If you do ever see a bear stand up looking at you in the wild. DO NOT RUN AWAY! a bear can easily out pace you, and they can cause a significant amount of damage without much effort. Avoid eye contact, make yourself as small as possible, and slowly back away without turning around. If you don't have a weapon or bear mace this is your best chance at survival. The bear stood up to show you that you're on its turf and you aren't welcome. You aren't prey at this point, just a potential threat. This is your chance to diffuse the situation and leave.

There have been a few notable attacks that end up lethal unfortunately where brown bears are seen bouncing up and down on tents with a person inside then dragging them away. The bear here seemed to want to eat the melon. He wasn’t playing with it. Much like that bear famously witnessed in the night of the grizzlies attack was seen bouncing like this on a female camper where she was dragged off and killed within ear shot of friends hiding in hill/trees after scurrying to safety. I’m not the bear here and I wasn’t there.. but that’s not playing. That’s an intentional act to break open a large melon with ease. They aren’t being goofy. . I’m sure bears are playful like big cats too where they could accidentally harm a human playing around but it’s still important to recognize when a bear isn’t playing. I take it that’s the message here as well. It’s very wise to not engage with brown bears like that. Not only are they stronger but their blending of play and possible escalation comes much quicker and likely with fewer signs you’ll have time to decipher and react appropriately. They aren’t just big, gentle powerful animals. They are powerful predators who can exist safely around smaller things that aren’t immediate prey if cared for responsibly which I assume they are here. But they are still dangerous. I’m not demonizing the bear but the behavior cited here is similar to what has been observed during atleast 3 Lethal brown bear attacks that I’m aware of.
