I have the same reel spooled with Suffix ProMix 12 lb test. I went out yesterday and used a Ribbet Frog and got 0 hits. Switched to a Rat-L-Trap and caught 5 small Bass in 2 hours. I've used this reel on about six trips now and the gears are getting a little crunchy. Love your channel BTW.

I'm glad to see other people are having the same frustrations that I have fishing frogs. I have three ponds on my routine that I hit when I go fishing and Everyone is always launching these monster frogs. I also I'm glad to see someone other than myself likes cheap baitcasters. I currently Rock and old Shakespeare Contender 110, a Shakespeare Synergy baitcaster, a new Shakespeare Alpha Baitcaster and Abu Garcia Black Max. Great video and find. Today I bought 2 of those Zebco, Protégé combos @ Ollies for $26.99 each. The rods are PRC661M (6ft 6in, Medium Power, Medium Action, 1pc, Line Weight 8-17 lbs.) The reals are PR100S (Lightweight graphite frame, 3 Bearings (2 + Clutch), Continuous Anti-Reverse clutch, Right Hand Retrieve, Disc Drag System, Aluminum Spool, Magnetic Cast Control, Line Weight up to 30 lbs.). I am putting 150 yards of 15 lb. Spiderwire EZ Braid on each of them. I have decided to replace my 2, 50+ year old South Bend Tackle baitcasting combos, with these 2 new Zebco, Protégé combos.

Great video. I love your KZbin videos. Talk about using old equipment. I'm still using a Fenwick Goldwing and a Shimano Bantam 100 that I purchased 40 years ago. Switched the reel over to a 7 foot rod. It's still my favorite reel for a Texas rigged worm. It's a small reel with nothing fancy on it. The rod has an inexpensive Shimano on it, now. It is a stiff six-footer that I use for heavy lures like one of the biggest broken back jitterbugs available for topwater fishing early mornings and late evenings. Haven't done anything special to keep the rod in good shape but it is. Just clean and lubricate the reel every spring.

Nope. You will get tangles and snarls and waste and cut off lots line. Use the cheap stuff until you know what you are doing. $1.79 12 lb test mono.

Great videos! Do you fish the same lake all the time?

Usually. It's 22,000 acres.

amen, not everyone can afford expensive stuff and these works too. some may not last as long but i think r plenty of out there that would last at least few season if properly maintained and at an affordable price. try dunking it in water one time and dry to see if the performance suffers. accident happens but some of my more expensive stuff they can survive a few dunk before i need to crack it open for some relubing lol

Ha, not dunking it just to see if it breaks. That defeats the whole premise 😂

Based on your statement, i am making the assumption that you will try to use this reel as long as possible with "no hiccups" and see how well it performs? So i am a kayak fisherman, sometimes i dunk my reel by accident or what if a kayak flips over etc? So i was just curious how would it with stand a dunk, love to see a simulation, but if you don't intend on doing one, it's all good ^_^

Nope. You are asking me to create a situation I won't be in for your gain. Unreasonable... 🤔

And making assumptions is not a wise thing to do anyway 😉

That's a good reel for someone just starting to use baitcasters, once they master it, then they can always upgrade as they need more performance from the reel, after all, you don't give someone just learning to drive a high powered fast car, that's a recipe for disaster.

Yep, master the fishing first. Then upgrade the gear. 👍

You have the most beastly hookset I've ever seen. I'm surprised the fish still had lips bro!
