You'd be surprised how many people jump right into a repair like this without checking the obvious things like jamming or the breaker. Even though we don't do plumbing we've had a number of service calls for small things that can be done in minutes with no repair or trade knowledge required. That said we also get a lot of calls about replacing water damaged sink bases from improperly installed disposals so thank you for posting this! 🙏

Hey Brad, thanks for the video. So most dishwasher drain pipes require a high-loop (basically loop the hose behind the disposal to be higher than the sink). This helps to prevent backwash from the disposal back into the dishwasher drain hose.
@GarrettCrosgrove4 күн бұрын
Some dishwashers have it built in to the back of the dishwasher, but yes at some point the dishwasher drain pipe should be higher than the dishwasher drain port.
@LutherBuilds4 күн бұрын
@@GarrettCrosgrove Yeah I noticed this on the back of our new dishwasher when I installed ours so there was no need to loop it up higher under the sink.
@javiervigil25114 күн бұрын
An air gap should be installed to prevent the sink from backing up into the dishwasher, regardless because the loop is still below the waterline in the sink. I've come in contact with a sink backing up into the dishwasher, even with the loop, usually around the holidays 😁.
@OneWildTurkey3 күн бұрын
@@javiervigil2511 I've suffered with those air gaps for a long time but just haven't taken the time to remove them. Yet. I've never had the sink back up in the DW, but the DW line would get plugged and back up on the countertop while the sink was still draining just fine. It hasn't happened as much since we changed the brand of DW soap, but I'm waiting to see if it's gonna happen again.
@javiervigil25113 күн бұрын
@OneWildTurkey I understand that I'm having that same problem but the reason mine isn't working correctly is because the line from the air gap to the disposal is to long. I have to get the hose that can be cut, the kits home Depot and Lowe's sell are not great.

Excellent video, Brad. I've been loving your home renovation, bathroom and kitchen projects. Another thing to look out for is if your disposal is vibrating, one of the teeth in it could be stuck. Sometimes a small piece of metal or even a bone can get lodged under the teeth and cause the disposal to be out of balance. This happened to ours a few months ago and I had to take a flat head screwdriver to free it up. The teeth on ours spin on their own and are attached with a single screw. I'm not quite sure how I figured this out. It acted like there was something stuck in the disposal causing the vibration.
@mattelias7214 күн бұрын
100% agree with you - this has happened to me, too. Nothing better than sticking a flat-tip screwdriver down into your disposal and 'jiggling it around' - trip the breaker. I'd also add that it's a sign you're heading toward a replacement in the future - at least it was for me.

Have carried (at least) one of those offset wrenches in my tool pouch for over 30 years. Invaluable tool to have on service calls. Wish they all had that. A real PITA to unclog the ones that don't. And in my over 30 years of maintenance work, the #1 thing I've dug out of clogged disposals: aluminum soda can pop top tabs. Magnet is a good idea, but won't stop those. Why people take them off the cans is beyond me. But, it helps keeps me in business! LoL. Enjoy your videos!

Haha. Our first Thanksgiving together, my wife innocently made the mistake of putting pumpkin peel down the sink with a disposal in our first apartment. That's when I discovered the allen key screw on the bottom of the disposal. This was before Google too, so I don't know how I figured it out.

where was this video 7 years ago!? i fumbled through replacing mine with a chonky (but very quiet!) insinkerator (evolution select something, no clue on hp, probably whatever was available at the home despot that day) after coming back from vacation to a dead disposal. did not know about the reset switch on the side or manually moving it with a hex key. might have saved some money back then but the old one sounded like it was grinding its bearing(s?) every time i used it so it was time for a replacement anyways
@GongaDuck5 күн бұрын
Great tips, and I would add that it's rather inexpensive to purchase a new under sink pipe kit to go with the disposal install. I would just replace it all in case there's a grease build-up in the piping. It's just a great inexpensive preventative measure since you're already in there doing work.

On test out fill both sides of sink with water to top pull stopper on disposal while holding hand on top of non disposal side stopper then turn on disposal to see if no leaks under the pressure of water being pushed through drain …. Also great way to initially tackle a clogged sink

Very interesting, thank you for sharing. I've one question though: why should a diswasher dispose into the garbage disposal? Why not directly to the sewer pipe itself?
@mattelias7214 күн бұрын
Because it ensures that food chunks from the dishwasher that make it past the filter get ground eventually. Also, running hot, soapy water thru a disposal is a good thing... it basically human-proofs things.
@Cdshakes4 күн бұрын
May i recommend the "focus lock" feature on your cell phone's camera? Every time you set up a shot, you can lock the focus. This way if the focus is on the disposer itself, every time your hand comes into frame, the camera doesn't refocus on the moving object (your hand). I see this so often with KZbin channels.

Brad, I'd agree that disposal swaps are doable... but still daunting. Thanks for noting the hex key check - that is a thing, and they're usually 1/4" hex. While that will sometimes fix your unit, it can also be a sign you're coming up on replacement. Here's a semi-useful suggestion: I saw a dude use an old scissor-style car jack to raise the disposal rather than manhandle 50lbs up to the collar. Your milage may vary depending on your sink configuration, but you could also use wood wedges under a board. Some of us have worn out our shoulders.

Great job on showing how relatively simple replacement of an existing disposal can be for a home owner with moderate mechanical skills. Far too many home owners have been ripped off by plumbers on this very simple task. A short safety message though. You should never store any product containing bleach near ammonia. If they accidently mix, due to spillage or leaking containers, the resulting cloramine gas can cause the following Respiratory problems, including coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath Eye, nose, and throat irritation Skin irritation and burns Headaches and dizziness. In severe cases, chloramine gas exposure can lead to life-threatening respiratory failure. Best practice is to store them widely separated from one another.

Plumbers putty is an inferior product. It will eventually harden and crack and allow some moisture into the putty. I've had to cut out drains that were rusty and frozen. I always use clear silicone, especially on stainless steel sinks. An easy way to clean the squeeze out is to use a spray bottle with alcohol. Spray it down good and wipe it clean. The silicone doesn't have to cure, and the sink can be used right away. When testing the drains, always plug the bowls and fill them up. The weight of the water will show leaks that just running the faucet may not. I do like the bag trick. Good thinking.
