He died in the same plane crash as The Big Bopper and Buddy Holly which spawned the song American Pie by Don Mclean (1971) which in turn spawned the song Killing Me Softly by Roberta Flack (1972), (original not the beatbox version) which describes the experience of watching Don Mclean sing American Pie. It's all connected. Thanks for another great reaction.

Love this reaction. He was so important to music in such a short little time. First Mexican American musician to hit the USA charts, plus with Chicano flare. He was a rock pioneer that had all the cards for success stacked against him during his era. Other Mexican artist like Carlos Santana were heavily inspired him and provided hope to be successful. Valens only recorded a dozen songs or so in 18 months before he passed... that's all we have and yet his legacy is huge. Says so much about what his accomplishment meant to people since the volume of his professional work was small. Definitely check out the movie of his life with Lou Diamond Phillips portraying him off you haven't already.

Richie was only 17. Buddy Holly was tried of the drafty cold conditions on the tour bus and hired a charter plane to take his band (consisting of Waylon Jennings, Tommy Allsup, and Carl Bunch) and him to the next town. The Big Bopper had the flu, so Waylon Jennings gave him his seat. Richie had a bad cold and flipped a coin with Tommy Allsup; Richie ironically won. Thus the infamous "The Day the Music Died". Waylon Jennings (the Outlaw) went on to become a major Country singer and part of "The Outlaws": Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Jessi Colter, and Tompall Glaser.

Richie was still a teen when he died alongside Buddy Holly (aged 22) and the big bopper (28), in the plane that came down at Clear Lake Iowa. To add to the sadness, and loss, Eddie Cochran who was a friend of Richie and Buddy, died in a car travelling between gigs near Chippenham England just a year later. He was just 21 when we lost him. Some fine old rock and rollers, and great talents lost too young. Far far too young. Quite the musical legacy they left behind for us to enjoy though. A joy to watch you dancing to the old classics. Have fun, and a great week. Be well.

He was just a couple months shy of his 18th birthday when he was in the plane crash with Buddy Holly and Big Bopper. I’ve seen footage of him on the Ed Sullivan show performing “Come On, Let’s Go”. (Highly recommend it!) If you would like to see a biopic on him, Lou Diamond Phillips played as him in the movie “La Bamba”. (It has some rough moments, but is overall a good movie.) The day of the crash is known as “The Day the Music Died” and was referenced in Don McLean’s “American Pie”. Ironically, Valens wasn’t supposed to go on the plane but beat the roadie/ backup Waylon Jennings at a coin toss. Jennings got stuck riding on the tour bus, which had no heat and kept having things go wrong and Valens “won” the chance to ride in a plane.

Crazy that you did this song today. I was hanging out with the writer, director, music director, and some actors in Labamba last weekend. They are my best friends in-laws. I also hung out with Bob, Richie's older brother, a handful of times before his death in 2018. One thing I don't see mentioned is that Richie's name was Valenzuela, but he was told he had to change it or he wouldn't be able to sell records or perform in some venues.

I recommend you listen to 2 GUITAR instrumentals - “!fast freight” was done in one take - “ Malagueña “ was the follow up to La Bamba - both show his ferocious masterful guitar playing , a self taught guitarist , he had an angelic tenor with several Levels as are heard on “ Little Girl”. Best of luck !!! Louisv

Donna Ludwig ( his girlfriend ) is who Richie wrote his hit Donna for. There is a song Called the Three Stars recorded by Tommy Dee in 1959...It is a song dedicated to Richie Valens, Buddy Holly and The Big Bopper...I still have my 45 RPM single I play now and then. Richie 17 years old, Buddy Holly 22 years old, and The Big Bopper 28 years old, were killed in a plane crash. The incident was the main idea for Don McLean's song The Day The Music Died.Despite having his most popular hit with "La Bamba", an adaptation of a Mexican folk song with a rock rhythm and beat, Valens did not speak Spanish.Holly's band members Tommy Allsup and Waylon Jennings were supposed to ride on the plane that crashed, but according to several reports, Richardson (The Big Bopper) sick and convinced Jennings to let him take his place, and Valens won against Allsup in a coin toss for a seat on the plane.

The reason it captured the culture is because the writer/director, Luis Valdez, and his brother Daniel Valdez who was the musical director and played Richie's uncle, grew up as children of migrant workers. Before making the movie they were part of the United Farmworkers Union movement with Cesar Chavez and would put on short plays to bring light to the workers struggles. A really good family that I'm lucky enough to be friends with.

In February 1959 while riding in a small plane to the next town in a concert tour The Winter Carnival,Richie Valens 17, Jules Richardson The Big Bopper 27 and Buddy Holly 23 and the pilot crashed and died soon after takeoff. A 13 year old found out about the death of his heroes the next morning while delivering papers. 12 years later now a singer/songwriter Don McLean would immortalize the event and the major music, cultural.political events that followed he named it American Pie and it immediately became one the greatest songs of all time.
