Situated in Bukit Panjang, which directly translates to long hill in Malay, the aptly named Gradient Space took inspiration from the abundance of nature and natural sloping terrain surrounding the urban area. The talented team from METRE Architects made no alterations to the floor plan and existing built-in cabinetry of the new studio apartment, opting for all design interventions to be additions. The key element being a single sloped gradient containing bed, sofa, working come dining table and coffee table all fused into one, the space and function changing as you move up and down the slope. Ample storage can be found inside the element, both underneath the bed and inside the half steps, which double as additional seating. The custom made the table and bench in the same diagonal geometry, fit into one another and allow for easy shifting and reconfiguration. All the carpentry is made from plywood core, finished in the same laminate as if everything was carved from a single piece of wood.

I think this space is over-designed. Apart from the glass partition in the kitchen, every single addition made the space look smaller, all the sharp angles feel dangerous and unwelcoming and there are already existing storage solutions that would have worked and looked more cozy. The way the bed is raised, blocking an entire floor to cealing window is unthinkable to me. A nice bed, a good sofa, tv console and maybe a dual function office/dining table top on hinges, maybe a light translucent curtain partition between living and keeping would have been enough.

I really liked that, too! It, also, gives the sensory illusion of more space, because of having to stop, open, and close the door to enter the main area. I think one would subconsciously "add" space in one's mind because of the acting out of leaving a space, closing it off, and entering a new one.

While there are elements I would adjust, I love the tansu-chest feel and the different levels (for cats it would heaven). It’s bright and the window blockage seems minimal. The storage seems to be a minimalist solution for a secret maximalist. Combining the tv wall bench w a table and an soft ottoman and lots of plants would be my personal adaptations. I like the crispness of the space. It’s like a white shirt. Just needs a few personalized accessories. 🙂

Am I the only one who thinks this is not great? Usually love NTS stuff but this one seems to have taken a fairly decent studio apartment - not the biggest, but not that small either (i've seen much smaller) - and made it more complicated? A simple bed, couple extra closets/cabinets by the side would have ended up doing more? Right now it feels like too much clutter in a small space.

Extremely aesthetic, really thought out to the smallest detail, and with a fun look, but, That's it... it looks so uncomfortable and unfriendly with all these sharp angles, these hard and strict seats, these steps without handrails... Uninhabitable when you have a broken leg or worse. I feel it's cold, geometric, and so bare that it becomes sad, I don't feel the evocation of nature at all. Furthermore, I see an clever intervention of interior fittings and cabinetmaking, not much architecture. To me, it seems more of an intellectual game than a living space, but as long as the inhabitant is happy, it should do the trick

Yes, I concur. The carpentry work appears quite excellent, carving a multiplicity of storage spaces from a small footprint. I can see the "wardrobe" area being quite functional, with a sense of privacy. The whole of it, though, leaves me feeling old. The blandness of the space leaves me feeling repelled instead of welcomed and embraced. It's certainly a young person's space; I can't perceive of a person of any substantial age feeling comfortable in it as a daily living space, and entertaining would prove challenging for me. It's a lovely, abbreviated, Lego-type maze of a living space.

I think there is a fundamental cultural difference in esthetics. What a Westerner may consider as cold and empty is serene and elegant for an Easterner. I like it, I think this is perfect for a young professional. Maybe not so much for an older adult.

Design-wise this idea is so fucking cool. On a practical level though it looks like a nightmare apartment to exist in long-term. If the pandemic has taught me anything it's the importance of separating different aspects of life. Having work, leisure, food, sleep all be in the same place is a sure-fire recipe for stagnation and depression, in my opinion. Not to mention having seen the 'before' photo, this enormous gradient set-up makes the room seem absolutely miniscule by comparison, and it wasn't a big room to begin with!

I'm so torn about this one. On the one hand it's absolutely gorgeous, I love the colour of the wood, all the diagonals and unexpected shapes, and how visually interesting it is. But on the other hand, I really wouldn't want to live in it. Mainly, I think, because my personal preference is for a separate bedroom, and this not only doesn't really separate the sleeping area, but actually (and, it feels to me, inadvertently rather than intentionally) turns the bed into the focus of the entire living space. I do think this sort of design would be absolutely brilliant for an office or creative workplace, though.

The custom furniture doesn’t feel like it belongs in this apartment if I’m honest. The way it covers the windows, doesn’t match the wardrobe or kitchen etc makes it feel like the space is at war with itself, like they had an idea and were set on doing it without really considering the space and limitations already there. Also I agree with others, so many hard surfaces and angles it feels aggressive and bulky for that small space, making it feel even less cosy than I think it would have if you just moved in and bought some standard furniture. I like some of the ideas here but I don’t think they’ve been realised to their potential in this case.

For some reason my favorite part of this is the corner with the sloped cabinet between kitchen and bath. It feels the most streamlined yet aesthetically pleasing and efficient use of that space. I think the big problem in small spaces like this is always storage, so I get why they were trying to find a solution that still allows for a big bed, sofa and TV space without compromising a streamlined feeling, so using as much of the space under the bed as possible makes sense. My only issue is that the room feels very "bottom heavy" for lack of a better term and the wooden pieces against the walls make the space feel a little crowded. Also, I don't believe those steps would make for particularly nice guest seats. They may as well could have added a foldable table for the kitchen bench. But with that slope, half of the bench isn't even usable😬

I feel like this is form over function. There's definitely beauty in this design, but when going in this direction you also end up with a lot of wasted space. I would personally have separated the bed space from the living space, even if it was just with a thin dividing wall. It seems strange to have a couch right next to the bed.

She gets a huge closet on the left, the entry to the bathroom on the left, but he manages to squeeze in the mirror and also conceals the bedroom. She literally can walk into a whole storage "room" under the bed! I might have chosen a lighter wood though.

Interesting aesthetically. Love the angular tv wall. It feels like the table and additional stool overcrowd the place - and I wonder if the apartment would enjoy a greater sense of space without these additions. Currently it feels a bit like you walk around the furniture - rather than being able to walk freely. And I personally would add a few more soft furnishings to bring some texture and warmth to the space.

NTS crew, thank you so much for what you do. We're remodeling an apartment in Italy and I got a lot of ideas on how to use the space wisely from lots of your videos ❤

I like that the designer made sure to incorporate a LOT of storage into the space. It would also be easy to clean/care for. For a single person it is perfect. The patio area is an ideal size for entertaining.

I like the concept of the bedroom as being demarcated, not segregated as what the architect said...

Woah everyone is roasting this design but i truly think this is great. The design works well & its like a piece of art. The design may not fit other people, bit if it solve the problem & fit the client's taste, than thats a good design. I truly appreciate the architect for such a bold move like this.

This is really creative. It's visually interesting and seems quite funcional. I like how the bedroom, sofa, and desk are close together and make the room feel more cozy.

I love how this design makes asymmetry work....But I am skeptical as to how functional the place will be for someone who spends a lot of time home. There is only space just enough to squeeze in the dressing area after the storage door is open. I cannot imagine how you can move, or even bend down after you opened one. Can a person sit in that stool in front of the mirror? That area is also in the shadows. As someone who got a fractured ankle ligament just from losing my footing down two steps...those narrow steps, with no side protection gave be the tingles...imagine getting to bed tipsy or getting off it with a hangover. It's esthetically pleasing, but it falls short in being comfortably or effortlessly functional..... P.S: Those steps would make sense if the aim was to make it easier to discourage being in bed unless for bedtime

Visually it’s beautiful. I’ve loved the previous designs which have sliding rooms which can expand or contract and beds which can become Murphy beds or office space. I think the table in the middle could somehow be pulled out from one of the two build ins from the bed or TV area.

it reminds me of a school’s gym 🏀 with a lot of lockers and bleachers. The kitchen with the glass divider it’s such a great idea because it doesn’t cut the flow

Enjoying the features from Singapore! I love that the architect and homeowner were able to bring such an Avant Garde design even to such a small space. As someone who finds form as equally important as function, this space is inspiring and shows that we don't need to buy a hollywood mansion to incorporate aesthetic dreams.

I love the sculptural look and feel of the design! I imagine that you could easily have friends over and lounge on the bed and couch/daybed. My one tiny criticism would be that I wished the wood chosen matched the pre-existing 'wood' in the apartment. Or go more colourful/artsy and extended this to the existing apartment furnishings. And maybe a slightly bigger tv.

Yes, I thought the place would have looked much better with a different colour. Either match the original or go for a totally different look. All interesting stuff though.

Does anyone love watching these vids like me? It's one of my fav subs and made me realize my "normal" sized 60x30 inches shower was MASSIVE and could be half that instead of lot of wasted space which I won't be standing in! 😁

First time when the before apartment was actually more warm and welcoming than the after. Everything in this apartment makes the apartment less homely… the kitchen, the bathroom and the balcony was perfect as it is. The owner could’ve made a better setup using an IKEA bunk bed with a sofa space underneath and a nice white tv console on the opposite wall. The only good change was the glass separation with the kitchen , that too if the owner cooks. Else not needed.
