I named my son 'Bastian after this character - a young boy who read books, had an imagination and chased his dreams.... I love this scene and how the old man piques 'Bastian's curiosity. This world needs more dreamers.

Bastian reminds me a lot of myself as a kid- an avid reader who had been picked on sometimes but was imaginative and had a courage I didn't even know I had. We all have been on the same journey as Bas and still go on new ones when we read something new and are transported to places and times beyond our ordinary lives, viewpoints and worlds.

I love books, especially fiction. They take away all the suffering and pain in life and take you to a whole other world. Fantasy for example is the definition for it. Authors like Tolkien, Lewis, Martin, Rowling, all changed my life

Saberian Dream I agree. I only read and reread The Sorceror’s Stone-The Prisoner of Azkaban. No disrespect to Rowling of course, I just think that HP lost its purpose from Goblet of Fire onward.

This scene is awesome...it just popped in my head at random. 'CAPtain NEmo!' :) "Your books...are safe." I want an 'unsafe' book. I wonder what kind of puissance it took to write the book these two avid readers come into contact with. I suddenly want a backstory; How did the bookstore owner come across it? Did a passerby happen to just sell it at random after finding it in their basement? Did the museum procure something & loan it to the only man, a bookstore owner, that could give them answers about it? Or did the man travel abroad and find, or stumble upon it there? ...or did it find him? Crap...now I gotta go read the book about the book.

IMO the book store owner should have lied and told Bastian that the book was ordinary, nothing special or a run of the mill history book. As soon as you say that the book is "special" "not safe" and "not for you", of course that is going to pique the kid's curiosity and he'll want to read it. Humans especially kids are naturally drawn to the taboo. Then again, if he did, there would be no book/movie.

I don’t know if we’re meant to be altogether sure he didn’t mean for all of this to happen.
@stevenmioduszewski63972 жыл бұрын
I'll be honest, this is just a viewer's perspective - I think he said all of that purposefully to get Bastian to take the book. He was using reverse psychology to get him interested in reading this journey knowing he wasn't a run of the mill kid with a short attention span. I only say that, because he leaves the book for Bastian right there, and smiles when Bastian runs out with the book. I could be wrong, but that's my theory on it.
@86blackberrywhite2 жыл бұрын
@@stevenmioduszewski6397 you might possibly be correct in your theory but if you watch the full scene carefully, you'll notice his smile comes right BEFORE he looks down and realizes the book is no longer there. So I'm thinking he was simply happy that Bastian finally left his store, not because he took the book. Like you said though, it's all a matter of the viewer's perspective.

So if that book wasn’t safe, why was that old man reading it?
@afriendofbean3 жыл бұрын
@Joe Whitehead I wondered that too where I'm guessing that Mr. Coreander must have seen it on his desk (it must have appeared magically since it's a bookstore) and said something like "where did this book come from, I never ordered it" and then decided to read it not having it on sale. But then found out that it was a magical book causing himself to become a character in the book following "The Nothing", following Attreyu on his quest, and being the one responsible to give the Childlike Empress a new name and he felt that now that he started reading it he had to finish what he started to bring things back to normal which is why he was telling Bastian that, that book is not safe to read. Then when he told Bastian that the book is not for him from 3:02-3:05 was like he was saying "this book is not for sale" and/or "this book is not safe to read." Then (not shown here) when Bastian took the book away, Mr. Coreander smiled feeling that he (Mr. Coreander) was now exempted as the chosen one and Bastian became the replacement.
