I think the speaker is using British terms which may confuse some viewers. In the US, we use "gear oil" for our front or rear differentials. When the British say "gear box oil" we say "manual transmission fluid" . Which is similar to gear oil but not the same. Then with 4WD vehicles there is also a transfer case, which normally uses specific "transfer case fluid" depending on make & model. I hope that helps to clear up some of the confusion. So in rear diffs use GL5 oil and in manual transmissions with synchronized gears, use GL4 fluid. Hope that helps.

I had accidentally topped up my car with recommended fluid for 6 speed Manual transmission with marked as GL-4/ GL-5 ( dual) into Rear differential ( without LSD) that probably need GL-5 fluids about 300 ml , so basically now the Diff box has 300ml ( gl-4/gl-5) and 800 ml OE ( differential OE fluid) What do you think will happen to the DIFF ? Thanks
@LA_Commander5 ай бұрын
@@HellaMeiste It sounds like it should not be a problem at all. I would not be concerned about it. Is there a reason why your diff was low on fluid? Why didn't you just drain all the fluid and refill with fresh fluid? If you don't mind my asking.
@HellaMeiste5 ай бұрын
@@LA_Commander Oh thank you, it’s not any leaking cause etc but it was my bad when i loosen the filler plug for checking the car was not in level position away too low so spilled out and i just had fluid for Manual Gl-4/GL-5 left in bottle around 400ml Btw thank you If this is not going too bad for the diff

I have an 02' Blazer ZR2 with the 8.5" 10 bolt & G80 locker. I've read that no additive is to be added to a rear-end with the G80 locker & calls for 85-90 gear oil.
@LA_Commander10 ай бұрын
If you have a locker then you don't have a limited slip unit, so no limited slip additive is required

im going round in circles can someone tell me what fluid i should use for my 1980s bmw differential oil. Owners manual asks for SAE-90 Mineral based oil.

What is he referring to when he says gear box? Is he talking about the transfer case? Or a manual transmission?
@LA_Commander10 ай бұрын
The British say "gear box" while we Americans say "manual transmission". This man sounds African and they use the British style English.

You're right and wrong at the same time, there are vehicles that only require SAE 90 viscosity as long as it's GL-5.

What, gearbox in cars with front engine and FWD have differential in gearbox...
@LA_Commander10 ай бұрын
Front wheel drive cars have a transaxle. So it's the transmission and differential combined. Use the specific fluid stated in your owner's manual for that.
