My father was issued one of these 53 vehicles when he was doing a survey for a dam in the Hunter Valley...in Australia! It was Right Hand Drive , of course. When it was replaced years later it was still like new. I would buy this one in a flash if I could get it home...LHD or not. I hope it finds a good home.

In my seventies myself, I have owned or worked on many Studebakers'... loved the fact that if you needed to work on the dash wires, you lift the hood and it was right there on a small metal shelf .. a part of the firewall. Nice rig, know many of their issues to look for. It deserves a modern gear ratio rear end. Those overdrive transmissions were problematic. Plus the overdrive had its own problems. I was a wrench on heavy equipment since nineteen fifty seven or eight ish as dad took me out to the shop and said make yourself to home as it is going to be for a good ten hour day... seven days a week.

My father bought a new Studebaker truck in 1953. He said he liked the styling but it was very unreliable. I have dim kindergarten age memories of riding in it from Kingman, Arizona to Las Vegas, Nevada at night. Desert people did a lot of night driving then because there was no air conditioning. I remember that in the later 1950s road speeds were around 55 MPH on the narrow two-laners. And you had to stop at a bar every couple hours to have a drink and find out about road conditions ahead : -)

to figure out the rear end ratio... Jack it up or get on a lift. be in neutral mark the tire at a specific place and the drive shaft too... have a buddy monitor the drive shaft as you turn the wheel 1 full revolution. your buddy counts the driveshaft. if the driveshaft turns 4x to 1 wheel turn then your ratio is 4 to 1
I was 4 when this truck was new. My grandfather worked at Stude. from '43 to '56. Growing up in So. Bend I seen many Studes! The pick up trucks were never very common compared to the passenger cars.

that is amazing! I personally wish I could own this truck but its not allowed, my bank account says no!... Hopefully this video brings back some amazing memories

You don't have to open the pumpkin to determine ratio. Just jack up the rear end, mark the driveshaft, mark the tire, turn the wheel, count revolutions of wheel and driveshaft, do the math.

Studebaker made some of the most beautiful pickups ever. They were built better than the gm ford and dodge trucks. The 40-41 coupe express were probably the sexiest trucks ever made. I’d kill to have this

No speed limits until the 60's ?? That is incorrect. I grew up in the 40's / 50's and there were definitely speed limits then. I had a 51 Studebaker and sorry I ever sold it.
