I’m going to lean towards the mental illness or even a family trauma theory. It’s passed down to Sam who was the most closest to his mother vs Nolan who was more resilient to his mother belief .

I saw this as an discussion on how do we “protect” ourselves and our children from the cruelty of the world? How close do keep them to home? What is the role of ritual? I also got vibes to a good movie, Frailty, with similar themes.

There are 2 theories. The mom seems to have done something as the husband told her if she had said anything to the boys about what she did. She is definitely schizophrenic and thinking that her mom and dad and husband has this evil entity, she ended up killing them. The reason the kids couldn't see it is because it wasn't real and until the mother commits suicide which is traumatic for the kids, then they start seeing things as well on top of years of stories and malnutrition and constant reminder that something is lurking. Right when the guy showed up with a cellphone and called 911 right then and there, it was set in stone that it was all lies or what she believed to be real, which isn't her fault. Right when one of the kids says she loved me more and the other one steps on his rope right before it ends he says it again which could imply that since now the devil is inside him he has no restraints to say what he pleases as when we first hear it we know he did not say it just wanted both boys to go against each other and create more chaos for it to accomplish its goal to make it to the city. (Which btw could also imply that this evil was trapped there along with the house and the mother, not the woods or the entire world like she claimed)

The mom was very different back then as she said. She did some sort of ritual to summon this entity. She admitted it herself that she brought it to them. The entity was inside her the whole time, it was part of her. At the end the entity took the shape of the mom and said something really interesting. It said something along the lines of I'm more of your mother than she was or something like that. This suggests the entity and the mom became the same. The entity possessed her and they essentially became one. The entity seems to be a snake demon. And it seems like the mom has a things for snake entities, or at least did when she was younger as shown from her tattoos.

One of the interpretations I've seen was smth like this: June has been in some sort of cult before (hence, "I was different then" & the snake tattoo). They summoned or somehow got in with the entity, and that's why she ran back to her parents house - trying to escape. There's not enough in the movie to support this theory, but it's a fun head-canon

Nah, its all in her head. She did something to her father, mom & her husband, escaped with her kids to this house. She had mental issues & blames everything on a great evil that she brought, which is her shifting the blame. It is only she who sees these things. Only sam who is susceptible to his mother's stories also falls to this delusion. Nolan who is more independent, escapes this mental condition. Eventually we find out that the outside is normal, proving that sam & his mom have mental issues.

I don't think much was left up to interpretation at the end of this movie. Leading up to the conclusion it absolutely took the viewer back and forth in regard to what was really happening. But I feel they were mostly clear on what exactly played out by it's conclusion. If only the darker of the two brothers experienced supernatural things, then I'd be more open to the supernatural aspects not playing out in the objective world. But the more mentally sound brother also experienced these things. Also, the beings took the same form for all three main characters. There was an objectively real supernatural demonic force around the area of the house. Tethering to the house really did keep the force at bay. I think both brothers (though it may have been one, I forget) experienced something supernatural at the moment they untethered themselves. The photograph at the end taken by one of the boys, showed the being's hand on his shoulder. This was not from the perspective of any of the characters suspected to have been hallucinating. It was from we the viewer's perspective. Making it meant to be taken as objectively what happened, in my opinion. The only thing that I left questioning, was if the hiker was a normal man, or a manifestation of the being. He could have been the being. But that would mean that the being or beings had the ability to provide real-world resources like food. I lean toward him being a regular guy. Of course I believe the daughter we saw manifesting was the demon or one of them (Depending on if it was only one entity or more throughout the story). I think it took that form since the boy had seen the hiker's daughter already in a picture. Although I think what was real was for the most, straightforward, I still think the creator(s) of the story intended to give it somewhat an illusion of a tale left up to interpretation. They purposefully fueled discussions like those of this video. But ultimately, I think they provided just enough information, to tie up what really went on.

From what I got from this movie is before her mom decided to move to her parents house she must have lived in New York as a prostitute from one of the pictures I saw that she was showing her boys of what she looked like when she lived in the city. I’m sure she killed her husband from what we saw when she was hallucinating, I believe she killed her mother and her father as well. These two boys I feel so bad for them. Mom passed her mental illness onto her kids, especially Sam in particular. The other sign that was questioning it was able to break free. I believe there was no evil out there. The man with the back pack was innocent he even had an iPhone. It’s just crazy these poor boys didn’t know what another human looked like. Halle berry was amazing in this film and spoiler here when she committed suicide the boys really carried the last 40 minutes of the movie. When she tried to kill the dog they had for 10 years I cried my eyes out lol

I don't English very well.but this film is very esay to understand.i will explain it as i can "Jun and her family had initially lived in the city. Later, she fell in love with a man who was actually a demon in human form. Her husband had kept his true identity a secret, even from their children. When Jun's mother discovered the truth about her son-in-law, she tried to warn Jun, but she refused to believe her. The mother moved to a secluded place and built a home there, hoping to distance herself from the demonic influence. Despite her mother's warnings, Jun continued to live with her demon husband. Years passed, and Jun and her husband had two children who exhibited supernatural abilities. When Jun finally realized the truth about her husband, she became paranoid, believing that everyone in the world was possessed by demons. This paranoia stemmed from her own experiences and her disbelief in her mother's warnings. Her husband, the demon, eventually revealed his true nature and harmed Jun and her mother. It was then that Jun fully understood the extent of her husband's deception. The children, being half-demon, also displayed supernatural powers, such as Samuel's ability to eat frogs like a snake and Nolan's unusual heat tolerance."

evil was definitely in the 3rd dimension, i just think it was bound to the woods by the house bc June brought it back she said...i think the house needed to be destroyed to be let out back in to the world...idk, but the evil was destroyed by the younger twin. the foundation which was the source of the power of protection is where they were laying and it weakened the evil enough to be destroyed by the presence of fearlessness and love for a mother from son LIKE HARRY'S MOM AND VOLDEMORT(SNAKE)

Reason I say this - Sam was the one who inspected the photo of Cole and his daughter, and then "hallucinated" the daughter that same night due to guilt for killing Cole. He may have simply "snapped" after that as he confronts his own actions. Since he was the one to see the photo, he sees the daughter. Hmmm. For me, the Entity stumbled upon them after the family moved into the cabin in the woods. If the Entity existed, it might be lingering in certain territory, which is the deeper side of the woods. They could go to other place if they attached themselves to their targets. From then on, it stuck to the family and it seemed only one person on the family at a time was able to see them until they met their end, slowly driving them insane and seeing things (mental illness emerged), until eventually it killed all of its targets and marked new ones, which I assumed would be the town they were going into. Entities could cause mental issues. It's something writers thought of too

I've heard the director himself say that the evil is not real, I would have had more respect for him if it was😂. The film falls apart if the mother was really insane and everything was meant to be imaginary. I'm going to give him the benefit of doubt and say he didn't explain himself properly in that interview or breakdown of the movie I watched because of the French accent and assume there was some language barrier. If that's not the case he's not as good a director as he's been credited for. I say this because there are a lot of signs that illustrate that the evil was real. The polaroid photo for instance. No one is around to see it, just the audience. The paramedics didn't take it with Sam when he was airlifted. When the movie closes out we are shown the photo and we see the image of the evil creature's hand on Sam’s shoulder. How can this be his delusion if we are seeing it in the movie's real world setting? It can't be his paranoia; we see it just as we saw the traveller‘s iPhone calling the authorities which was a reveal and twist to show that civilisation and the world did not stop as the children in the movie were led to believe. Then there are the supernatural events we witnessed, case in point Sam was seen cutting his brother’s rope after his possession, then he is seen in another part of the woods. Dude was teleporting around the woods like Friday the 13th’s Jason Vorhees. I mean are we really going to ignore that he was able to get back to the house before his brother Nolan? He was in the bedroom waiting for him with a hidden cutlass waiting to kill him with it. He plotted the whole thing to lock him in the house and burn him alive, that wasn't the mind of a child and definitely not the mind of that child. That was clearly the result of possession. When Nolan was confronted by the evil creature impersonating his mother it said it didn't even have to touch him for him to destroy his family. That wasn't Nolan’s delusions, he didn't even believe in any of it. He could be likened to the apostle Thomas who didn't believe Jesus had been resurrected until Jesus returned and told him to touch his wounds in the Bible. People that think the movie is just about a schizophrenic woman act like movies like the Grudge don't exist. In that movie the Grudge demon turns people crazy but the evil is still real. The same way the victims in the Grudge movies aren't imagining things just because they are the only ones that can see what they are seeing is the same way that the evil was real in this movie or at least that's how it's shown.🤷 If the director wanted to drive home that the characters were mentally unwell he fucked up. The way to have shown that would of been to show Sam looking at the polaroid photo when the house was burning and show the creatures arm on his shoulder at that moment so it is the photo seen from his perspective then when the photo is shown at the end of the movie show the photo without the creatures arm on his shoulder. That's how you illustrate the work of delusion in film. As it stands the movie plays out as if, the evil was a real threat.

I think there is some underlying msgs in this movie, def some not so nice one's, hints of mental illness are definitely apparent without questions, Hints of the story of adam & eve, the devil showing up as a serpent. Also quite a bit of anti whiteism was thrown in this movie as well. Based on how the mom says she brought the evil there, one could assume because she is mixed with white, she is talking about that, + all the monster's except for 1 are white. There is other stuff in there as well, the boy chasing after a white girl, etc. If you look a bit deeper past what they are showing to the underlying msg, this stuff is apparent throughout the film. But taking what she said at face value, right before her ending, she says there was a lot she didn't tell the boy's an she mentions that she is at fault for creating or bringing the evil there, we see her tattoos, the pic of her dressed like a h00, it all leads one to believe she may have been a sinner, maybe even a demon worshiper, So was she doing stuff that actually brought the demon to our world? & then did it attach to her an then she ran off to the house, If that was the case it kinda makes one wonder if maybe the house is not just thier protection, but could it also be a prison, maybe the rope isn't just a lifeline, maybe it is thier chains, keeping them there, an never allowing them to go back to the world that the mom probably knew still existed, maybe that is why she never wanted them to leave because she knew the evil/the demon would follow them back, so she sort of quarantined herself and her family there so that it could never get back to the rest of the world, like we see happening with the pic showing that the demon is still attatched to the boy. That's if we can take it at face value. That is one theory, but another is everything is as we see it happen in the movie, only at the end the boy never made it out of the house burning down, an what we are shown is the afterlife or one the demon is allowing him to see, or maybe we are seeing his final thoughts in the box as the house burns down, because that is what he did in there, closed his eyes an picture good thing's, i also think it could be a possibility because of what he says throughout the film, like how he draws a picture of them with wings an being able to fly, an then at the end they are flying above everything in the helicopter, also he says he would never leave his brother behind, his brother who was possessed by the demon, an also because why on earth would this demon be defeated by the box, that doesn't add up at all. But it also brings up other questions because how was the demon able to walk throughout the house to chase him just fine, was the house ever actually keeping it out? So with that on the table it makes one wonder if any of it was real, or was it all a bunch of delusions & mental Illness? Idk it is kind of a complex movie that could have more than 1 answer, or maybe it's none of them an all of it is just as we see it.

There's a few I could think that do this, and a lot of times, I end up getting confused and not know what happens from that point moving forward 😂 it also makes the conclusion for me, more open to different things, which I'm not sure is always what the director or writers always want or intend for 🤷

How what about it? It was original, good camera work. Not perfect but you are crazy if you think that

@@cullenmacgillivary6669 that’s the point it was nothing special, it’s not better than the “good movies” that are out and it doesn’t compare with the “good” or “ok” movies back then. Idk I love watching all kinds of movies my whole life, this movie is so forgettable it’s sad. -it wasn’t scary like at all.. -it was very boring -it’s rated R but was a straight up a kids PG-13 movie. -it was very slow and dragged out and left a lot of good parts the could’ve added. -it was straight up a hallmark movie with dark twist Movie was so bad a person in my theater answered a phone call and told the person they were talking to how horrible it was we were only 43 mins into it 😂

The problem with this movie is the fact that the kids were born into a word of isolation and hunger, it would have been normal life for them and no reason to panic over one hard winter 😂

except theyve had MULTIPLE hard winters and they stated FOR idiots like you, that this was exceptionally difficult. As they've NEVER run out of this much food. maybe try and use your brain a tiny bit?

I fucking hated Nolan character and I couldn't believe he caused his mother to die. Although she did her upmost best to protect them both.
