My underrated moment of the episode comes when they first enter Jackson. The camera pans past a corner building and reveals a kind of platform upon which Tommy is revealed. On a cursory glance, one would be forgiven for mistaking it for a gallows like those set up by FEDRA in Boston to hang "criminals." Instead of it being a tool for tearing down those who would challenge the government's authority, though, it's actually some kind of scaffolding for a crane being used to lift up something that's rebuilding an aspect of society that was lost during the two decades since the outbreak.

😺 Verowak 😺 I'm of the mind that Joel's issue is due in part from him pushing his feelings down and not dealing with them, ever since Sarah passed. But part of it could be from other physical issues (heart attack, age, etc.). I'm glad he at least admits to "Lady Mormont of Bear Island" that he does care for her, and she for him. Saying anything more would require him to face his feelings, including those he's suppressed. "The Option" was probably the only way he could think of 'to keep her' as he realized he loves her as his daughter and can't let her go. A "tell-all" will be when he starts accepting/granting her requests/'wishes.' "They both" need a talk, I don't know if Joel can do it. I'm hoping Lady Mormont will push him a bit.

I adore the fact that they inserted Never Let Me Down Again back into the show in this episode. In episode 1, the original song by Depeche Mode played signaling trouble as Bill and Frank had died. It is a perfect song to choose lyrically. Now, the song has returned in the form of a softer, female voice for Joel's injury, making you relate the lyrics of the song from Ellie with her relationship with Joel. It's just a fantastic full circle moment with the music production of the show. 💜

Crying Simulator is 100% correct. "I'm failing in my sleep" was when it caught up with me. Brilliant acting I can't say that enough and the adaptation is the best I have ever seen from a video game. To answer your question "What character from a different series were you afraid for?" Going to have to go with a classic movie on this one Aliens with Sigourney Weaver. Near the end where she gets rambo'd up and rides the elevator down to the queens hive to find Newt. When I first watched it, it was pure panic! Amazing movie and acting all around as well🙂 Awesome reaction thanks so much Vero!

"Welcome to the Crying Simulator" 10/10 title. No notes. This episode! My heart can't take 3 more episodes like this, hot dang. The analyst in me just wondered why, if Tommy knew how important Ellie was, and knowing how much weaker Joel is, he didn't try to barter in town with some people to escort them to the location and back? And now Ellie is stuck who-knows-where with zero first aid training in the winter wilds. I hope like you said, someone can help in those houses, or maybe the train nearby? This episode was heartfelt and heartbreaking. I'm glad they at least had a good last few days together. BUT JOEL SURELY YOU HAVE PLOT ARMOR?! I can't even.
@VerowakReacts
@VerowakReacts Жыл бұрын
What I assume is the good news is that the remaining episodes won't be like this... the bad news is I think they'll be worse somehow?! It would have been nice if Tommy sent some people to help them, if I was Tommy, I would have gone WITH THEM! I hope the plot armor is strong with this one... I don't know how I'll handle the next episode if Joel doesn't 😭
@stephaniel2850
@stephaniel2850 Жыл бұрын
I do feel like a lot of Joel's issues are a lot less actually about physical stuff (other than the hearing loss), and more him having 20 years of trauma and guilt around feeling like he should have been able to protect Sarah (and Tess, Henry and Sam, etc.) but wasn't able to, and him no longer being able to suppress it all with Ellie in the picture, you know? So if I had to guess, I'd imagine Tommy probably understood that, and so he recognized that Joel coming around on taking Ellie himself was him having at least started working through the trauma and fear enough to be ready to take that step. Obviously it's still always safer to have 2 adults on hand rather than 1, so it would have been helpful regardless, but Tommy had only agreed to go so that Joel wouldn't have to. So probably once Joel was up for taking that leap and going, Tommy was glad to be able to stay back and not put himself at risk with Maria and their to-be-born child counting on him. But yeah, without going into spoilers: it's going to be an intense last few episodes closing out the season! 😩This show it too dang good at hitting you right in all the feelings!
@zeldangerous
@zeldangerous Жыл бұрын
@@stephaniel2850 I think you misread my comment. I was wondering why Tommy didn’t try to get someone ELSE to travel with Ellie and Joel. The episode explains why Tommy doesn’t want to leave and his reasons are valid. But Joel trusted Ellie’s secret with Tommy, who decided that a messed up Joel would be enough protection lol. Tommy don’t care I guess! Too busy new life, they don’t need a cure in Commune!

The Last of Us has been maybe my biggest popular culture obsession of the last ten years. I have watched a whole ton of play-throughs as I love seeing people sharing that experience of playing it for the first time and have been loving watching reaction videos for the series from both people who know the game and who do not. I think this has been one of the best reaction watches of the series from someone unfamiliar with the game. I would love to see you do a play-through of the game as it would be so interesting as someone who saw the game before the series and has enjoyed seeing how it has been adapted for the screen to see how someone whose experience is the other way around react to the game.

My personal favorite episode is 5, but this is definitely number 2. Initially, I thought the horse in the last scene was fake because it didn't move. But trained horses can stand perfectly still if their reins are touching the ground (ground tying), and apparently, a relaxed or half-sleeping horse will on occasion raise one of its legs, so the horse definitely could've been real.

Such great performances in this one. And great reaction too! Your eyes and your hands were working overtime in this one :) Oh, and to answer your question about what character in a different series I was afraid for... basically everyone in Mazin's Chernobyl series! Made the dumb decision to watch it concurrently with this series, so Sundays were particularly brutal 😂 But Chernobyl is only 5 episodes, so now I'll only be wrecked by this series for the remainder of the season :)

The native couple reminds me, you should watch the series "Reservation Dogs" (I don't mean the movie Reservoir Dogs). If you want more of that kind of humor, it is a great series. Taika is Executive Producer and writes for it some, but it is very heavily a Native American run, crewed, cast production..

@@VerowakReacts That scene when Joel just pours out his heart about his fears and shortcomings to Tommy was just amazing, I'm tearing up again (goddammit) just thinking about it. @phj223 Жыл бұрын
@@VerowakReacts Maybe entitled isn't the correct phrase, but I thought it was weird of him to just assume that Tommy would risk everything and go along with him and Ellie, seeing how Tommy had a good life in the fort. The "normal" reaction I feel would have been to simply ask, and acknowledge the fact that he's asking a lot, particularly when Tommy said he was going to be a father. Instead Joel got annoyed, and I was like "really bruh?" But it sets up the scene later on, which was just perfection.

Only 7 seconds in, had to stop. "The Crying Simulator" You mean "The Crying Inducer" don't you? But you got a smile from me with that. I thank you. Joel: "Get behind me." Verowak: "You're surrounded though" Me: "There is a drop off to the river , they aren't going to 'fly their horses over the river' so she could position herself between the river and Joel, so there's one avenue of possible escape if fleeing becomes necessary. Though in the temperatures likely, probably a short lived escape." 12:40-13:56 I could try to grab the specific instances, but there's so much in this 1 minute and 16 seconds of the reaction captured here. Joel blames himself, and any parent would, if their child died in their arms, because they couldn't do what they saw as their "one and only, most important job" protecting their child. He's been carrying that burden 20 years, and he's realizing aspects of how many time things would have been different if Ellie wasn't there to save him (admittedly he wouldn't be in many of those situations if not for her, but when you're blaming yourself, it's easy to add the extra burden without placing blame outside yourself) Joel feels like he's been failing Sarah for 20 years, and he's afraid of failing Ellie. It's hard to admit someone else would be better to do the job you accepted. Next up Joel comes to see Ellie, and Ellie drops truth bombs, and Bella Ramsey is phenomenal in the delivery. [I felt that, and I'm not even the person who is there that she hit] 16:50-16:55 your comments made me have to mention this. Joel never touched that rifle before that day. He took 2 shots to find it's aim. Most of the shooters I know, mostly from handgun training, need 4-10 shots to acquire the specifics of a gun. I am familiar with only 2 rifles. If you hand me "the same rifle" but not the same specific" rifle, I'm going to need to learn that rifle. Probably 12-20 rounds at 5 ranges if I want to be accurate. First time learning to use a rifle at "rifle short range" I think I burned up about a 50 round box. I learned handgun and shotgun firing a slug as a kid, Didn't start learning rifles until I was in my 30s. [What I'm getting at is, pick up a rifle you don't know, and make a hundred yard shot, you'll have to adapt. If it's not a model he's familiar with, he's got a lot of skill to pick up a headshot at range last episode with only 2 shots to gauge off of, and then feel comfortable enough to make those close shots . Even 2 rifles of the same design have nuances. This rifle is Tommy's, just with a different scope, he's probably fired it a number of times before, and he knows if his brother would keep it true (which a hunter would), and would have advised if it was off] 19:50-20:00 Neither of these actors are in the scenes that come to mind, but I was pulled to this. "A Khal who cannot ride, is no Khal." (Series they are both in, Neither were even introduced by the time of this scene.) 25:45-23:05 Graham Greene, I've never seen him in any significant part (i.e. more than 12 seconds of screen time) that I didn't consider great or better.. Elaine Miles is always a pleasure to encounter. These are the couple [Marlon and Florence] in the beginning of the episode. "short end of the stick" is apt. "the worse end of an unfair deal" while "drawing the short straw" is more of the "you get to be the one to do this thing none of us want to do."
