I like subway tile. I thought I wanted something different, something unique. Then I looked at my budget.😜 so I settled for white subway tile but in the kitchen there are 3 x 12 and in the bathroom they’re 4 x 12. A little bit different than normal. But also classic. I am never remodeling this house again.

We’re in the process of building our retirement house, and I’m happy to say we’re doing a tray ceiling in the open plan living/dining space, along with a square fireplace (I like a traditional look rather than contemporary linear style). And our cabinet maker will be building the kitchen cabinets out of quarter sawn white oak, with a light to medium stain. I’m planning subway tiles (white with a bit of an uneven surface) for the backsplash, and probably quartz countertops, which I have been wanting for over twenty years. I started out dreaming of a modern farmhouse look, but came to realize the house wants to be more Craftsman inspired.

I think that the irrational hatred towards granite stems from seeing the ubiquitous builder grade granite. Branching out past that builder grade level opens up so many wonderful colors, patterns, and possibilities.

My house has ceiling detail that was put in when the house was built. It was painted using a technique that makes it look like intricate overlaid half circles throughout the house. It's the one part of the house that was done well when it was built in 1971.

Arden cracks me up stealing the show from Cornelius! Love seeing those two. Anyway, so glad you mentioned subway tile. I am not sure where people got the idea that subway tile is “dated” because that certainly hasn’t been my experience. I have been using white subway tile with black grout in my kitchens for years. White subway tile, black grout, white cabinet slabs with black pulls and black countertop equals my secret to a timeless, never dated kitchen

Marble is beautiful but I absolutely love my granite. I'd never use Quartz because of the health hazards it can create for the workmen. Quartzite though is a natural stone and a great option as well.
@parisakamali3454 ай бұрын
We have now banned silicone based engineered stones, i.e., quartz in Australia , to reduce the impact on workers installing them. When we know better, we do better

Good Morning Garrett, Thank you for such a timeless vlog😍 I loved it, classic!!! The choice of wood colour, to the ceiling details (which for sure I will incorporate in the next project), the importance of square fireplace, loved it all. Our first buy back home, I chose 2 toned kitchen, that’s some 20 years ago🙃 The bonanza in todays vlog was to see these 2 munchkins together, adohhhhhrable♥️ Btw I had such a grumpy start of the day and when my blood was boiling, I thought let’s go to my Garrett comitmment😋and yes it calmed me down, brought a smile and twinkle in my eyes with 🐶 presence and of course so much of knowledge as always😊 So thank you for everything and have a wonderful week ahead. Podcast Idea Request - Could you do a podcast on managing floor replacements in a home over time? For example, as floors, even hardwood, become damaged beyond repair, replacing them can be extremely expensive-like $40,000 for a 2,500 sq ft home. I’d love to hear tips on how to replace flooring in some rooms while keeping the undamaged areas intact, to save money and avoid full house replacement. ?????????????????

Yay Cornelius Yay Arden 🎉 I think the inspiration photos today were beautiful. I live in FL and I wish I could have a fireplace but it just doesn’t go. What do you think of the long rectangular fireplaces inset below the flat screen tv? Elevated or “sorry- but no…”?

It really depends on the space. There rarely is a feature I’m totally for or against. Every situation is different so I’d have to see the space to give an opinion or alternatives.

That is a really good tip about the brown floors and cabinetry. Fortunately I did this - but I didn’t know it was so important to the overall design. I just liked the wood floor that I selected and the wood that already existed on the cabinetry. Red or yellow wood tones would have looked awful - now I know why

My tip for going to the yard to pick your slap for the kitchen is you bring one of your dishes. Why? Because different slaps look different with your dishes. For example I saw a beautiful slab but that would only look good with very modern dishes etc. Totally a a bad vibe for me kitchen.

This formed the basis of his sketches and recommendations. So the biggest prep beforehand was in just deciding to be open with him.
