15 years ago, when I was in 5th grade the IT guy at my school described pretty much this as what the future of computers would be.
@alexatkin4 жыл бұрын
Its a fine line between a giant tablet and an AIO PC. Its not like its even a new concept, 15 years ago Dell even made an AIO that had a TV tuner and HDMI input built in, so it doubled as a monitor. All that wireless streaming is also all very well, but reliability still is questionable. I was in a hotel 5 years ago that had a Samsung TV you could stream to from your phone. Lets just say it wasn't entirely seamless due to signal crosstalk from all the WiFi in the area. Its more practical at higher frequencies like 60Ghz that wont pass through walls so you get a clean signal. The major difference here between a TV and monitor is that the monitor still lacks a lot of the TVs features, but tweaks the UI in a way that makes more sense for the use-case they have in mind not being primarily TV.

After getting used to having two TVs running Android and my wife and I jokingly calling them the "two biggest tablets in the house", I figured a device like this was just a matter of time. Give them another 2-3 years and smart monitors with tablet/notebook functionality will be fairly unremarkable. Within 5+ years, it may well be a standard feature. Try buying a nice TV that *isn't* a smart TV these days so it just makes sense for monitors to also go down that road. Seems like a really nice device for a teen or college student or just someone with a cramped apartment or home office. I wouldn't be surprised if smart TVs are capable of basic home computing like running productivity suites by then too. It really doesn't seem much of a stretch to have a TV running Android TV, running Google Docs or GMail from a little wireless Logitech keyboard w/trackpad. Just pause your show and check your mail without even needing to reach for a phone or tablet. There's no reason a TV couldn't function as a basic chromebook in several years.

I've been pleasantly surprised with the job Samsung has been doing in the past few years. They aren't exactly the most flashy company, and I generally don't like the tech that they come up with, but I admire their willingness to actually try out some risky ideas that may, or may not add extra value to their lineups. Very few companies are willing to even try, and I'm glad Samsung has the spine for it. Samsung offers neat things at reasonable prices. They push bigger companies like Sony and Apple to stay ahead, but in the process also manage to fill in a nice middle area that most tech companies can't compete in.
@MIZOPERSPECTIVE2 жыл бұрын
Sony bigger company??? Have u been living under a rock or something??? Samsung has long surpassed Sony in almost all areas that matter...They are the biggest manufacturer of Android phones and smart TVs..They are also the leader in OLED technology and marketing...they are the sole owner of the most widely used and popular amoled screens on phones. They are among market leaders in semi-conductors..DRAM, SSD(nand), wireless technology, mobile chipsets and a whole host of the others...In which area is Sony a market leader??? Playstation and Mirrorless cameras???Samsung is in fact the 2nd most valuable electronic company next to Apple in terms of revenue Sony comes in at 9th...Samsung annual revenue is 3x more than Sony...Apple is all about marketing and delivering an end product, where there products shine because of the software not the hardware..Apple never invented nor innovated that is hardware related, that's Samsung's territory..In fact, Apple has to rely on Samsung for most of their hardware like amoled screens and nand chips...Apples key selling points are IOS and MacOS, they are a software company, all their hardware are manufactured and supplied by others...On the other hand, Samsung manufactures and supplies hardware and has to rely on others for software like Android(Google)..So who exactly is pushing who???Get ur facts straight!!!!

You don't ~need a toaster - you have an oven. You don''t ~need high density displays - 1080 is more than a human requires - and grandma cant see the detail beyond 720p anyway. You don't ~need keyboard and mouse support - most people play on console - and PC gamers have controllers these days anyway. You don't ~need larger batteries in mobile phones - powerpoints are everywhere - you can just charge the phone during the day... (Opinion) I'm personally sick and tired of TV getting all the preferential treatment. Likely because they have the higher volume of sales... 1440p should have been a mainstream monitor resolution half a decade ago. After 2009 I expected higher resolution displays to drop in price as demand picked up - but they didn't. The introduction of "HD" as a marketing term is one of my least favourite hindrances to display technology. If monitors are going to suffer due to TV marketing, they should at least have the extra features.

One thing I can say is that Edge on Linux is blazing fast and it's super stable despite being in alpha. In the meantime I need a second monitor. @@Oystein87 Quite a number of Samsung "smart" TVs have ads built right into the UI. For example: my parents' 4k Samsung TV has a little sponsored area in the main popup menu. It's always there and it's impossible to remove with the only option being to use a firewall. I'm not sure if other TV brands do that, but I wouldn't be surprised if they start doing it too. That's not to mention that "smart" also means "nearly zero control" and that implies you getting to watch all ads from KZbin and whatever other streaming services as well.
