NEVER TOO SMALL Sydney Art Studio + Small Apartment - 49sqm/419sqft

NEVER TOO SMALL

Күн бұрын

Unique among 18 other 1960's walk-up apartments, Nicholas Gurney extensively reworked The Warren as a seamless space, drawing the eye deeper into the apartment. Removing the previous partitioning walls allowed all of the 49m2 space's necessities to be framed within a joinery concealed kitchen, and an inventive mirror clad central pod. Creating a calm, airy space; both art studio and home.

🤔 He seemed so testy about that too. Clearly the designer/architect was keenly disappointed that the homeowner did not embrace his preference for less. 👩‍🍳 I am someone who has several hobbies, loves to cook & entertain, and inherited a significant amount of sentimental items. I would not hire someone who has absolutely no fundamental understanding of all that entails. Mastermind some hidden storage or dual functionality. Show me a clever way to rotate seasonal decorations. 🍽 Please don't tell me I should give up any precious kitchen tools. People think epic design is about tossing everything out, and replacing it with something brand new. Don't force wall paper, patterned tile, bold color, open shelving, an over abundance of things that will require special maintenance, too much dark & heavy natural wood. I could go on. I prefer creative folks that can bring freshness while respecting their clients their preferences & their history. 😁 I respect minimalism. I just don't aspire to be one. Doesn't mean that I don't love serenity, order, or organization. ☮🦋💛🌼💛🌼💛🦋☮

While "minimalism" is very trendy right now, i like that the homeowner knew from the start that he has no intention of reducing his collection but instead revealed that he will be adding more to his collection. "There's a place for everything and everything in its place" seems to be the direction of the design for this apartment. Good job homeowner for being true to yourself and good job to the designer for integrating your ideas to meet the homeowner's needs and expectation. Thank you @nevertoosmall for yet another great episode!

Maximalism is taking over now as a trend. But I say to each their own. I personally prefer having less things so minimalism works for me but I get that some people like to collect and keep things that express who they are.Maximalism works great for people with a collection of books/vinyl/figurines etc.

Best episode ever. I could see myself live there! Many of the videos are just minimalist recharge pods. I like to see creative people, plant lovers, someone with 10 surfboards, someone who runs a business from home, someone with 300 boardgames. And families, people with kids. Yes, we live in small spaces too. And apartments which don't have 4,5 m high ceilings. That cheating 😉, it is not small/tiny, it is two apartments on top of each other.

The gold kitchen is probably the only thing I'd change. I like the gold with the pod - but it doesn't seem as functional and needed with the kitchen. Having it completely black might be too dark. But a nice middle wood color, light oak might work. I'd probably change the dining table and seats then too.

Pink What part of America are you talking about? An apartment like that could go for $1500 or more in some parts of America. @Hyperactive Tendencies Unless you have a different personality: most of the great artists, philosophers, designers, innovators didn't require empty clean space - just look up their workshops, offices, art studios. I like polished concrete, wood, steel and glass, I like minimalism as a skeleton of the creation (building's exterior or interior) but I dislike soulless atmosphere. When a designer chooses books by the colour of their cover or arts matching with cushions and curtains that is not minimalism. That is a fashionable and trendy staging for consumers and viewers.

This is a great work! Finally a design that has a life in it. When the minimalism is pushed so far it looks like a hidden path to depression for me. The lack of variety in material, color, texture, combined with the quest of hiding every possible little portion, for the sake of space delimitation, leaves you with a sterile space that for me looks more like the inside of a refrigerator. But i understand why many people like minimalism, it stays a personal preference and it could be a good choice for someone with a more dynamic lifestyle.
@MiddleEarthGirl75
@MiddleEarthGirl75 4 жыл бұрын
I wish people didn't see minimalism as "black or white" in terms of scale. There are different ways to do it and it certainly doesn't have to look sterile or colourless. I'm currently "minimalizing" my home in getting ready to be able to sell it in a few years. I'm looking at things that have gone unused and or/even looked at. Going more lighter and neutral in tones. Asking myself "am I keeping stuff or is stuff keeping me?" By minimlizing, I clearly see what is important and/or useful to me in the life I want to live. You just have to ask yourself why you want to do it, how you want the end result to be and go from there :)

Yes - I missed it the first time. That the curtain can be stored in the pod is genius. Together with the guest bed - that stores below the normal bed, but can be pulled out a great feature. You won't use it everyday - but you can let it stay that way if a guest is visiting for a few days

Amazing job on the renovation, this apartment is definitely a haven for an artist. I myself have the exact same photo of the "woman wearing the hijab smoking" in my living area. My favorite exterior from this whole showcase would be the deep bathtub with a living plant beside it, incredible! That black cat statue on the coffee table looks really beautiful and I just love the bed-on-the-floor concept. All and all, another amazing video NEVER TOO SMALL 💕

Sneakily stunning! I'm an artist at heart but a minimalist in my mind. I didn't expect to like this tour but am pleasantly surprised. I think the completed renovation is a perfect balance between sensuality and serenity.

I have been following the chanel for years and this is my all time favorite Appartement. The design is so clever and the interior desing aestetic is fun and warm. The gold finish of the central unit is probably my favorite element. Despite the many objects the space does not look cluttered. Kuddos to the designer.

I love everything that the mirror gold does for the hallway. It brings so much light into what would normally be a very dark area. The bathroom scheme amplifies the sunny effect as well. The bedroom/bathroom/hallway area has a very chic and Italian feel to it. It’s very romantic. The living room gives off a midcentury vibe that is so inviting that you want to go and spend time there and slow down whereas the studio area has a sleek feel to it, almost like a modern building. I think the storage pod is so well executed. I’m sure there would be an enormous market for it if they mass produced it.

Very clever design and layout -- wow factors were the golden "pod" to house a hidden guest bed and closet/storage area; loved the black sink and how an entire kitchen was "unseen" ( so cool). The shapes and many green plants were aesthetic that blend seamlessly to become part of the art displayed throughout the home. This was a genuis transformation of space customized perfectly for the needs of the owner.

Feels ten times the actual size. Love all the plants and the bathroom was fantastic! To make an extra guest room with privacy is genius. Kudos to designers.
