Part 2 of the Nevius Street Dam removal on the main stem of the Raritan River in central New Jersey, which was completed between July 24-31, 2013. This project was the third of three planned dam removals (the others were the Calco Dam and the Robert Street Dam - see those videos on KZbin also) that re-opened nine miles of historically significant spawning grounds for American shad and other migratory fish on the Raritan River and the lower 1.5 miles of the Millstone River (in addition to numerous tributaries). This fish passage restoration initiative was managed by John W. Jengo of MWH on behalf of the Kinder Morgan, Inc., who is funding the project.

Thanks for your response and also for the work you've done to help our river! One last comment, I noticed that the fish ladder door looked to be closed during some high water this past spring. I think that is a huge mistake since this is time the Striped Bass swim their way up river, during these high water events.

I was at the Head Gates dam yesterday. The river was a few inches higher then normal. I wish you could have seen all the fish and eels trying to swim up the dam. What a show!

The Rutgers University study of the Island Farm Weir fish passage efficiency from 2012-2013 has not yet been completed. We do know that there will be varying percentages of passage depending on species (for example, other similar fish ladders have had 1%-3% of shad passing a ladder, but there can be higher percentages of other species making it through). Striped bass have made it through this ladder, but we don't know yet what percentage of fish making the attempt actually succeeded. Thanks.

The maintenance of this ladder appears to be a major issue and I've often seen (as you have undoubtedly also) crews clearing out debris to keep debris from clogging the outlet (or closing the door, as you have noted). It's my sense that this ladder in now firmly "on the radar" of NJDEP and NOAA and will rank closely to the remaining dam removals as a major objective of "Phase II" (my projects on Calco, Robert St, and Nevius St having comprised Phase I). Clearly, we're not done yet! Thanks.

I went back again today. What I thought were eels were all lampreys. They are suckering to the side walls and trying to get up the dam. Lol. Nasty looking things!

Yes, they are not nature's most attractive creatures, but a very natural part of this river and a good sign of the significant improvement in water quality. And as you noted, they have no difficulty migrating upstream in the presence of the dams, although all the fish do, which is why we are striving to remove these impediments. Thanks.

Great job!! the river is flowing very nice through Duke Island park. Do you feel the fish ladder off of Weston Canal Road is blocking a high percentage of anadromous fish? I've have yet to hear of any Striped Bass caught above that dam besides one which was only about 8 inches in length.
