This movie length multi-episode Australian focus was brilliant!! I loved all the renovations, their individual style and multiple methods for maximising storage and space. I also “wowed!” when I saw the innovative expanding shower. Such a simple but effective design. Congratulations to all the designers and home owners. Applause to NTS production crew for very professional episodes 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

Despite seeing all these apartments before in earlier episodes, I found this compilation insightful. I've been fascinated by smaller spaces for over 20 years. I admire how they challenge us to think of what is truly important for daily living and encourage a more sustainable approach to development. As I watched this video I was struck by what was present in each apartment, as opposed to what wasn't: light, air flow, open space, long sight lines, flexibility, calmness and peacefulness (within an urban environment). Previous generations have been encouraged to consider the accumulation of things as a mark of adulthood, yet the consumerism this encourages comes with its own stressors and problems. The designs here showcase how a more sustainable approach to housing development and daily living can create environments that nurture and restore while offering financial accessibility and the freedom that less consumerism and debt provide. Thanks for this!

Oh em Gee. I never thought an entire home could fit into 24m2. My bedroom alone, not counting the bathroom attached, is 1m2 bigger. I have just finished a renovation where a converted the lounge into another bedroom, and took in the porch to make a bathroom and kitchen, that new area, small as it is, is 70m2. Its amazing how talented these architects are to make usable functional space in such a small area.

Lovely to revisit these: most already saved on my "inspiration" playlist for the (likely imaginary) day when I am able to own and renovate. The Cairo apartments are particular favourites, as I once lived at the top of that central staircase and grew up around the corner from the family of the architect, Best Overend. Even unrenovated, the design was so liveable, with space to bathe and dress and walls that swept seamlessly in a curve into high ceilings. The back wall of steel-framed windows with a door onto the balcony meant there was always natural light and air circulating. When they were built (for use by barristers in Melbourne's courts, I believe) there was a service kitchen and laundry downstairs, and meals and laundry could be delivered via a small service hatch from the walkways into each small kitchen. My hatch was repurposed as a door for my cat.

I badly want something like this. My main requirements would be offstreet parking for one vehicle and very good sound protection from neighbouring apartments. Currently living in a townhouse, the wall is far too thin and it's affecting my mental health so much that I find reasons to not be at home as much as possible.

Unfortunately most of these apartments are vacation stay units not homes. I wonder if they actually work as homes??

Only one mentioned short term rentals, from memory. Most were made for the client to live in or for the architect themselves to live in.

So there is no way to get to the bathroom \ toilet without moving the hole sliding door? or even drink a glass of water in the middle of the night?? i guess this over design won the functionality in this project. (in the first video)

the bathroom door is accessible when the screen / sliding door is on either end. It blocks the kitchen or the bed, but as long as it is all the way to one side or another, the bathroom door isn't covered.

Great episode consolidation for other viewers, though I’ve got them saved in a folder for easy access as I love studio apt design. Ive renovated a few in melbourne myself, purchasing my smallest one yet to renovate next year (16SQM). Although I’m decent at redesigning, I admit I’ve gleaned great inspo from these episodes, like deepening set length kitchen benches to give more work area! A concept so obvious & simple it may not have occurred to me! Forest for the trees. LOL. Keep up the good work!

What I really don’t understand is that in those “minimalist” spaces I see the washer/dryer or dish washer with all the garish stickers left on. Possibly even visible through perforated screens. Makes me wonder what minimalist really means…

Interesting that these architects' interesting and imaginative tastes are not reflected in the clothes they chose to wear. 😢

@lovingmayberry3075 күн бұрын
@@itssamber01 The opposite, imo. The fact that their clothes choices were so odd, did in fact, take attention away from the homes.
@BurakKarabulut5 күн бұрын
I think clothes are the enemy of tiny spaces. If you live in a tiny space or you decorate small spaces, you kinda end up being a minimalist and that means, you can live with 50 pieces which are usually very dull and boring. Clothes are for maximalist people and I’m one of them. There was a series of pictures showcasing people living in tiny spaces from japan and it was called “The victims of Fashion” like they ended up buying so many clothes that they were sitting in a very tiny room filled up with clothes.

Taubmans have wonderful paint colours for 2024, deep and rich. IKEA has red poang low back chairs….and art deco type lamps. Just done cop the hideous death colours everywhere, no life no love. Use lights, ikea, some plants. All these are in buildings of architectural merit, beautiful solid wall and floors wonderfully big windows. This allows a great start and light neutral paint colour.
