Yes I have subscribed I saw straight away that you and I think the same way I started having golf in 2005. Fi The first pro I had a few lessons with wasn't really interested so I moved on and tried another and it was the thing and on it went until I finally got so fed up that I stopped playing outright then my buddy got me interested again. I found that the information that they gave me was very vague I never really understood how the club really works

I'm just coming back to the game after 17+ year hiatus. Practiced now for two months. Trending 4.4 handicap. BUT I absolutely cannot figure out a backswing. Do a lot of work with wedges, and cannot for the life of me consistently hit the ball in the same direction. Straight, then push, then fade, then draw, then hook. Natural shot is draw - which I do NOT like. Want a power fade. Can you help me with virtual lessons?

One of the best lessons I’ve seen on correct takeaway and wrist hinging. Unlike many instructors, Alex keeps the golf swing simple, which is the best way to learn it. Too much analysis confuses and over-complicates the golf swing for most amateurs.

In a world full of anxiety and stress, it's imperative for us golfers to leave all that behind as much as possible when we get to the course and when we practice. Practice, drills and calmness of the mind are the keys to a great round, and your style of simplicity, flow, momentum and feel, are perfect in this over anxious, "overly conscious" game of golf.

I've been working on this, vaguely, knowing my practice swing leads to an easy hinge of the wrists while my real swing, likely affected by tension, never ends up with a proper hinge. When you mentioned pointing the shaft down, I immediately realized that was the difference between my practice and actual swings. Brilliant observation, thanks for the video. Cheers mate!

In 20+ years of playing golf I have never managed to understand wrist hinge in relation to the takeaway…… but this video has finally made it click! It has now led me to understand how to use the ground to push off and ‘swing’ with momentum rather than ‘hit’. The difference in power and accuracy is incredible- I’m honestly 2 clubs longer and without the low pull hook of death. Thanks so much Alex- this has genuinely made golf so much more enjoyable for me. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

Fantastic video! I´ve spent hundreds of hours trying different kind of takeaways, because it feels like this part of the swing have been the nemesis of my swing. Last fall I tried to set the club earlier with a lot of right hand extencion, but this led to a series of (different) problems. Since january I´ve depended much more on left hand extencion and radial deviation, and this feels a lot more natural. Pushing the but end down with the left hand gives natural hinging and flow in the backswing, and it also adds to the dynamics by enhancing upper body rotation (or this is what it does for me). Thanks!

By far the best tip I’ve heard in a long time. Like so many others mention, this will help you take out any other swing thoughts during the backswing and also during the downswing. After implying this I’m hitting both my irons and woods 20-30 yards longer and way more consistently. The fats and thins are also gone. So thank you a bunch!!

Doing this just feels natural and I’m shallowing the club on the downswing just naturally. I'm just learning and everything you said resonates. I've tried millions of just do this and at the time it was meaningless because I wasn't at that stage of learning. As I mature in golf I figure I need feels and the swing is just finding the natural geometry of body to swing the club unimpeded. You shouldn't need a millions swing thoughts if you have the right idea swinging. This is currently where I am, using gravity forces to fling the club per say. My last epiphany is about lag, it's simple. If you move your body in front of the ball during the backswing you will hit down on the ball and get lag. It made me understand why lag is good also. You always hit ball then turf, with the secondary thing being you deloft the club. Both lead to distance and consistency. The pros are all in the same moved over lagged position at impact not because they are trying to make lag and hold the wrists etc. They don't think about lag they just end up with it.

Liked the video! I’m a 68 year old 8 handicap and I have struggled for years with the correct hinge cock. You say that when taking the left arm back in the backswing that it will rotate. For me I have never felt that I get that rotation. I watch other golfers and it’s clear their left arm and wrist rotate on the backswing while I feel the club head is going back closed. I have been to LOADS of different pros for lessons and each one of them insist this rotation happens naturally but as you know golf is a game of FEEL and I don’t FEEL the left arm rotation which means I’m constantly manipulating the club face. I hit my driver and fairway woods really well but my irons are poor both in distance and flight.

@@TheArtofSimpleGolf Thanks Checked out the “Don’t turn your shoulders” video. When I do what the video advises my arm does appear to rotate. The problem I have is not keeping the arms relaxed. If I try to use this method I feel the left arm breaks down so to prevent that I tend to get very tight which in turn stops the rotation. It’s probably all a mental problem rather than mechanical. Thanks anyway. The videos were very good, I just wish I could implement them better 🙂

i agree with what you say with specific reference to pointing the butt of the grip down in the drill you demonstrate. but, at 4.00 your forearm is not actually rotating- which is good- your left shoulder joint is actually rotating in its socket- which is good. if you return the club to the ball you will find that the clubface will be square. but, if you actively rotate your left forearm, in the takeaway, you will find that the club won't be square when you return it to the ball. but, this is a great lesson. and, you demonstrate the perfect hand and arm movement when you hit the ball. and, it is worth noting, that though your left arm and club are not all in one line at address- which is totally correct- your club and left arm are all in one line when the club reaches your right foot in the takeaway. and, this shows that you are establishing the kind of heel pad control that you demonstrate in the drill. the waggle is key. when we waggle the club back we press the heel pad of the left hand to the left- pulling the left side of the right forearm to the left, also- and we return the club to the ball by pressing in with the joint of the left wrist. the heel pad resists against the wrist joint, as it returns the club to the ball. the digiti minimi and the flexor retinaclum work as antagonistic opposites. when the the heel pad and the wrist joint react against one another, in the waggle, they become active. and, when the wrist joint is active the heel pad can only press slightly to the left in the takeaway, and it does not pull on the left side of the right forearm as much as it does in the waggle. the left wrist joint pushes back, in the takeaway, pushing the lower part of the right arm back. this folds the right arm. heel pad control, with the left hand, in the takeaway, sets the club on its arc. the arc ensures that the heel pad will be pressing directly down on the club when it is parallel to the target line. increased pressure with the heel pad at this point, cocks the wrists and continues the club on its arc. as a drill, just simply swing to parallel to the target line, with just your left hand on the club, and wait a while. you will feel the pressure build up in the heel pad of your hand. this will set the club back in motion, as it continues on its arc.

Yes you are technically right! However, most, if they TRY and do a lot of that they are toast ;) This is simple golf and helping folks find feels and thoughts as well as approx checkpoints to build a foundation… to get away from confusion. @DASH1ful2 жыл бұрын
@@TheArtofSimpleGolf well, i appreciate the fact that my comments were very complexed and technical; but, swing wise i did not advocate any particular technique; certainly not one contrary to your technique. for me it is very reassuring that the waggle can build the correct hand action into swing. and, it is fair to say that the waggle is as important as the pioneers of the game tell us- from hogan to seve. the demonstration that seve gives on the waggle and creating the right angle, in the backswing, in his short video, is one of the best lessons in golf. but, what you are teaching, here, is along the same lines as what seve tells us in is video.

What people really need to realize is that your club face position at setup....is not necessarily your club face position at impact. At impact, your hips are turned, and your wrist hinge is likely slightly different than your wrist hinge at setup. That is the biggest factor I've encountered, and especially if someone is experiencing a pretty constant pull or strong draw in their iron shots. It requires either setting the wrist hinge differently at setup....or adjusting the club face at setup...to reflect getting a perpendicular face at impact. This issue gets little mention from golf instructors.
@davidgordon7732 жыл бұрын
The mistakes highlighted here are all committed by myself and have lead to many years of golfing frustration. I’ll certainly be giving this a try. My wrists and arms are tensed so tightly in a subconscious attempt to control the club that I doubt I’ll ever change but I will hope to give it a go. Thank you and keep up the good work. David G.

Thanks for saying it's OK to hinge the wrists via extension. I ended up doing it this way as having played cricket it felt much more natural, but literally all other videos only speak of cocking the wrists. My strike improved no end even if it means having a shut face at the top of the swing Hinging via cocking the wrists and rotating the body just felt very alien and my timing on release was really hard.

There is a very good drill for this done with a kitchen broom I first saw mentioned in the Hank Johnson book “Winning The Three Games of Golf: The Swing, The Shot, The Score. You choke up on the handle of the broom with the hands with the butt end of it sticking up in the belly which literally forces the golfer to move hips, shoulders and hands in a connected ‘one piece’ sweeping outside the hands takeaway as Hogan did. You want to use a broom for this rather than club or pole because the length of the broom and the weight of the head exaggerate the swing force to the point it is impossible to control the path of the broom head with the hands, which is the underlying lesson here. What happens in the backswing when the hips turn to 45° and meet the resistance of the squared back foot is that the butt end of the broom will pop out of the belly and the CLUB FORCE will compel the wrists to hinge as the shaft of the broom reaches horizontal stopping the head of the broom from traveling backwards. A basic rule of physics is one of equal and opposite reaction and when the hips, shoulders and hands are stopped from moving back the kinetic energy generated by the wide sweep back outside the hands pulls the lead arm so forcefully it can’t bend at the elbow which is why it hinges at the wrists and whips up and back around the hands pulling the lead arm in tight across the chest (loading it to release explosively in the downswing) and pulling the shoulders which in the Hogan style swing had been turning in sync with hips another 45° closed to the the top of the backswing where they wind up at 90° to the swing line with the club shaft parallel with the swing line and CLUB HEAD MASS IDEALLY POSITIONED OVER THE GOLFER’S CENTERS OF BALANCE AND ROTATION TO ALLOW IT TO BE PULLED BACK DOWN ON A BALANCED PATH, i.e., one that will not pull the golfer off balance. The beauty of the Hogan era ‘one piece’ takeaway is that if you get the first 18” of the takeaway correct, keeping the face of the club “looking’ back at the ball, the rest of the swing backswing to the top, including the wrist cock, happen automatically because it is the momentum acting on the mass in club head, steers it up on plane by the way the mass in the toe of the club connects to the shaft and arm at the heel of the club. In the broom drill when the butt end pops out of the belly and the wrists cock and the force pulls arm and shoulders up you will observe that the shaft and butt end of the broom sticking a foot or so past the hands winds up pointing back at the ball. In the downswing the same thing happens because the length and weight of the broom force the person swinging it to retain the cocking in the wrists. But at the point in the downswing the broom handle comes back horizontal with the ground the force spins the broom around the hands and the butt end sticking out past the hands RECONNECTS WITH THE BELLY and stays connected there through impact and the start of the finish UNTIL THE FORCE PULLS THE TRAILING ARM STRAIGHT (the mirror image of the takeaway extension) and the force once again causes the wrists to automatically turn over and cock. What you will observe if doing that exercise with the broom is that when the butt end pops out it and the shaft wind up automatically pointing to the spot on the ground were the ball was. When swinging the same way with a regular club the butt end points at the center of the body when the hips are in front of the pelvis and at the ball position in the downswing just before the wrists uncock and again in the finish after the extension of the club and trail arm when the force, not any conscious action by the golfer again cock the wrists. Why don’t more golfers today swing like that? In the 1960s after the huge success of Jack Nicklaus conventional wisdom for how a swing should work changed from using a takeaway move where hips/shoulders/hands all moved in sync during the takeaway to a sequence in which the shoulders and hands move first and hips after which is much more difficult to coordinate and why most beginners today who do that wind up swinging the club too low and inside in their takeaway, allowing the club force to bend the elbows which then compels them to consciously cock the wrists with the muscles in their forearms which tighten their grip on the club so much it can’t freely hinge up and down in the radial-to-ulnar deviation ‘waggle’ action which generates most of the acceleration and power in the club head in the last 90° of rotation of the club head down the the ball.

You pinpointed my problem - focusing more in technique than feeling. I'm a range pro, but sadly not on the course. Will take your advice to the studio next week. Been trying I'm my backyard today, but apparently without balls 😁

Hope this helps but remember to practice with different targets and shots. Rehearse not just practice. Also see some of the video we have in on course like aiming and what to do before a shot

I had previously gotten the tip to push down with the left arm going back. However, pushing down with the left hand to lower the end of the grip is a great visual. Also, the reminder to try to be smooth and natural rather than too mechanical resonates with an 'overthinker' like me. Thanks for the tip.

0:05 I have spent 40 years dragging the club back with my hands so my swing is doomed from the start. I've tried everything is there anybody out there can tell me why?!

The tip was very good! Thank you. Almost more impressive was the freedom in your wrist movement when you swung the club back and forth in a little half swing. That look was almost like a well oiled hinge and does not resemble my wrist movement, which I hinder for some reason. I shall practice this style. Thanks again!

What I really value in this vid was the mental aspect from the points made early, regarding natural, flowing for repeatable consistency…my brain is my Achilles!! Does this apply to driver or is this more for irons?
@TheArtofSimpleGolf8 ай бұрын
It can apply too! Thanks for the kind words and it’s the goal. Keep at it.

The mechanics of a golf swing are very similar to banging a nail into a piece of wood. The forearm and wrist move away as one without bending the wrist. The return motion of the forearm the wrist bends to allow the mass of the hammer head to be accelated towards the nail head during this downward motion.
@TheArtofSimpleGolf2 жыл бұрын
Yep and even have lessons that wield a hammer :)

Its frosty outside here in Glasgow, currently patching my tax returns to head to the range 🤣 Been working on the wrist set and correct swing plane recently. 3 hours a few days ago and finally slotted into everything you explained there. The avid test is creaming 4 iron after 4 iron, shaping them, up and down height....couldn't believe how easy it was to hit great shots Then, played 9 holes the day after and just wasnt doing the same as I was on the range, (although I was only + 2 for 9 so still hitting the ball decent tbf) I think I'd gone back to over thinking the wrist break and over emphasising it! Hey ho, I'm off to the range again Great lesson btw, crucial for a repetitive swing, especially the bit about 'dont come inside too soon' that's 1 thing I remember from my good day, nice wide takeaway Appreciated 😍🏌️♀️🏴

I'm going back to this video on wrist hinge for "my" golf swing, Alex. I tried to do the "Nick Faldo Pre-Set Drill", but I couldn't repeat it consistently when I used it during actual play.
@TheArtofSimpleGolf2 жыл бұрын
I used that pre set drill for months when I started to take golf as my career… ruined me. I could not use it in play and I was lost with takeaway for many years. It’s great to feel something but can’t use it much
