The song “memento mori” is exactly what it says it is. A memento mori is an item that people used to carry to remind them of their inevitable death and mortality. Something like a coin with a skull on it. This sounds dark but it was actually a positive thing. When people come to terms with their mortality, it gives them perspective. Only when you truly accept your death will you be able to appreciate life for the gift it is. This is why people who have near death experiences often turn their lives around completely because they now have seen the truth of their fleeting existence and thus they don’t want to waste another moment of the finite time that they have. The song is a musical version of that coin that people used to carry around. It serves as a poignant reminder of our coming death. For me, the song is tremendously positive, even though it may not sound that way.
