The Swedish version is from the viewpoint of a Swedish soldier in the 30 year war, it's his thoughts and fears. The English version is from the point of a neutral observer who can see the losses and the politics behind the war. There's a lyric version with a translated version of the Swedish version.
@InkanSpider4 жыл бұрын
As a Swede I think that's the beauty of it: the Swedish album is subjective, since it's from the Swedes perspective, while the English one is objective and about the history as a whole. They complete each other and that is so great

So see me as A husband, a friend Father and son who never comes home But who will miss me? My father fought for freedom in Iraq, Bosnia, etc., and grandfather World War II, who fought voluntarily for freedom in other countries all over the world. I made the same decision and did military service for a time and now as a 46 year ex soldier I do not hesitate to protect our planet from the men of evil. I havent read all comments but i hope someone has mentioned it before. The 30 years war was between protestants and catholics, sweden sided with the protestants and fought with the german protestants gainst he catholics..they made some horrible war crimes...that a side..the fact that the audience sings with the band is corresponding very well to the sweidsh soldiers in the 30 years war because sweden had a small army even back then and we were underestimated. Historians believe the reason that sweden did so well in the 30 years war was because, even though they had a small army in comparission to the rest, the majoriy of the soldiers really and truly believed in what they were fighting for. This is an historical event that proves that deomocracy rules as long as you all fight for what you believe in. That the audience is singing in perfect unison feels to me like a perfectly, honoroable rememberance of our ancestors who died in that war. They stood and died together. But in the end they are all just dead.

Here's my translation that also goes well with the melody. Let me know what you think. I turn around to see my homestead fade away I wish I could have stayed there, just another day Not yet a man, though called to arms to do my part Will I see my home again, I wish with all my heart With kinsmen from my village I went out to war In a world of flames ‘Cause war surely can, devastate a man I give my life, for my motherland But who’s missing me? So see me as them the husband and friend the father and son, who’s never seen again But who mourns over me? Went out to war for Sweden, baptized in blood No gallantry awaits us, dying in the mud In fields where friends has fallen, there’ll be no songs Our fate once more we challenge, and marches on Far away from home (To be baptized and die in war) In a world of flames ‘Cause war surely can, devastate a man I give my life, for my motherland But who’s missing me? So see me as them the husband and friend the father and son, who’s never seen again But who mourns over me? And when my time is finally here Who’ll sing my song? They’re fighting on I hope to die without much fear I fall asleep, and fade away And never wake up ‘Cause war surely can, devastate a man I give my life, for my motherland But who’s missing me? So see me as them the husband and friend the father and son, who’s never seen again But who mourns over me?

Hey Anthony! Nothing easier than that. They did this song in Swedish and in English. Here are the official English lyrics. Hope that helps you out. If you want to hear the song in English try A lifetime of War. Two ways to view the world so similar at times Two ways to rule the world to justify their crimes By kings and queens young men are sent to die in war Their propaganda speaks those words been heard before Two ways to view the world brought Europe down in flames Two ways to rule Has man gone insane? A few will remain Who’ll find a way To live one more day Through decades of war It spreads like disease, There’s no sign of peace Religion and creed Cause millions to bleed Three decades of war From dawn to dawn they’re fighting, Die where they stand The fog of war lies thick When armies scorch the land. When all of Europe’s burning What can be done? They’ve been to war a decade, Two more to come Long way from home Döpas och dö I strid Lifetime at war Has man gone insane? A few will remain Who’ll find a way To live one more day Through decades of war. It spreads like disease, There’s no sign of peace. Religion and creed Cause millions to bleed. Three decades of war. When they face death they’re all alike No right or wrong, rich or poor No matter who they served before Good or bad, they’re all the same Rest side by side now

My last name "Häggström" is an old soldier name so it's likely my ancestors went out to war, this song makes me wonder how they lived

For some reason it just makes you "connected" and a bit warm fuzzy knowing your ancestors fought for your country :) Mine was with Karl XII in holowczyn and poltava 1709 and was captured by the russians in poltava. He didnt return to Sweden until 1722 :)
