I love this clip for two big reasons: It shows us just how well all these different components (drums, bass, guitars, vocals) mix so well together to create the final, magical song, and Krist explaining the mindset behind the band (or at least Kurt) in channeling their influences of both punk and pop by creating songs that were catchy and got people listening, but still had the heaviness driving them. And of course, it's also cool to watch Butch show us the recording magic and why he did what he did.

kkwillsaveus --- in bloom is about the emerging state of nirvana and how they were starting to attract people to the show who inside kurt detested. that is, the very people that used to beat cobain up were all of a sudden showing up at their shows. the song is a song of irony and sarcasm he's literally making fun of some of his listeners (unbeknownst to them). his opinions of axl rose were separate and yet related at the same time.

Dave Grohl was clearly the magic ingredient here. Yeah they could have released this album with Chad Channing and it would probably have been a cult classic, but Dave Grohl elevated the band and made them a phenomenon. Not downplaying Kurt’s songwriting or Butch’s production, just saying Dave really rounded the band out. Kurt really lucked out when he poached Dave from Scream. Always loved his harmonies in the chorus too. If you listen to the version of In Bloom with Chad playing drums and no backing vocals, you can really hear that something important is missing.

They called it "pop songs" but I've never hear a "pop comercial song" like this. even with clean guitars doesn't sounds like a happy chatchy tune... All nevermind sounds so strong and powerfull... you could say that of Bon Jovi... which uses lots of distortion guitars, but at the end of the day, it's a nice & sweet ballad... like "Carry" or something... Nirvana sounds like power rock all the time... no matter if has distortion or not (like come as you are for example; it sounds powerfull without distortion)
@andrepereira7444 жыл бұрын
Don't want to sound rude but you are wrong about what is or what can be considered Pop music. Pop music dosen't mean that got to be something like Katy Perry or Rhianna or even other thing that play now on radio,that sounds like others 100 musics made before. That is one of the beautiful things about Nevermind,the originality of the songs. Also dosen't mean that got to be happy catchy tune,although that "in Bloom" is very upbeat music wise (imo) and definitely catchy like everything on Nevermind (the amount of records sold worldwide speak for itself). Butch,is talking about the melody (in the music and voice),song writing,music structure,great compelling singing and definitely catchiness,that gave"In Bloom" and almost everything in Nevermind a big pop sensibility underneath all that distortion. Just compare with Bleach or In Utero and you will understand what i'm saying.
@DiazdelVivar4 жыл бұрын
@@andrepereira744 also Led Zeppelin sold idk how many millions of records and I wouldn't say their songs are "catchy tunes" in bloom is more dark than happy... but dark music (or whatever it is, but not happy) can be famous and successfull too... if it's good music. I wouldn't describe Pink Floyd as catchy also... or Bethoven's moonlight sonata... walking on sunshine, that's a catchy song (i don't like it very much) Nevermind is more clever than Bleach... Polly and About a girl, could be Nevermind songs... I guess there's no a clear line that that says if a song is "comercial" or "catchy"
@andrepereira7444 жыл бұрын
DiazdelVivar That's what i meant,pop music dosen't need to be something silly,happy and hollow. I respect your opinion,but Led Zeppelin sure got some catchy tunes,imo. I doubt they would have sold millions of records had it not been so. Not everyone is an"expert in music",or even,knows to play an instrument,to really know and appreciate the work behind those instruments being played. Most people just like (or not) the songs. The same goes to Pink Floyd. Most Nirvana's music are 3,4 minutes songs with just 2 diferent parts. That by itself is also a mark from the pop world. They are easy to the ear because of that and because of their "catchyness". Again, I doubt Nevermind would have sold millions of records had it not been so. They even labeled their sound like "The Beatles meet Black Sabbath",because they ( or Kurt) knew that underneath all that distortion there was lots and lots of melody,especialy on Nevermind. And having melody on songs is always more appealing and easy to digest to most of the listeners. There's still melody on Bleach (and in In Utero,btw),but overall,the sound is more"dirty",with that metalish approach (except for About a girl,like you mentioned,and well)and not so catchy for the ear,for most listeners. I just don't consider catchy as the same thing as comercial. But its all good.
@DiazdelVivar4 жыл бұрын
@@andrepereira744 I understand what you say... and of course Nirvana is full of melodys, just like Led Zepp and Pink Floyd... but I wouldn't describe Stairway to Heaven as a "catchy tune" it's a great song and ppl doesn't need to know why they like it... they just press play and they like what they hear, which is the whole song, with everything... they like that "eveything" even if they're not aware of what they like... it's everything, including the voice... and the voice is the only thing they can sing so maybe they think they like it because of the voice melody, but it's not true. they like the whole song and they don't know why. Come as you are for example, there's a clear riff... that riff is a melody, a powerfull melody, then Kurt starts singing and they're hearing 2 melodys... and the drums gives the rythm, the beat...etc etc... that's why many ppl, start mimic the drums when they hear that song for example... or they start dancing... since they don't know why they like it, they can not say "I like it because of the voice melody" cause if you isolate the voice, would sound very empty, and they wouldn't like it. there're many examples of great songs where the voice melody is pretty flat (idk the exact word) it doesn't moves much... almost the same note, but it's perfect for that song. (like Lucy in the sky with diamonds) Reality is that the voice is just another part of the song, and it's not the most important part. the term "catchy" is... well is not clear. but I wouldn't say "Another brick in the wall" is a catchy tune!! _we don't need no education_ 👈 is that a catchy tune?? anyway, many ppl like that song, and it's not because that melody; it's the whole song... a good melody is a good melody and it doesn't have to be catchy" but sure, ppl like a good melody, but most times, they like the song, music. a song is music. just sing the 1st verse of 'another brick in the wall' *acapella* do you know the words?? just do it once, please, you'll understand what I mean. we don't need no education we don't need no thoughts control no dark sarcasm in the classroom teacher leave the kids alone
