In February it usually snows in Germany. It can be very nice when there is snow everywhere and then high pressure weather sets in. Then everyone wants to go out and enjoy the snow. In December, on the other hand, the days are dark, and Christmas lights are hanging everywhere. In the past few summers it has rained too little, the farmers hope for rain in winter so that it can grow again next year. But the gray weather is a time when you just have to persevere.

My tips to get out of the expat bubble and to become a friend to Germans and not just an acquaintance are: 1. learn the German language 2. join a German club (Verein) with features your interests. A German saying is that when more than three people meet in Germany who have the same interests they found a club. Officially you need seven people to register a club (eingetragener Verein). There are more than 700,000 registered clubs in Germany which feature various interest or hobbies.

Something really cool about Germany, including Berlin, is the coffee "to go" culture, where many people, instead of wasting plastic with the non disposable "to go" mugs, they bring their own mugs from home. You should do it too :)

Human Resource practices are very different in the other parts of Germany. Berlin is way more cosmopolitan - as a unternehmensberater that happens to work across Germany, Europe and Australia - many traditional German organisations have very outdated HR recruitment practices where they focus on tasks and not outcome.

I already know for a long time now a few German words like Kindergarten, Gesundheit, Schadenfreude, Über, auf Wiedersehen. English is a Germanic language to begin with and many other words are practically identical. Plus I'm a classical Musik lover and J.S. Bach is like the King of Musik. All on the comments who can answer or help me, please do so, hilf mir! So my issue is this: I am frustrated because I have not pursued college education fully yet, I would want to, but I haven't discovered the career for me yet. This generates a huge problem because I want to immigrate to Germany. Since (from what I can tell) you need a reason to immigrate to Germany, having an employment offer being one of them, I do not know how to go about this situation since whatever job I apply to for the most part I don't have experience in or education in a related field for a given job opportunity. All I know is that I want to live in Germany, and look forward to surrounding and integrating myself into the German culture, but my process in getting accepted will have the hiccup of finding a job opportunity. Thanks to all that can help.

Absolutely not! Age plays a big factor in Germany. Germans will tell you that. How many people over say 45 or 50 do you have in your company? I lived in Germany a long time when I was younger. I have relatives there I speak advanced German and I had interviews online with people who liked me and over 30 years experience in IT and yet they always went with some Russian or Indian guy who was in his late twenties - early thirties. Always, always! I had people who worked inside the companies tell me that even though HR can't say that, part of it is because it's just sort of the traditional German thing; you have one job your whole life so someone who's had several jobs is looked at with suspicion. It also has to do with how much they have to pay you by law. It is cheaper to pay a foreigner who doesn't speak German,l then to pay someone with the experience the required amount by law. I tried for 5 years and I finally said, f*** you Germany. I live nearby. I can always visit whenever I want.

I work in IT as well. I started working with 24, moved into another company with 53, changed again with 55 and 58. The important point was, that my level and type of employment changed as well. I started as a programmer and ended as an expert in a very small field. That way it worked.

On the first change my salary dropped to 70% (still enough), next change brought it down another 20% (close to a problem), did some freelancing in between und eventually the last change brought it up to 140% of my former top salary. It was very much depending on the roles I filled.

@@wora1111 Can I bother you with a few questions? I'm currently in my mid 30s and am a "Middle+" Software Developer on the verge of Senior, and I'd like to move to Germany before I'm 40. The main problems I have are: I have an unrelated university degree, this is my 2nd career which I started at 30, and I live in a developing country (not Russia but close and worse). Also, I'm AFAB and not cis. With all of those disadvantages in mind, is there any way to "tweak" my career\competence to make me marketable for German workforce? I'm more interested in Software Architecture than Development tbh but I'm not sure I'd be "welcome" in the field, not to mention I have a snowball's chance in Hell of getting job experience as a Software Architect where I live, or remotely for that matter.

@@kaworunagisa4009 I worked most of my life in small/middle -sized, privately owned companies. When I hired new people *I* would look for somebody which either had had some understanding of the subject or knew and acknowledge that he (or she) that he did not. I would prefer people that understated their knowledge rather than try to impress me (it never worked). I personally dislike buzz words and prefer example of solutions to real world problems (like what problems you had to overcome in the user interface of xyz to make it easy to handle). Most if not all of my employees started as a developer. After a few years in our business they might qualify as a software architect - but that required a lot of experience with our existing solutions that may have been written (and still supported) 5-10 years ago. Being middle-sized I would expect you to speak some German (I would do part of the interview inn German to get an impression of your level) and I would expect you to convince me, that your German would improve in the next months, because in a middle sized company our daily language would be German and you would be expected to interact with colleagues and customers in that language. BTW: Most of these jon offers would probably only be given in German, so you would need to be able to read this. And I would expect you to live in Germany and with constant contact with my other developers to get to know them and understand their way of thinking. At least at the beginning, later you may move wherever you want. As I understand you, your current wages are lower than most starter wages in Germany, so I would try to learn some German (A2 should be doable) and apply as a developer. Rather downplay the depth of your knowledge but allow for some information in your application, that shows, that you also did go into more depth before. If you have more questions, contact me at write-to-me@use.startmail.com (only valid 5 days)

@@DianaVerry I've been through that. You are young and beautiful. All doors are open for you. Count yourself lucky. Companies want young people because they are more flexible. Older people have family and don't want to move across Germany (or even further) every couple of years. Companies prefer top notch people with a university degree even for basic jobs (VW in Wolfsburg for example). They can do that because there are more than enough people outside their property searching for a job. Berlin has an unemployment quote of 10.5%. Talk to some of them (maybe record it on video).

To go hardcore with Germany, come here in late fall and stay for the winter. Experience weeks and weeks of missing sunlight, with the absence of color all around you and a cold climate that can be challenging mentally. This is interrupted on the other hand by four weeks of Christmas time full of color and light and and fine scents. It is the worst of times, it is the best of times. Oh, and there's alcohol. ^^

@dnocturn84

It depends on your bachelor degree and the university you've been to. Unfortunately, you'll have to check that for each possible German university individually, if they recognize your degree and if you can continue with your master there. There is no simple answer and entry limitations vary. Some universities will also offer additional semesters to bring students up to speed, when their bachelor degree varies from the necessary level. There are options for international students with lessons in English in most big cities. But this will limit your options even further down. Normal universities will of course operate in German.

there are some university courses that are partially or mainly taught in English language. Out of personal experience: aviation and aerospace have very little German content although Otto Lilienthal and Gustav Weisskopf invented aeroplanes and aeronautics. . On the other hand: what university classes in German language can you attend in the UK, France, South-Africa, Argentina, the US of A or ... wherever ...

I have over 30 years experience in it in the US and Canada and I have people interested but nobody would hire me because of the age. There's also a law in Germany that you have to pay a certain amount of money to people over a certain age and although I was willing to work for less, the opportunities went over; btw I speak C1 German with a certificate and live there for many years when I was younger. It's just easier for them in general; I'm sure there are exceptions, to hire young foreigners without a good level of German, especially for IT jobs in Germany, because they can pay less. It didn't happen so I moved to Poland. I love the Polish people and now I'm going to learn Polish.

@@caciliawhy5195 I feel the same way. Here's a better question, "Were the older people in your office in their late 40s when they were hired?" I've been looking for a job for 9 years in Germany and I've not given up looking; it's inevitable to not lose hope after so many years. Every few months the Arbeitsagentur sends me a "vermittlngvorschlag" and it's usually in a city far from where I live. I suppose I would get nothing from them if they only sent me jobs within 50km. The last one they sent was from a company with its HQ in Austria. I had a great job interview but they said they could not hire me because I'm not an EU citizen. Did the Arbeitsagentur not notice that, or not know that? Or was it my age? I'll never know.

Tips on how to not get stuck in the expat (i.e. immigrant) bubble: Don't join the expat bubble but stick with German friends, learn German beyond A1 or A2 level -- ideally before moving --and actually try to use it even when it's not the easiest option; don't make moving to a city where there already is a large expat community a priority. In fact, consider living or at least spending some time in a place where, unlike Berlin's central areas, people don't tend to speak English that much; there are countless places where this is the case. In my view, the reason people get stuck in this bubble is usually that they have no other options first (because they don't speak German) or that even if they do, they follow the path of least resistance and difficulty.
@LythaWausW
@LythaWausW 3 жыл бұрын
Agreed - you cannot get stuck in an ex-pat bubble if there are no ex-pats anywhere nearby (where I live). OTOH if I lived in Berlin, I'd be thrilled to join that bubble because after 14 years of living immersed in only Germans, I miss having "path of least resistance and difficulty" friends.
@theopuscula
@theopuscula 3 жыл бұрын
@@LythaWausW then possibly living in Germany isn't for you. My comment wasn't meant in reference to German friendship mentality. It is something you can generally observe with so called expat communities (including German ones) that people end up not learning the local language and getting local friends exactly because of them.

@@gerdahessel2268 At 6:50+ she said stucking in the bubble is a common thing for most expats because its so much easier for them to live where other other expats live. Therefore she advices thier audience to take German classes, to learn the language to open their mind and become a part of the country they are choose to live in. For an average expat who stays for 2 to 4 years that bubble thing is fine for me. After 5 years you should be able to do some chatter in German and follow at least a conversation in German. But as Dana said, she don't need to learn the language of this country because because their friends are all expats and her boy friend as well. Its pretty much the same for many turkish people over here in Hamburg. Its eay to find Turk who has been living here for 30 years and speaks almost no or just a very basic German.

@@henryluebberstedt7819 Watch from 1:57 to 2:24. She says that living in the expat-bubble is a really easy transition into the German culture. And that is not true! It's easy to live among other expats if you're an expat yourself and am fine with that! I told my guest-daughter from Bogota just to stick with the other international students, because it's nearly not possible to make friends with German pupils within 10 months. But you do not integrate into German culture that way. The problem of Immigrants not being able to speak German despite living here for years is something different. I would assume there might be a difference in education, but there are many sides to this subject.
