimes fear that makes us humans. Without that sense of fear, Bruce Wayne is a merciless brutal monster. I like how the new series showed us some darkness within Bruce Wayne. He almost crossed the line he made for himself. My best scene is the Crocodiles battle.
