Another fact that makes this song even more awesome. La Bamba is a Mexican dance song in Spanish. But Ritchie Valens didn't really speak Spanish. He had to memorize the lyrics.

Correction. : he wasn't a native speaker but he knew the language fairly well. One of the things the movie didn't get right. He didn't speak fluent Spanish, but could understand his mother and speak a fair Spanglish.

A movie was made about Richie and the actor was Lou Diamond Philips. The band singing in the movie is Los Lobos, who covered the song and made it their own. Lou was great in the movie and everyone paid homage to the original artist. Great reaction as always. Cheers from Canada

Another super talented artist that was taken too soon. My favorite song by Mr Valens is La Bamba. He perished in the plane crash that also took Buddy Holly and the Big Bopper. Chronicled as "The day the music died' in American Pie by DonMclean.i suggest that song as a reaction.Peace

This song was recorded thru Delphi records in 1958 as a "b" side to Donna. Richard Steven Valenzuela was 17 years old and still in high school when he was signed to his record label. Sadly his musical career was only 8 months long as he died in a plane crash 5 miles north of clear lake Iowa on 2/3/1959 along with Buddy Holly, the Big Bopper and pilot Roger Peterson.

La Bamba is an old Mexican sailors song but he covered it into a rock and roll. We don't even know what a "Bamba" is, honestly, because it seems to be old pirates lingo, but for the song it seems to reference sort of a dance.

This song went to #22 on the Billboard charts in 1958. And it ranked #345 on the Rolling Stones Magazine top 500 songs in Rock and Roll history. His other song which was the flipside was" Oh Donna" which went to #3 on billboard also in 1958. Glad to see your doing another Ritchie Valens song. Please react to "Oh Donna" and "OOH' My Head." Note: Ritchie himself could not speak Spanish. He was born in Tacoma California in 1941. He had to learn the song, and its pronunciation by doing it over and over again. With a Ticano Rock and Roll beat. "La Bamba was a Mexican dance." The rest as they say is history.

Guys, there's a song by Mac Davis done in the late 70's or early 80's called Hooked On Music. It talks about how a young kid from Lubbock reacts to the early days of Rock & Roll. Even the music is a throwback to that bygone era. Give it a listen.

Richie Valens died tragically at 17, only 8 months into his music career, yet look at how much great music this young man created! I often wonder, how he would have continued to influence the evolution/progression of rock and roll over the generations. FANTASTIC movie about his life, La Bamba which is definitely worth a watch! Great soundtrack, too!

Nice, have y'all even did Don McLeans "American Pie" yet. It is about the plane crash that killed Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and the Big Bopper. "The Day the Music Died" A lot of hidden references in the song including Elvis, Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, Hell Angels, The Beatles, Charles Manson, and many others. The day the music died was the day the America Lost its innocence. The song is from 1971, 12 years after the plane crash. The Vietnam War was still going on as well.

The movie about his life is titled "La Bamba". It's one of just a few movies that makes me cry every time I see it, even if I just catch the tail end of the movie. So sad how he died, not only so young and at the start of his popularity, but dying in a plane crash of all things. He had always been afraid of flying because of bad recurrent dreams, and avoided it until that fateful night. You'll have to watch the movie to see why he boarded that plane that night. It's well worth watching.

"The name of the dance, which has no direct English translation, is presumably connected with the Spanish verb bambolear, meaning "to shake" or perhaps "to stomp". A traditional huapango song, "La Bamba" is often played during weddings in Veracruz , where the bride and groom perform the accompanying dance." Wikipedia. This is obviously a rocked up version.

I was 9-10yrs when the biopic La Bamba staring Lou Diamond Phillips came out. I still remember breaking the song La Bamba do & translating it to english. I just can't remember if it was for either elementary school Spanish lessons or a Cub Scouts project. I do remember it was with the help of a classmates mom who was a native speaker of Spanish. She taught Spanish lessons in our schools a few times a week & her son was in my Cub Scouts troop. I remember it was an old folk song about a dance (Bamba). The narrator was hesitant to do the dance (Bamba) as he was inexperienced & inhibited. The line... Yo no soy marinero, Yo no soy marinero, soy capitan, soy capitan, soy capitan. Translates... I'm not a sailor, I'm not a sailor, I'm a captain, I'm a captain, I'm a captain. Basically saying he's a refined captain uncomfortable with letting loose not a sailor on shore leave setting aside his inhibitions drinking & dancing. I believe that's the gist.

This was my introduction to Spanish, I was only 5 years old. After that I wanted to know more Spanish, and That's what I did, I was hooked. I have respect for the originator of this song, but the first version I heard was Neil Diamond's, so I'm a little bias.

'"Para bailar "La Bamba", se necesito una Polka de gracia..." which means "To dance "La Bamba" you need a graceful polka...." La Bamba is a type of dance popular in Northern Mexico in the late 1950s; however, it was just a folk song but Valenzuela made it into an American Rock n Roll hit to which young people were singing and dancing along.

If you want to hear some Spanish rock and roll, you should check out the Mexican group, Maná. Their song, "Clavado en un bar (Hammered in a bar)," really rocks. They also have some nice rock ballads like "Rayando El Sol" and "Vivir Sin Aire." They also have rock songs that incorporate more traditionally Latin elements, like "Perdido En Un Barco."

Selena recorded her version too. Fun fact about Selena's version, it was the first song that put her on the Billboards at no.19 on hot Latin billboard tracks of 1987. Selena was 16. Her energy was amazing! Please react to her live performance! kzbin.info/www/bejne/p16ukoCvidWqgpY

Hi you two, Richie and Buddy Holly and The Big Bopper passed on 2-3-1959 when they where in a plane crash. A movie was made called "La Bamba" staring Lou Diamond Phillips and the song in the movie was performed by Los Lobos which I played with them in the 80s

Ritchie Valens, not his original name, was the man that proved that Mexicans could rock. Check out the version by Los Lobos, the version used for the movie. And I'll simply say as a capital W Irish white boy who doesn't speak Spanish, I know every word to this song, and can Karaoke it blindfolded, because its a personal favorite.

Imagine their shocks if they found this was an African wedding song. Mexico imported more Africans than the US. Bamba is a tribe in the Congo Africa. The Costa chica in Mexico is still very African. In short la Bamba is an African wedding song. Yo no soy marinero soy Capitan -i am not a sailor I'm a captain. Meaning I will be faithful. It's a wedding promise.

The lyrics and translation are roughly: First verse: Para bailar la bamba To dance the bamba Para bailar la bamba se necesita una poca de gracia To dance the bamba one needs a little grace Una poca de gracia pa' mí, pa' ti, ya arriba y arriba A little grace for me, for you, now raise the roof and raise the roof (arriba literally means up but the usage is more like raise the roof in English) Y arriba, y arriba, por ti seré And raise the roof and raise the roof, I'll be for you Por ti seré, por ti seré I'll be for you, I'll be for you Second verse: Yo no soy marinero I'm not a sailor Yo no soy marinero, soy capitán I'm not a sailor, I'm a captain Soy capitán, soy capitán I'm a captain, I'm a captain

Finally! A proper reaction from the real artist. Many choose the movie version to react to who is actually Los Lobos doing a cover of the song. Thank you for your reaction!
