Your repair is good proof people can save a lot of money if capable of doing their repairs. I use AlumAseal Radiator Stop Leak for Radiator leaks. It's a powder that melts once in a hot cooling system. It has stopped very bad leaks for me. Similar stuff is used for leaks in boiler heating systems. I don't run pressure on the cooling system after I've had a rad leak. I keep AlumAseal in my Glove-compartment. An alternative fix for my rad could be removing the top plastic inlet tank on the radiator. Can be removed by bending up tabs. Inside is an o-ring that could be coated with a high quality automotive silicone.

I would stay away from the additives as these may leave a film on everything including engine internals and reduce cooling efficiency.

the original bars leak was great, not only for small leaks but it was also a lubricant and rust inhibitor. not sure about todays product.
